Shouldn't it run anyways? You can use the chrome store to install extensions - at least this has been my experience.
Does it not work in Edge?
Not from my experience. You can install extensions from third party extension stores, like the Chrome Web Store, but how iCloud for Windows handles Chrome integration, it'll launch Chrome to install the extension when you enable the Chrome synchronization. When I manually installed the iCloud for Chrome extension in Edge I personally found no method to make the iCloud for Windows app interact between the two.

I'm in UK. The latest version I just pulled from the Microsoft store is 11.6.32.0

The app store text states 'Support for iCloud Passwords Chrome extension' - but I believe that is related to v12.0 which it refuses to pull down....

Something odd going on with the store I think..?

Sure, but Apple has publicly stated that it intends to transition away from this model. Just the other day, Tim Cook was talking about how they want to be in areas where hardware, software and services intersect. That means building out the "services" part so that it is working as hard as the other two. They won't achieve that by attempting to make everyone use Apple services on Apple devices. Simply isn't going to happen. They need to expand. They are already putting more and more services onto the browser iCloud portal. They are putting Apple TV software and AirPlay onto Roku, consoles, televisions.

The idea that they're going to cling onto Photos specifically, because for some reason that's the killer thing that's keeping people tied to the Mac hardware, is completely fanciful and misunderstands Apple's strategy.
Apple will never abandon the strategy to get more people to buy Apple hardware. Photos (on every Apple device, even Apple TV), iMessage (huge having it on the Mac) Safari hand off, favorites, cloud syncing with passwords and favorites to other Apple devices, Music across all devices, Watch integration with all of it, Air pods easily move from one Apple device to another. They simply will never give up on this strategy.

Apple hands down, has the very best eco system. Google is second but they are lack luster and the whole privacy issue just keeps getting worse. Microsoft has a business ecosystem and nothing really consumer anymore. I guess Xbox has a some small tie in with OneDrive but it's pretty lame to be honest.

Yes Apple is expanding where it makes sense. Bring more people in to the fold and if 1/4 of them buy Apple hardware all the better. Also you can get to photos on the web via iCloud. I do this for notes and photos on Windows if I have too. That said I barely touch Windows anymore with my recent job responsibilities change and I am so glad for it.

It seems to be just luck if you get 12, I am in the same boat as you for 11.6 only, brought strongbox over the weekend too and if I knew what apple was planning I could of saved myself a few quid!

Not sure if it helps but if you use https://store.rg-adguard.net/ with the ProductID of 9pktq5699m62 this will show the current version of iCloud on the Windows store for you.

Now if anyone has 12 they can probably use the above to show the link then you can install the .appx package just by double clicking on it

It has been quite an interesting pivot, yes, but I'm not convinced it would work for Apple. (Nor do I see signs they're interested in that. Services as an add-on, sure. But what Microsoft is doing is essentially moving away from their existing big money makers Windows and Office. The equivalent would be for Apple to gradually move away from selling Mac and iOS hardware, and, yeah, no.)
You can even compare the two any more really.

Microsoft = Cloud Subscription. Everything Microsoft is doing is focused on one gaol increase cloud subscriptions. They want consistent monthly revenue. M/O365, Azure, Xbox Game Pass that is Microsofts future. They will ride out Windows for what is worth but it is a dying product for them. Outside of PC gamers, which only make up a tiny portion of the Windows PC marketshare, no consumers really choose Windows because they like it. They use a PC because they need a computer and they buy something cheap, $600 or less.

If they can afford it they move to the Mac or what I really see these days is people moving away from computers for their personal needs. I am shocked how many people do not have a computer these days, opting for a smartphone or tablet for their personal needs. Or they get a laptop from their job and use it for whatever personal computing task does not work well on a smartphone or tablet, basically saving them the money not spent on a personal computer.

Yes you can install this on edge or chrome but the icloud app needs updating version 12 doesnt seem to be getting installed from the windows store, it says it was updated today but it's still installing version 11.6

you can check the version by opening the icloud app and in the upper right corner it'll display the version
I would highly suggest NEVER using the Windows store. It is pure garbage. The last time I installed iTunes ( a while ago) on a Windows computer I skipped using the store version and went straight to Apple site to down load the software.

if you get icloud from there you only get version 7.x

This is very cool, but I've mostly switched to LastPass now.
Same. Have been using LastPass for a few years now. I'll have to see if there are any benefits beyond what LastPass provides. Apple has a history of stopping support for some features within other ecosystems though.

Uh. When was the last time you used Windows?

If neither Apple nor third parties are enticed to make software that's exclusive to the OS, what is the point?

I just don't really know what you're talking about at this point to be honest. Across Windows, MacOS, Android and iPhone, there isn't that much software that is exclusive to any particular OS or platform any more, particularly from major vendors. The value in the computing industry isn't in pushing consumers towards your platform and keeping them there. It's in providing the best and most complete user experience, which Apple undoubtedly does, and continues to do despite making its services available across other OSes at the same time.

I'm not really clear on what point you're trying to make.

Absolutely. I never said Apple were "abandoning hardware." I said they're adopting a more platform-agnostic strategy and taking a more open approach to how they want people to use Apple products without necessarily immediately tying them into the walled garden, which is just observably true and has been stated by several Apple execs. I don't really get what is being argued with here about what I'm saying.

I don't think Apple has to port the Photos app; all the Photos sync to Windows has to do better is to replicate the folders and albums you have set up on the Mac, or iPhone.

I think they definitely care. A leak of people's iCloud passwords wouldn't be a good look for Apple even if it was Google's fault.
I didn't say Apple doesn't care about the security of it's users (obviously they do) I was saying that they are not putting forth resources making sure Chrome is secure for its iCloud system. That's on Google, just as it is it's users who choose to use Chrome rather than Safari.

Either Apple believes Chrome+their extension is secure, or they don’t. They’re not gonna risk releasing this and then back paddling by blaming Google.
