Yeah i don't see a software update for Aperture 3.5 if the app was purchased outside the MAS...bummer..hopefully they are not screwing folks who got it prior to MAS.

I know, looks like people dumb enough to have paid $200.00 for A3 at introduction might be getting the short end of the stick.

PS CS6 is my tool of choice but I like using Aperture as an organizer. It's also fun to fiddle with. Occasionally A3 can do something that CS6 cannot, but not very often.

It wasn't dumb at the time given the price and features of the competition.. :(

I think Apple will fix this through the normal software update channel, it'd be pretty silly for them not to..

If you update iPhoto it can make your library incompatible with the old version of Aperture.. I can't imagine people being happy about that!

Same thoughts here. It seems that I end up paying double for software today, because I have been an early adopter. I bought iWorks on DVD as well, and have to fork out money again to get the latest versions, while new users simply get it for free...

Yeah this sucks...in plain English. I don't mind paying for software updates but this situation doesn't seem fair at all. New Mac and iPhone/iPad users get it for free which is cool but we already paid for it so why not give it to us also?

I just updated my iOS version of Numbers on my iPad and when I tried opening an existing spreadsheet I received a warning that I will no longer be able to open this spreadsheet on my Mac unless I have the new version installed there also. Not cool:mad:

Avid Aperture user here. I have no interest in an all new version. The current Aperture design works flawlessly on my machine, is easy and intuitive to use, and where there are missing features (distortion adjustments, terrible noise reduction), I have plug-ins to fill in the voids.

Not sure why so many clamor for a new version. Just my .02

It would be amazing to have those features be nondestructive and not take up that space with High-Rez Tiffs.

Do you use a Wacom tablet GuitarTO? Support for external hardware is terrible in Aperture, definitely not Pro friendly. There are no shortcuts or even Command placeholders for individual tools and adjustments. For example, there's no shortcut for changing brush size. One of the most common actions can only be done with a mouse wheel or a touchpad. If you don't use either, you have to keep them around just for that one task. For a pro studio that processes thousands of photos, without dedicated hardware such as a Wacom tablet and a MIDI controller, that's a very good reason to go to the competition for Pro support.

What am I looking for in Aperture X? Besides a cleaner UI, performance improvements and feature matching LR, I want to be able to attach a MIDI controller to physically adjust HUD sliders. I want the industry standard Wacom tablet to be fully supported. And I know I'm asking a lot here but I want Apple to distinguish between their pro and consumer markets and communicate with us differently, to understand that professionals need to know that the tools they invest a lot of time into won't be abandoned.

I've been with Aperture since day 1 but that latter point, the uncertainty, has me seriously considering LightRoom. Like a lot of professionals, we won't go back unless Adobe gives us a reason to. This isn't a threat that I know Apple won't hear, it's an observation. Apple makes Pro software because they hope pros will use it and buy their hardware. If they make subpar Pro software, then they failed at their mission and pros will use something else.

Nonetheless, I'm confident that the next Aperture is coming but really, I -- like many of us here -- are only guessing based on hints. Some professionals can't afford to guess and really, what if Aperture X isn't up to par? We lose that bet because we waited patiently for so long working around Aperture 3's shortfalls only to be on the wrong team, relent and switch to LightRoom which we could have migrated to long ago.

Fingers crossed.

I'm concerned that the un-upgraded Aperture will lose compatibility with iPhoto libraries if I do the free iPhoto upgrade. The Mavericks betas came with a "special" iPhoto, not the new release, that did just that. :( I'm going to check this out on my Mavericks test install, but I don't have my hopes up.

Well, I just finished testing the updated iPhoto and the old Aperture, and they can each open the other's libraries. So it looks like the problem with the betas has been resolved. :)

I updated to the new iPhoto and it updated my library. Aperture 3.45 can't read the library anymore..waiting on the 3.5 update to come available to me.

What is your version of aperture?

Yup. When I tested it I thought the new iPhoto was running. It turns out it wasn't. So it is incompatible. Apple needs to provide this Aperture upgrade!

FYI, Just got my Aperture 3.5 update via the App Store. I installed via disk originally.

Have you purchased any update of Aperture from the Mac App store before? I do not see any updates for Aperture 3.5 and have been on the disc version since the beginning.

I read the "trick" in another thread. Create a new account with administrator privileges called "TEST". Log in and run Update from there. You will see Aperture as well as any iWork apps you installed from DVD. Enjoy!

Nope. Just hang in there and Command + R. It should come eventually.

I thought this software and its development were cancelled years ago along with Quicken.
IMO, doesn't look anything like Quicken.

I bought the boxed version of Aperture 3 and the update is now showing up in the MAS without doing the new user trick. Just needed to be patient it seems.

I wasn't patient and did the new user trick.

I originally installed Aperture 3 from DVD, and it's always appeared in the MAS with the $79.99 button.

After doing the new user trick, it's now showing up under the "Purchases" tab in the MAS for me (as if I had purchased it from the MAS, which I never did), and searching for it manually in the MAS brings it up with the "Install" button having replaced the "$79.99" button.

That's kind of cool. Looks like i won't be needing to keep the DVD and serial number around any more!

Thanks! I guess patience is a virtue as the regular download update is working now through MAS.

Another disc user here - I didn't see the 3.5 update until I rebooted. Didn't have to create a new account.

I think I paid $500(?) for Aperture 1.0 when it came out.

There was no competition back then. Lightroom came out a few months later.

Even with all the competitive upgrades, Aperture is still better than Lightroom. Lightroom is more of a cheap Photoshop, and Aperture is more of a hardcore organizational tool. I rarely use Photoshop, as Aperture with plugins work fine. Mostly just use photoshop for repair brush only.

Aperture is much more useful than Lightroom if you shoot or organize thousands of photos a day, or if you have multiple photographers in an organization. I have to deal with photographers around the world.

Aperture's collaborative workflow needs improvement though - it needs to operate on a client-server database. I think the limit is that it's database uses TinySQL, which is single-user only, instead of a more robust multi-user database like MySQL.

Otherwise, I don't know how Apple could improve Aperture further.

Aperture disk install user here...

Just did a search in the App Store for Aperture and look what showed up.

See, no reason to freak out.

For me it refused to update at first -- kept asking for my Apple ID and password and then nothing would happen. But I restarted the App Store and its now downloading fine.
