During today's iPad-centric event, Apple announced that more than 20 iOS and Mac apps would receive updates over the course of the day. Aperture, Apple's photo editing and management software, has just been updated to version 3.5 adding new features and bug fixes.

The update includes support for iCloud Photo sharing, allowing users to post content to shared streams and add videos to photo streams. Aperture's "Places" feature uses Apple maps to display photo locations, and integration with Smug Mug has been included. Multiple bug fixes have been bundled into the update, and stability and performance improvements have been added as well.
- Adds support for iCloud Photo Sharing, including the ability to post videos to shared photo streams and to have multiple subscribers contribute to a shared stream
- The Places feature now uses Apple maps to display photo locations
- New integration with SmugMug, with support for publishing and syncing galleries directly to a SmugMug account
- Adds support for iOS 7 camera filters applied to photos imported from iOS devices
- Fixes an issue that sometimes resulted in Retouch adjustments not being applied to exported images
- Addresses an issue that could cause the black and white points in Curves to shift incorrectly when using the eyedropper tools
- Fixes a problem that prevented caption data from being embedded correctly when exporting versions of some RAW file types
- Improves reliability when adding names to Faces
- Addresses an issue that could cause Aperture to hang after adjusting a very large panorama
- Fixes a problem that could prevent memory cards or hard disks from ejecting properly after import when clicking the Delete Items button
- Improves reliability of slideshows on a 15" Macbook Pro with Retina display
- Addresses an issue that could cause thumbnails to display incorrectly in the iLife Media Browser
- Videos up to three minutes long can now be shared to Flickr
- Captions instead of version names are now synced between Aperture and Facebook for newly-created albums
- Improves reliability when printing a light table
- Fixes an issue that could prevent adjusted images from being published to My Photo Stream
- Includes stability and performance improvements
Aperture can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $79.99. [Direct Link]

Unlike earlier releases, this one isn't appearing in updates (mine is a DVD purchase) so it looks like I'll have to pay $80 to get it.

However I don't see any new features worth even $1. :(

I want to upgrade from CS3 Photoshop. Aperture or Lighteroom?

Same thoughts here. It seems that I end up paying double for software today, because I have been an early adopter. I bought iWorks on DVD as well, and have to fork out money again to get the latest versions, while new users simply get it for free...

This is just a maintenance update to comply with Mavericks with some features thrown in. It's probably the final update for Aperture 3. The "New Aperture" that Phil Shiller leaked on stage has an all new UI:

Only good for 10.9. Was that necessary? Could this not have also run on 10.8.5 for those of us who don't want to upgrade to Mavericks immediately?

well sorta... users who bought it on the app store (more recently than you bought it on dvd) get it free, but yes it does kinda suck since the version you are upgrading FROM is the same as the app store version.

Exactly, a lot of people jump to conclusions too quickly!

I'd rather Apple spend their time on something like this and release in line with the Mac Pro rather than rushing. Equally I am glad that this update is in place to make sure that no body whines when aperture won't boot after installing Mavericks.

That's a load of crap... I too purchased the DVD a long time ago when 3 came out..so done with Aperture for good. If and when the MP comes out in "December" hello Lightroom

Sure, the Aperture update for those that purchased the DVD isn't in the App Store yet. But the day isn't over. Calm down before you jump to conclusions.

That's the same UI that Aperture 3.x has, sorry to say. In full screen mode, you can dock the HUD on the left or the right. I keep mine on the left, but this person has theirs on the right.

While this could be a shot of Aperture 4, the UI doesn't look different from the view we have [a far-away camera angle of the monitor and a photo of the scene from someone at the event!]

Neither LP nor Aperture is a replacement for PS.

Both LR and Aperture are for adjustments and organizations. There is also some basic edit brushes but NOTHING like what CS3 has for editing and graphics.

You might look at gettng Adobe Photoshop Elements and iPhoto in combination.

Both iPhoto and Aperture allow you to specify an "default image editor" that is launched when you double click an image and photoshop make a good "default image editor".

Same with LR. It integrates well with PS but does not replace PS.

Captions instead of version names are now synced between Aperture and Facebook for newly-created albums

Which, I presume (hope!) means that when you edit the caption in FB it will no longer rename the version in Aperture next time it syncs.

Taken Apple long enough to fix this but better late than never I guess

I'm trying to find a UI arrangement where it looks like the one in the photo and I can't. I have a 27" iMac display and there's no way the HUD gets that narrow. Also, the spacing between thumbnails is much tighter. What tool is that multi colour bar in?

Phil did say "a new version of Aperture" but I guess that can mean a point update but I'm inclined to think this is a new version.

Either way, we know from hiring and from general common sense that Apple is working on a new version of Aperture. What we're all dying to find out is not "if" but "when". I think timed with the release of the new Mac Pro makes sense.

On 3.5: so there's no way to update to Aperture 3.5 if you bought it on disc?

Yeah i don't see a software update for Aperture 3.5 if the app was purchased outside the MAS...bummer..hopefully they are not screwing folks who got it prior to MAS.

That's the major reason why I want this update. Looks like Apple is screwing over early adopters. There's no update available if you purchased it on disc.

Sad to hear :(
But hope apple will be done with 4.0 soon.
like really soon, then i do not care if it is a update i need to pay for or not (will of course hope for not;))

I'm concerned that the un-upgraded Aperture will lose compatibility with iPhoto libraries if I do the free iPhoto upgrade. The Mavericks betas came with a "special" iPhoto, not the new release, that did just that. :( I'm going to check this out on my Mavericks test install, but I don't have my hopes up.

What would really pain me would be to have to pay $80 for 3.5 and then turn around and pay again in a few months for 4.0. 3.5 is certainly not worth it for the feature improvements.

This is a Sharp PN-K321 4K monitor (3,840 x 2,160 pixels), therefor the finer UI.

Makes me wonder when we will see Apple Retina Cinema displays.... looks like Apple is not being able to catch up just yet.
