No. You can't do that.

Aperture 3 (non trial) will immediately upgrade the library into it's own format. This will forever render it useless to Aperture 2. Since Apple doesn't want lawsuits from people who will then be forced to buy Aperture 3, you can't use an A2 library with the trial.

Right now, with Aperture 3 Trial, I'm importing my whole Aperture 2 library. It just makes a copy of it and imports it to Aperture 3 library format, leaving behind my Aperture 2 library intact.

something for the EDUCATIONAL camp to keep in mind:

The $99 upgrade generally IS NOT available for those who bought the program via Apple's education discount. Sooner or later you will likely have to pony up $199 for the full version IF you want to upgrade. Just a heads up....

As I understand it, the trial version of A3 will not upgrade A2 libraries. If that's the case, how do you do a licensed upgrade from A2 to A3 without waiting for the box to ship? When you buy the upgrade, do you get a serial number that you can immediately use to activate the A3 trial?

In Aperture 3 Trial, click on the Aperture menu and select Authorize where you can enter your serial number. ETA: They might give you a serial no if you buy it online, otherwise you will have to wait.

I don't think that's true. It looks like academic versions of Aperture 2 are upgrade eligible:

From the Apple.com store:

About the upgrade

The Aperture 3 upgrade requires one of the following: a commercial version of Aperture 1.0 or later; or an academic version of Aperture 2.0 or later. Not-For-Resale (NFR) versions are not eligible for the upgrade.

So I've been using iPhoto for the past few months, and mostly, I was happy with it. It's organization is very useful, and although it lacked the editing power, I still used it, because Aperture 2 was just the worst thing for me. It was slow, I saw no point for it, and it was just more confusing.

Now, I just tried Aperture 3. It is significantly faster compared to Aperture 2. Also, it's editing is fantastic. I love it I love it I love it.

I tried importing a few pictures from iPhoto, and a few from a connected camera, and they both work flawlessly.

I have also tried Photoshop CS4, and many of it's photocorrecting features are available on Aperture 3.

Can someone help me?

So imported my iPhoto 09 library and now in Aperture, there are project folders for my hidden photos in iPhoto but I can't access the pictures... Anyone?
I'm going to take a shot at this... Go to your iphoto library data base (should be in HDD/Users/UserX/Pictures) and ctrl-click and click show package contents on the dialog box. Then click on the folder "originals" and look for it in your albums...

I like how so many people are like if you're a pro you don't need FACES.

You are dead wrong. I shoot Sports Photography and Faces will most certainly help me ID'ing players better. It might not be perfect but I'm sure it will save me some time. And anything that saves me time is worth the upgrade.

Seriously if you don't see the point of certain new features than clearly than its obvious you're not a photographer.

Amen. I suspect the people deriding faces haven't used it much. I haven't used it heavily but it saved our bacon when we had to do a family project in a hurry. The accuracy was surprisingly good.

I don't shoot a lot of portraits but I can imagine that after I've got a few hundred of them in my Aperture library that faces will be pretty darn useful.

I suspect that faces in Aperture will be more useful than in iPhoto if only because the quality of the images is likely to be better so the algorithm will have better source material to work with.

Anyone know if the new version is going to be available at retail Apple stores today? I'd rather go buy in person because I can fake that I'm still a college student and get a discount ;)
It's easier to fake your educational discount on line since there's no paper work to fill out. At the store you have to show current school ID & fill out a form. Go ahead save your 18 bucks

This is soo not the news we're waiting for :D

I know, disappointment from folks awaiting a hardware update, but for some of us, this is the MOST important and impressive announcement from Apple in recent memory.

Aperture 3 is a huge and material improvement over Aperture 2 - with Merge and Sync library functions to allow work on the road to match up with the master library on the MacPro; the non-destructive brushes the absence of which kept so many of us with Lightroom 2 even though we like the interface and RAW conversion of Aperture more; the data management features across drives - photos in any location along the lines of what LR has provided for; and the ground breaking multi-media capabilities of Aperture as a data management library tool for video and editing video and stills in single projects in the program. They've even integrated professional book service options like Leather Craftsman.

While some Aperture users like Joe McNally, Jim Richardson, and Chase Jarvis knew this was coming, this was a VERY well kept secret with no whispers out there in the photography community. The improvements are massive and eclipse what LR was able to do and promise to further make digital workflow better with some features that should reduce the number of trips to Photoshop CS4 as well.

This is the most excited that I've been about any software that I can recall (I can't recall ever really being that excited about software, period).

Looks like I'll be upgrading. Sad fact is my wife just got A2 @ Christmas for me and now I get to spend $99 to upgrade. < 60 days and another $99 seems wrong but what can one do.

Glad to know the Nik plug-ins work because last week I purchased the Complete Collection. :D

I'm feeling negative - only because I bought Aperture 2 on Dec 20th to go with my new iMac.

I could say as a MR reader you should have been savvy enough to have been cognizant of all the wispers last Fall that Aperture 3's release was just a few months away. It's always "buyer beware" when considering Apple s/w. Buyers that don't keep up with the release rumors are playing "Cupertino Roulette." It is fair, no, but Apple gets away with it just the same.

However, you are correct that Apple should extend its Up-To-Date program to pro apps purchased within 3-6 months of a new version release. Nearly every other s/w maker has this type of policy -- including, ahem, M$ -- for mid, high end s/w. No real excuse for Apple not to offer even a free upgrade via d/l.

I understand Apple's need to not disclose products up until release, but it's bad business to "burn" customers in this way. And of course the corollary is that if you respect customers it will only bring the company more sales via repeat biz and word of mouth.

How much does this mid/high level software cost? Aperture is remarkably cheap for what it is. For example the Photoshop CS4 upgrade has a list price of $199.99. I suggest that Apple don't necessarily need to offer this due to the very reasonable price of Aperture.

Brilliant. Admitting on the Internet to planning on committing fraud.

Go buy it at Amazon. It's effectively the same price as the Edu after taxes. Use the trial version until then. When you get your box version just put the serial# in the trial version installed on your machine and it should convert to a full version.

Is this crashing constantly for anyone else - or just me?

Not for me, I imported one of my libraries (about 7k worth of pictures) and its been quite solid. I was also able to import the DNGs from lightroom as well. While the processing of the 7k too a few hours, A3 handled that quite well.

If you click Buy from the trial, you will get a choice of buying a trial activation key via email or ordering the physical media. I got the key via email for my copy of Aperture 2 Academic and was given the serial number immediately on checkout and via an email moments later.

Mid priced s/w is $100 to $300. High priced $300-1000. Above $1000 is typically geared for commercial uses only. Anyway you are missing the point 100%. Agreed Aperture's price is very reasonable IF you are buying it for the first time or are upgrading after many months use. BUT it's not so reasonable if you just bought Aperture 2 a month ago for $199 and now have to spend another $99 again after such a short time span.

As I said in my earlier post, nearly every other s/w maker has a policy of offering free update if you bought the previous version 3-6 months prior. Even VMWare Fusion, which is low priced, offered 3.0 for free if you bought 2.0 months before. It's not something Apple has to do, of course, but it would be good biz if they did. As-is, its just fodder to those who say Apple is arrogant.

You have to draw the line somewhere. 3-6 month price protection is a little much.

I think if you are under 2 months, you can probably call Apple and they will take care of you. We had bought FCS2, deployed it to the user, and then FCS3 came out. We were able to return it and get FCS3 within about a 2 month period.

It may not be a stated policy, but generally Apple is pretty good about this stuff in my experience.
