I concur, never understood that either.

It has to be with those hard core apple fans.

Its like, how will we view old flims from 50, 60 years ago if everything went on line? What about those older people who dont want to do itunes, but rahter stick with physical media

Blu-ray belongs anywhere where the cousmer wants it. If someone wants to watch a HD movie while they are 10000 miles away from home, let them. Apple TV isnt much help, and that doesnt deserve to be in any living room, as it doesnt support true 1080p, nor does it have any DVR features.

But Apple doesn't have to stretch its product line or options to accommodate it.
That's a marketing decision, that I agree with but you don't.
We'll see who's right.

As for seeing the difference between 1080p and 720p on a 17" display, I'll not assault your perception, but simply note that all of the empirical data I've seen (do a search on AVSforum) says that the difference is not discernible by the human eye. More likely to be dissonance reduction, justifying the extra $$ paid for the higher cost monitor.
The fact is that under 42" at > 10' (and similar ratios) makes the difference between the 2 inconsequential.
But if spending the extra $$ rocks your boat, then by all means, keep the economy going. :)

How do you remember this?

My MB is 16 months old and the battery just died abruptly with ~460 cycles... my MBP is 18 months old and it's battery has ~360 cycles and the health is still good... it gets ~2.5-3 hours per charge.

Not sure why the MB has so many more cycles, my use of each I thought was roughly the same. I believe the predicted life for the MBP battery is ~300 cycles, so probably will get a bit more than 1000 cycles on the new one... say 1500, at my usage rate that would last about 6 years...

Am I missing something? How do you guys know/remember how many charge cycles you have been through? I can't even remember how many craps I took last week :D

I'm just saying ;)

Yep - that simply isn't going to be going away completely any time soon... gotta look at the bigger picture....

Last Macworld and it looks like i didn't miss much. 2800$ in this economy is quite mad. A smarter move would have been to make a netbook killer but we shall see.

10 years ago, we saw the first ibook at macworld 2009.
12 years ago people were upset at steve when he came back to apple, because he wanted to partner with microsoft.

now thats funny

Your computer keeps track of it, and you can view the data with several free apps.

Scale 720p to 1080p and anyone can notice it if you use display which uses 1080p as native resolution. Compare HD to SD on 1080p native and difference is like comparing beauty and the beast.

ok, can someone explain the 1000 charges to me? it doesn't sound like much to me. My laptops are constantly being plugged and unplugged.

That's the first thing that struck me too when I read the release. Who runs out the entire charge on their battery every use and then fully recharges it?

You said there is no difference on a FIFTY inch screen. Maybe your vision isn't so great, but while I'm not blown away by bluray, I can definitely see a difference on screens smaller than that and I'm sure many other people can too.

Well, there are three problems with this "fact":
  1. DVD is 480/576p, not 720p. Even a 39 cm screen with 1440x900 pixels provides twice as many pixels for 16:9 videos.
  2. The viewing distance is typically less than 3 m with computer displays, especially with those built into notebooks.
  3. The pixels are obviously discernible during "computer" use.

I was in an Apple store for about 20 minutes this afternoon waiting for an appointment, and I heard 2 geniuses talking about how they weren't thrilled with the new laptop that was released. I didn't get why, if it was just the 15"'s big brother. Now I see, no Firewire 400, no eSATA, no removable battery, that just kind of stinks big time.

Generally on screens 40 inches and lower, there is no difference, unless you stick your nose right up to the screen, and THEN maybe you'll notice the difference.

On a 17 inch screen? Do they even make 17 inch 1080p screens?

Just click the apple, about, more info, go to power and look for "cycles" - that said, most macbook pro's and such get around 300 cycles before going down to 80%. For me, it can last years if you keep it plugged in and drain it ever so often.

What apple really needs to do, especially in this economy, would be to release NEWER batteries or some sort of POWER mode for existing MB and MBP owners so you can under clock the CPU when browsing the web.

While I know the mac has POWER SAVING abilities, that just turns down brightness and the likes, what we really need is lower FPC/CPU/GPU when doing easy WORD/iWORK/WEB stuff and get the most we can out of the batteries.

Not sure if this or the UNIBODY keynote was the lamest.

