Boot Camp doesn't work if you have formatted your drive with 2 partitions :(

I really regret doing that now.

Any way you can make your 2 partitions into 1 without reinstalling OS X?

Would really like to avoid erasing the whole drive to try Boot Camp.

There are a few ways of doing this, take your question to one of the support forums, or Mac Basics and Help .

This could be a good thing, but one of two things COULD happen which would make it a very bad thing

1. People could buy macs with no intent on ever switching OS just because they like the machines. This could lead to huge quantities of people with Mac hardware only running Windows which over time would cause Apple to focus on Windows users and could slow down Apple's interest in OS X and other Apple software, this would be a very, very bad thing, but with a bit of luck Apple won't let it happen.

2. If developers think it would be very easy for Mac users to run Windows and run their apps within it on their macs then Windows would be used on Macs and this would then lead to the problems of my first point, something really we can live with out I think. Obviously developers like Adobe will always develop for mac because they know it's best, but many developers who just "added Mac support as they went along" won't.

It all makes sense now... Apple is not going to give up its OS: Microsoft will!!! They will make Office and PPC products but give up on the OS because of all the headaches! When Vista is introduced, there will be a big cake rolled out onto the floor of the stage. The lights will dim, a spotlight will shine on the cake. Drumroll... Out leaps a Leopard from the cake and devours Ballmer, signifying the death of all that was wrong with MS. All hail our new Mac Overlords!!!

I've read all 19 pages of this thread, and I'd like to thank you for making it worth my while to get to the 18th page. This is the post of the thread, without question.

I too am in the "wait and see" camp. I don't need windows, but I know a lot of people do. I can probably even convince some people to switch because of this. But, the possibility that people will stop developing for X is a major, major concern. So I'll wait and see before passing judgment on this...

Ok. First of all I almost fell over when I read this morning. Never thought it would happen, especially directly from Apple.

I already have Windows installed on my MBP, If i download this Beta Software will I get Video Drivers Automatically or will I have to reinstall windows all over?
I'd create the OS X disc through Boot Camp and then boot windows and see what happens. I think long term though this is a much better solution for most people than going around the houses with Terminal etc.

Just imagine if Apple had been a few weeks earlier on this, they would have won the contest. :D

I checked on my stocks, I love how I know apple has released something new when their stock goes up almost 4 percent in 3 hours.

Well, now you can afford it, right!;)

its all good

I study programming.
Im required to to .net developpement, and frankly, i dont hate .net at all. I need Visual Studio for that !
There's tons of developpers that will buy mac hardware if they could continue working on their exiting product.

Now i will be able to run both on my laptop (once i upgrade my current powerbook to new macbookpro).

I know a little bit of Objective-C, but really, as a programmer that is required to do desktop apps, learning objective-C is a little pain, considering the market opportunity.

What Apple should do next ? Allow use to write os x program (including interface and core function) in c++. I know there's objective-c++, but it still require you know quite a bit of objective-C.

Apple should also support .net natively. If i could port my code easily from window to mac, including GUI, i would develop more for the mac.

I use mac because i love OS X, i love final cut pro, ilife and other, not because i hate windows.

This is a good thing for Apple. I for one will make use of this feature, and I think it will open the floodgates for potential switchers, especially when a little more driver support is available.

So does anyone else think many users will adopt the software philosopy "Buy the OSX version, pirate the XP version"?

Obviously, I would never endorse such a thing.

When people start benchmarking please include some 3Dmark benchmarks. I wish I could get home and try this out. I'm stuck on a windows pc at work.

The more I think about it and the more I am concerned.
A few days ago Apple announced the departure of the top OSX architect.
Can it be a due to "difference of opinions" on the death of the mac platform?

This is the BIG issue, i don't care a hoot for market share or games as long as i have OSX; and with the top architect gone, this seems a little more than coincidence. oh dear:(

Also, why make OS X software / support OS X users if they can be merged with the other 95% of your users?

Because they won't accept being merged. Many users will never install this or pay the $$$ to buy XP. And many users will switch to a competing OSX app if a company drops OSX support.

Still, try to see it at the software publisher/management point of view.

