i cannot believe that the price for educators and students for this program is discounted so much!

CAD$599 to $299!! that's amazing.

I wonder if there will be watermarks/limitations. I was told FC had those in the student package, so I didn't buy it :(

WOW - I just watched the various quicktime demos of the software, and my reaction was - holy moses, this is how image processing workflow should have been done all along. Raw workflow has been the buzz of nearly every pro photo forum for years now, I think because it's been such a pain in the butt. This app just blows me away! I can't wait.

The image stack and organizing functions look amazing. The dual monitor support looks fabulous. The lift and stamp (or whatever it's called) looks unbelievable. I don't know what machine they used for recording the demos (perhaps the new quad), but it was fast fast. Those are D2x RAWs, and it seemed lightning fast.

This is a great example of what makes Apple unique. While everyone else is tagging on a bucket of new features to their bloated image processing and cataloging apps, Apple steps in and just completely re-thinks what people are REALLY TRYING TO DO, and the introduces something that elegantly does just that. Perfect perfect perfect.

Now, if only they'd rush the release of a 3ghz dual core intel based laptop for me to run this app with.

This was exactly my reaction ...I've been shooting nearly 100% RAW for 2 years now and I still constantly fiddle with my workflow. And my jaw dropped with those D2X RAWs --WOW!

Apple really tries to listen to the pros who are out there truly working and then they address specific issues -- not just "throw the book" at the problem.

My Aperture order goes in tomorrow. Not if I can just slip a Quad G5 on the purchase order....

um

Artifex,

The only limitation to the Student version of FCP is that it's not upgradable...other than that, there are no limitations and no watermarks. Whoever told you that was a moron.

If you watch the demos, as the narrator clicks on certain items there is a noticeable delay. Especially, when they show off how the magnifier can be used to view other images in the image library strip at the bottom. Now, I would think they are using a top-of-the-line Quad PowerMac G5 with tons of RAM and the most expensive graphics card to do the demo. If that's true, just imagine how this app will run on the minimum supported systems.

I would wait for reviews, before purchasing such an expensive piece of software.

We use Final Cut Pro at my college, and I haven't came in contact with any watermarks or limitation. As far as I know, Apple always ships the full product with academic versions of their software.

One thing you are missing...

There's one big question that needs to be addressed, that no one is, and is the most important...

How good is the RAW processing?... If it's better than Bibble, ACR, Nikon and Canon OEM software, then this will rule.

If it isn't, and we still need that other software, then it's very limited in it's usefulness.

Here's hoping it can replace all those other RAW processors.

I'll be waiting, no matter how difficult that might be, until I get my hands on this in an Apple Store. I'm looking to replace my 1.25GHz 15" PowerBook (which is surprisingly at the bottom of the list of supported Aperture hardware) with one of the new 1.67GHz 15" PowerBooks, but before I do I want to see how that model handles Aperture. Hopefully Apple will install this on their demo hardware. If they don't, that won't be a very good sign for me. I might have to stick it out with my current laptop and get a desktop to run this app (not that that would be such a bad thing).

Reviews are one thing, but hands on experience with similar hardware to what you have (or want) is the only way to go, especially for a $250, version 1.0 app.

Oh, and one more thing :)D), the new photo book controls built in to Aperture are awesome!! This is something they should definately have trickle back down to iPhoto and Pages. This is one feature I can't wait to try out. Hopefully Apple will have gotten rid of the page limits on their book printing (and reduced the costs significantly). I wonder how long it will be before Aperture shows up in stores? :D :D

is this leopard?

I don't know if anyone noticed but the demos of this app on apples website doesnt look like its running on tiger. magnify glass effect...even the images seem like they have their own independant resolution and to top it off, the voice over is not of a real human but sounds like it is being generated by the computer itself..plus the app has the abilty to remove the top bar to replace it with its own specific tool bars.

Here's an interesting snippet;

Aperture also includes advanced options for creating books and Web galleries. Not only do photo books created through Aperture offer higher resolutions than what you get from iPhoto, they also give you more flexibility to customize the design and layout. The Web gallery also offers easier customization and outputs HTML files that you can then post on any site, not just .Mac. You can even create “smart” Web galleries that filter images according to your criteria—such as rating—and then update automatically as that criteria changes. You can also order prints of your photos.

No, it's definitely Tiger, and it's definitely a real human—an Australian most likely. The magnifying glass is just something from Core Image and the top bar is unified and has its own specific tools, similar to today's Mail.

This seems like a really slick app, but it does drag slightly in the demo and the audio clicks in the demonstration are interesting enough. Apple, what's up with the wider-than-1024 layout for Aperture? Even with pros, surely they would know this is a no-no.

Take a look at the minimum requirements - this is not a piece of SW for backwards compatibility, but to look towards the future ...

I think it is a REAL GPU hog, and I expect we will all find that that (rather than the CPU) to be the big bottleneck with older machines.

iPhoto

Now imagine what features will trickle down to iPhoto 6. Full sceen editor/organizer? Maybe. Stacks? You betcha.

I'm also expecting a Dark Platinum iTunes-style look across all of iLife.

It's a Pro app - the 'Pros' have the equipment - or will upgrade shortly to meet the requirements.

This isn't for you and your momma.
Except that unfortunatley we cant afford this sexy new software where I work at the moment. Mind you we do ok with what we are currently using. :(

This app looks very cool - just the sort of thing I've been looking for really.
I would love to shoot more pictures in RAW, but they're just so hard to manage and organise. iPhoto doesn't seem to like the MRW files from my Minolta DSLR, so that's a pain. I hope Aperture supports them.

RAW is definately a great format though - it's fantastic for night-time photography. No need to worry about trying to get the white balance perfect then and there, just shoot and fix it when you get back, without any negative effect on image quality.

Wishful thinking at this point me thinks.
Magnifying glass effect is part of Core Video....the voiceover IS human....just not American...What? British? Australian? New Zealand?
And tiger DOES support IR but not on a per app basis. . Apple may simply be diving into the underbelly of tiger to get that functionality now. Pretty sure at this point Apple is still pre Alphaing Leopard.

Most Common Reply to Photoshop CS Upgrade

Everyone who upgraded to CS always mentions the new browser capability as the coolest most practical function of the program. However it still feels like a stop gap measure and Aperture fits the bill. Coming from the silver age of photography I hardly take advantage of the creative power of photoshop, but I shoot pretty straight and prefer to do most of the work in-camera. All I really want is to be able to protect the integrity of my image data and manage my image archive, making it easy to produced images from web pages to .tiff DVD's for clients to inkjet prints. Thats it.
