Is it just me, or a 24" iMac would've been nice to show on stage with whatever that "Showtime" thing might be? That would, at least, have made some sense to at least start by showing that.

Which means the september 12th presentation must be really packed with new stuff if they couldn't even announce the 24" iMac at that event. They've also bumped the CPUs on the Mac mini today, so that makes two updates on the same day too.

It's also weird to see new releases on a wednesday...

...why do people keep thinking it's so weird?

It was Labor Day on Monday. Apple ALWAYS has Wednesday updates on holiday-weeks.

Although if you're not from the U.S....I could see why it would be weird...

As a MBP owner who bought a rev1 model right when they came out -- and has been sending it in to fix its many, many problems constantly, and is now seeing it lag behind the iMacs in speed and power -- I feel like I bought a lemon. Thanks, Apple, for pissing in my face.

....

As everyone says, technology will always get better and better. You should be happy that Apple is updating its computers, so that when you need a new one, you'll get the latest and greatest (it's much better than never updating and having to wait months and months for a puny, pathetic upgrade...)

As for your problems, I'm sorry :( - I haven't had a single problem with my MacBook Pro yet <fingers crossed> :)

Get over it..you knew the risks.....I hate when people do this. I have 2 Rev A Macs, one has had 3 problems 2.5years, my Mini has been flawless.

The Mac Pro dude, the Mac Pro is the desktop.

Funny, I though it was labeled as a workstation. And used workstation parts. And cost as much as a workstation.

My mistake! It's actually a reasonably priced desktop.

... Or not.

Merom in the iMacIntel does leave a space in the lineup for the Conroe Mini-Tower.

I swear, you MUST be using that as a running joke. I mean, its just got to be for laughs now, right?

Tell me *next* Tuesday...

I feel the same way with my black MacBook, which is awaiting a DHL box. I guess there was something behind those who say they'll wait for Rev B, afterall :D .

Mini Drives down price...

Anyone notice that you can configure a Mac Mini with a 160 GB hard drive. They're 2.5" aren't they? So that suggests 160 GB will be an option in Apple notebooks soon.

I guess that's not really an unexpected move. I only hope that we get a real 2nd Gen MBP with goodies that have developed since the first (rushed out?) attempt. I'd like one right now, but the longer we have to wait, the more optimistic I get.

Things I'd like in a 15" MBP: Easy-change drive/RAM, faster superdrive, FW800, Macbook-style latch & keyboard.

Why though are the MacBook drives so much more expensive on BTO?!? £80 more expensive to go from 60-120 on a MacBook V's the mini... Same drive surely....

UGH why haven't they updated the MBP's yet?? Apple has totally dropped the ball on this year's college students for sure (at least those looking for apple laptops). My girlfriend is required to buy a MacBook Pro for interior design, and I keep telling her to wait because Merom has got to be right around the corner.

What about the laptops???? MBP's haven't been updated once and iMacs have been getting all the love. Count it!

eeeeeesh - has Dell even started shipping their Core 2 Duo laptops!?!?!? The iMacs were in greater need of an update than the Macbook Pros (they haven't been selling as well) - now that the iMacs have made the transition, though, I'm sure we'll see some new Macbook Pros by the end of Sept....

May I be the first to say: Where's our desktop?
If you're referring to a Mac Pro, I know that mine shipped last night from CA and is currently in East Boston. Should be here this afternoon and then I can finally connect up my 30" ACD.

iMac Gov. Employee prices

For those who care, here's the prices for the iMacs at the Government Employee discount on Apple's on-line store. (not that they ever really check who is a Government employee or not):

20" = $1410
24" = $1880

Me and Aiden are working as fast as we can, OK. We'll have them done soon... :p

As a MBP Merom dreamer i feel... well like I dont know how I feel....
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

If I was optimistic I would say the must have cleared the iMac out for a reason. Perhaps the new MBP will have a few more changes than just C2D to speak about so they updated iMac got it out and will now use the MBP as a big speaking event along with the iTunes Movie store and stuff...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another note, this must mean that the ACD's will eventually jump to 24"?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

And one last thing. No MBP Merom and no crying smiley face to show my expression...

Hmm, slightly off topic but maybe we'll see a 40" ACD soon with the 30" dropping to the mid-size and the 24" becoming base. Eeek! 40" of estate...thats alot of estate.

Enough already with Mini-Tower crap. It will never happen. Apple does not like to copy the PC world.

Except for swapping out a video card, why would anyone need one! You have two options, an iMac or a Mac Mini.

Well, the iMacs haven't been updated once since they were released. This is the first update. The MBPs have been given speed bumps so I don't know what you are talking about. I'm sure the MBPs will be give C2D soon.

Under Buy options when you spec out a new iMac or Mac Mini.

why does it say 50% faster. i thought merom was only 20% faster than yonah?

From what I understand, it is 20% faster at the same clock speed. They are comparing a 2.0 CD to a 2.33 C2D so maybe that's where the 50% faster stat comes from.

So, does anyone want to buy this option with their mac and I'll pay the $60 for both of them. Ok... $70 for your time and shipping. ;)

Well, lets see where would they put it? Between Mac Mini and iMac.... you know in that $200 difference. Or maybe between iMac and Pro Mac.... in that what $300 difference. It seems like the Mac Mini bump and iMac expansion have left no room in the line-up for another Mac. Even with conroes... all speeds, sizes, prices are covered. There isn't room for a Conroe Mac. Period.

They probably aren't even going to use Conroe chips because I bet its a lot more work to redesign the iMac to use Conroe and then set up another supply chain just for Conroe chips when they could just use Merom and Woodcrest solely, it seems to fulfill their line-up well and makes it simpler for logistics.

I bet you a BT Might Mouse we won't see a Conroe Mac in the next 4 months.

Spot on and intelligently put. ;)

Merom. + 'Low End' appears to be education model...

First, these definitely use Merom, the 'mobile' version of the Core 2 Duo. This means a slower front side bus, lower top-end speed, but lower power consumption as well. (The 2.33 GHz Merom only puts out 35 watts, where the 2.4 GHz Conroe puts out 65 watts. Other than that and the front side bus, there is no other difference between the two chips.)

The low end model appears to be the same as the previous education-only model, only with a Core 2 thrown in. While nice from a cost point of view, it does mean it has 'cut down' Intel graphics instead of even the stock ATI graphics.

The faster 17" model appears to be the exact guts as the previous generation model, with a Core 2 thrown in. It's the 20" and the new 24" models that are interesting.

The iMac isn't a headless mac, so it's not even in the equation. It would go in between the mini and Pro, and fall in the same price range as the iMacs. It's a different product category, might as well say they shouldn't have the iMac since there are already laptops in that price range.

It makes no sense for apple to ignore Conroe, it's intel's best bang for buck right now.

At this point I'm thinking that most updates of current machines will happen before tuesday, maybe the Showtime thing will be when they finally announce a midtower (probably pizza box form factor). Works as a settop box, or any mac can stream to the new Airport video.

Nonsense. I still think there's a good chance we see them before tuesday, if not, definitely in the next two weeks.
