I don't know if this has been mentioned, cause I can't read this entire monster of a thread. Did you all notice that it only works for Windows XP and not Vista? I'm thinking this is definitely a switcher grab idea. My guess is that there will never be Vista support at all. That way, developers will still have reason to write for OS X and Apple can say, "Hey, you'll need new programs for Vista, why not try a Mac instead. OS X kicks ass!"

Brilliant.

Where is that limitation stated? I see reference to both theoretically being enabled, even given the EFI issue.

Installing XP on a mac doesn't lower the OSX marketshare. Sure, it raises the XP marketshare, since with dual boot you can go over 100%. But as more macs are sold, OSX market share goes UP regardless of what other OS's may be installed.

It lowers the "OS X-only" marketshare (the way it was, before today).

Mac users: 5 (OS X)
Windows users: 95 (Windows)

Two Mac users install Windows.

Mac users: 3 (OS X only)
Mac users: 2 (OS X and Windows)
Windows users: 95 (Windows)

The "I can only run OS X software" % just went down two percent and the "I can run Windows software" just went up two percent.

I do agree that marketshare is only sales, and that this move may increase Mac sales, but what I said above can be applied to all Intel-Mac users if they do install Windows.

hahahah all those people searching forever for a way to install windows and all those countless hours gone to waste by Apple doing it themselves

Well obviously Apple didn't know that they could have won over $10,000 if the released this before narf came up with his dual boot solution...

That's a really good point. When I first read they weren't supporting Vista, I figured they were staying hush about it until Vista finally crawled out of its cave. However, it could be a big selling point for them. A lot of people will have to get new hardware & software for Vista. So, if they're making the switch already, why not switch to OS X where they can also keep their wonderfully familiar install of Windows XP as well.

What makes you think this won't support Vista? It says right there on the site:

EFI and BIOS

Macs use an ultra-modern industry standard technology called EFI to handle booting. Sadly, Windows XP, and even the upcoming Vista, are stuck in the 1980s with old-fashioned BIOS. But with Boot Camp, the Mac can operate smoothly in both centuries.

That tells me that Vista is good to go on Macs

Another Nail

been trying to convince my boss that a WinXp on Intel Mini lab woud rock. Narf was a good solution but too 'tech' for him to really grasp. That and re-imaging the lab etc, etc. This may be the ammo I need to get him to buy me a PowerBook erm MacBook to *cough cough* test my senario.

What adoption rate do you think Boot Camp will really have? Remember that you actually have to go buy an XP license, this is not a freebie.

5%? 10%? Overall Mac market share has grown by at least that over the last year or 2. And will continue to grow in the months and years ahead. The total userbase of Mac-only users will be higher a year from now, even after you subtract the people who really set up their Macs to be dual-boot.

You could have also made this theoretical argument for VirtualPC, why should developers bother with a Mac version when you can just ask people to use VPC (especially for programs that are not CPU intensive.) But again, actual number of VPC users compared to total Mac user base is small.

That will never happen, atleast I think. Can't say never to anything apple does.

But from business point, it would instantly kill the whole mac platform for software. The decent middle ground is, reboot to run windows app. so that if that software is available natively for mac, you would buy it rather than just emulate it from your windows copy.

I will get one of these if ..

With this piece of news, I will the first in line to purchase one of the 12" Macbook if/when they come out.

I still think it's very possible that it'll support Vista. It most likely will. But at the same time, it would offer Apple some leverage when people go to make the switch. Maybe they could delay Vista support, so that many people will decide to pick up a Mac instead of a new Vista box. Then after lots of the Vista steam has blown away, they can add support for it.

How awesome would have it have been if this announcement was released on Apple's 30th anniversary - April Fool's Day?

APPLE WILL NOW BE MY FOREVER BRAND, APPLE, YOU HAVE JUST EARNED A MILLION CUSTOMERS BY DOING THAT! Which means, BETTER OS X PRODUCTS, MORE MAC SUPPORT!

Now I am switching, for sure.

I cant help but think Apple has done this to net a load of people who plan to buy a mac "because they are cool" but who are going to run windows. Then when curiosity gets the better of them they try OSX and realise it pisses all over Windows and so a dedicated switcher is born!

However Windows still seems to be clawing its way onto a mac. I cant help but think in about 2 years time OSX will come on a hybrid Windows disk which asks 'Which OS I want to install today?'

On one hand its good, on the other its bad. Makes me wish i had only one hand!

No Sir, I don't like it!

But the XP-on-Mac contest was crucial because it demonstrated that there was significant interest in dual-booting. I wouldn't be suprised if Boot Camp was developed months ago just for the heck of it but was only reseased as a product after Apple saw that many people were very interested in dual booting, especially current Winbdows users contemplating a switch.
I can assure you that if they released it today they've had it since well before the contest was over (they probably had it even before they released the MBP, if only for internal use). Would have been funny if Apple released this before the onmac contest deadline and collected the $14K. :p

I now know what I'm doing this weekend, since I have been unable so far to get a number of the games my kids enjoy to work well on the iMac, and this should take care of that. All I need to do is order an non-upgrade/non-Dell XP install disc. (narf's approach still seemed like way too much of a kludge to do unless I had to.)

I couldn't agree more. This will be HUGE for Apple. It's stock price is reflecting that, too.

Do you think Mr.Gates will follow suit and release an official program to let Windows users install OSX..... I think not!

I'm shocked, but I'm still gonna keep my powerpc iMac for awhile...maybe I'll get an intel iMac around the rev. c or d release though...I already got a crappy windows pc.

This thread has moved into the #5 position on the top News forums. (Just sort by replies.) Pretty sweet. Let's keep it going.

There's no such thing as "XYZ-only marketshare". Such a thing can't even be measured. Nobody will know how many mac users install XP. How would they?

The only marketshare metric we have is what OS is sold on a box. For OSX, that number has been going up, and with this it will likely go up even more.

Do you have to format your drive to partition it? Also, do you have full control of the system through Windows Control Panel?
Requires a USB mouse/keyboard - I guess it doesn't have bluetooth drivers. For shame.

People may not buy more Windows licenses...

1. There are a ton of bootlegged copies of XP out there
2. Many Mac users *already* have a copy of XP from home or office

Short term losses in OS marketshare will lead to longer term gains from the Dual-boot effect.