Wow apple you suck big time

New macbook pro 17 inch whahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

:apple: Pay extra for matte

:apple: Pay again extra for a bigger screen but the same graphic card as the 15inch model :D

:apple: You cant change the battery but again you pay way more than a extra battery :p

:apple: Only 1 firewire port and they call it the allmighty pro laptop (the best laptop apple can build for you)

:apple: Again still no words about blu ray

Lets face it guys whoever buys this crap is a moron
Get yourself a hackintosh if you really want a BIG laptop with BIG performance..... and let apple think that smaller is better ;) :apple:

I agree.

And yet you can get netbooks with Blu-ray.

I have said it a million times already, but no one listens AT ALL.

When Sony, can make a 11.1" laptop with:
- Blu Ray
- dual SSD or HDD
- HDMI
- two USB
- WiFi and 3G
- 7 hours battery (with larger one that adds weight 5 hours normal)
- Weight of 2.8 lbs.
- And ...... the same price as the high end MBA.

Apple has lost their MIND! Apple... users... miss... SO MUCH... hardware options dealing with Mac OS X.

Sadly I don't think I will ever escape the hurt and pain of dealing with such a company that sees others producing truly innovative machines, while Apple spends millions on thinner 17" MBPs with the computing power of a $400 desktop/$1000 laptop.

Yeah, the battery is a tough one - non-removable sucks, but if it lasts longer per charge, and in general lasts 5 years as Apple claims, it may not be that big of an issue to most users - tough to say.

1080p is just 1920 x 1080.. so the 1920 x 1200 screen on the notebook being discussed is a bit better, albeit a slightly different aspect ratio (16:10 rather than 16:9)

I think Apple's severely lost its edge in the laptop market and gaining the mentality of the rich hoity-toity consumer buying a MBP as a sort of status symbol as oppose to getting supposedly cutting edge stuff that Apple's known for. Don't get me wrong but after seeing other laptops with Bluray built in, hardware color calibration, graphic tablet as a photographer I'm absurdly underwhelmed by what Apple's bringing to the table. Needless to say my next purchase of a laptop WILL NOT be a Mac.. sorry Apple, I love OSX I love the Apple software but I can get CS4 and Lightroom2 on a PC so that negates any logical reason for me to lug around a dated status symbol.

Lets see here the standard glossy screen (which glossy should be an upgrade from) with the possibility of a $50 upgrade to matte is a joke, seriously make the people that want rich vibrant colors pay extra for it not the other way around. Lack of anything bluray found on the laptop to either watch (to which Apple claims the displays are stunning) or produce bluray content for a client and hand them a disk. Isn't Steve Jobs a board member of the Bluray consortium? Yes I know the arguments over Bluray not being popular, hogging boat loads of power to even play a disk but the option should be there u dont want bluray dont buy one with a drive simple as that.

Arent Apples suppose to have the latest features that Windows users wish and dream they had along with the backing of OSX? or is this a sort of decline thats been happening for awhile?

Battery I'm certainly mixed on I like the idea of having it inside, the capacity extended but that leaves me at a disadvantage if I take an extended trip on an airplane, dont have anywhere to plug it in once the battery dies then I'm SOL.

In either case Apple's become the starbucks of the computer world, yes I said it. There's plenty of local mom & pop places that do great coffee.. Heck maybe even better then starbucks but carrying around a starbucks just like an Apple laptop is a status symbol now.

It's that give and take thing again.

I know some users would have loved to have a 17" last up to 8 hours on a charge. Then instead of carrying the book and charger, they'd carry the book and second battery for 16 hours of total use. Eight hours is great, but we are completely LIMITED to 8 hours if you don't have your charger with you.

By the time I upgrade (3 more years) I hope to get 12+ hours and quad core. I'll even leave eSata up to Express Card 34 slots.... and FW800 can be chained... but give me Quad core!

Do they even make 17 inch 1080p screens?

Is this a trick question? Do you actually know what 1080p means?

EDIT: Sorry came bit nasty... But all the so called HD screen laptops have 1080p or higher res. Visual difference between HD and SD video on 17" laptop screen is huge. If you have 1080p computer display download "Big Buck Bunny" on different resolutions and make comparisons.