Some software developers already don't have an OS X version (5% marketshare). Mac users who install Windows further lower the OS X marketshare (since they can now run Windows software). You really think companies will make an OS X version if OS X-only users are 2% of the market? Aside from Photoshop and niche market products that already are on the Mac, I don't see it happening.

From the management point of view: you either use Windows on your Mac (which won't be a Mac anymore when you get a new computer, BTW) or you don't work here anymore. It sounds harsh, but in some places that's the way it works.

Me, as a home user, won't buy/install Windows on my Mac. It does almost everything I need, aside from running Guild Wars (so I play WoW on my Mac instead). But with the Nintendo Revolution coming soon, I won't really care about computer games anymore (I already play a lot of Tetris DS, for one).

How many more in 30 minutes?

So, after 19 pages (which I've read in its entirety, sadly), how much momentum can this thread still have? I'm leaving work now, and I'm looking forward to seeing how many pages have gone by when I arrive.

Keep it going!

Edit: The answer is--- 7 more!

Anyone know if you can use a OEM copy of XP or if you have to use a full retail version?

So glad I chose the 120 GB HD instead of the 7200 RPM 100 GB HD for my 1.83 Ghz MBP! I just have to convince my parents to by me a copy of windows. I believe New Egg has the OEM XP Professional version for cheap.

I'll only need one MacBook Pro to have both OSes to support my clients.
Just thinking the same thing - our office, while predominantly Macs, still has a few Windows machines around.

Nice of Apple to take a stand on this so it's not just a hacker thing - by the time Leopard rolls around, it will hopefully be easier to install than it even currently is, and sport more drivers (though Apple might want to hold back some so folks have an incentive to use OS X - give the Open Source folks some time and they'll all be there, though).

I wonder if Leopard, or some 10.5.* update, will support Vista when it's (finally) released?

I suppose somebody should have seen this coming:

1) Dr. Tevanian pursues "other interests;"

2) Eerie silence over the weekend (perhaps in contemplation of this monumental occasion);

3) Extensive 10.4.6 update;

4) MBP revisions shipping...

I just hope Apple has a good end game in mind and this is more than a money grab. I think they do, but unfortunately business and idealism are not often seen together.

Chyron?

To 99.9999% of the public, this post will seem foreign, but if anyone has any good news about running Chyron Lyric with Boot Camp, please let me know.

(and then I'll make plans to order a MBPro next refresh)

Newegg does have it for cheap. I hope the OEM works. It should.

Is this for real? Has anyone tried it yet?

I think the "pooping his pants" comment about Michael Dell is just about right.

I want an intel mac now just to try it!

-alywa

I'm curious, why would Michael Dell poop in his pants?. Has apple also announced a significant price decrease for their hardware?. Everyone in this group assume that there are tons of users just waiting to try OSX.. i got news for you people. There are not tons of people waiting to try OSX. I know, i know.. who the hell am i to say that?. Hmmm.. i am a system builder.. the one question people always ask is "Is that cheaper than a dell?". A lot (and i mean an awfull lot) of people like cheap computers. I know, we as apple owners cannot fanthom someone wanting to buy cheap computers (or should i say, computers cheaper). It seems illogical to us. As apple users (i count myself as one since my home machine is a $4400 dollar apple computer with an additional $600 dell monitor).. we see no problem with apple making ridiculous margins on their hardware. Unfortunately, would be switchers are not that interested in helping Jobs get that next big boat or the exotic island he has been eyeing for a while, like hell they will pay a premium just to be able to run mac OSX and then have to pay extra money for a windows disk to install windows. I'm not a betting man, but i think Michael is sleeping peacfully these days. Just a hunch.. i have no inside info on his bedroom or anything.

You are all missing the point, the point is anytime XP crashes, it will reboot and the user will end up in OS X unless they are holding the option key...
Result? all the people will end up using OS X and leave XP as soon as they can.
This is sooo well thought ;) BTW i used OS/2 trough all the dark ages and this is not the same case, Apple is calling the shots, the OS wars have started... again.

It restarts in whatever you were in before so if XP crashes it will boot straight back into XP.
