Of course! This announcement doesn't have any effect on a MBP release (although the MB may not get the update yet).

And if they launched what most would consider a fantastic new imac with such little fanfare, I'm sure MBP's will receive the same sort of treatment. Maybe tomorrow, maybe next week. But this new iMac (did I say how fantastic it is) is a good sign we'll see C2D MBP's soon.:D

it would not surprise me at all to see MBP's announced in the next couple of days in the same way this was announced; press release + updated store.

that way the 12th can be "and before we get into itunes stuff, lets recap: look at all this new stuff....."

edit: yeah. what hecubus said!

Those are some really nice specs, I am sorry if this has been answered before but do we know what Core 2 Duo they are? Conroe or Merom

Merom.

Forgive me if this isn't new, but I just noticed that you can order the BT keyboard and mighty mouse as a package for $60 ($54 edu discount). Given that the BT MM alone is $69, this is a great deal.

Might need a 64-bit OS and chipset to use more than 3 GiB

Why not 4GB of RAM?
The system uses some of the 4 GiB of physical address space to map I/O busses and devices.

For example, that 256 MiB of VRAM on the graphics card appears in the physical address space -- which means that only 3.75 GiB is available for real memory. PCIe busses take more, as well as network and other needs. PCI Express reserves a lot of memory for I/O space.

A with a 32-bit chipset the OS has to "ignore" any real memory that's usurped by I/O space reserved addressing. A 64-bit chipset (with a 64-bit OS) doesn't have that problem.

I have a 4 GiB Dell D620, but Windows and Linux only see about 3.1 GiB of that due to the I/O space issues. I expect that OSX86 has the same restrictions - since it's a hardware issue.

IBM only offers 3 GiB configs of the same Yonah/Napa combination - apparently to avoid "where's the rest of my memory" complaints. It looks like Apple is copying IBM's approach.

The ProMac has a 64-bit capable chipset, so the memory extensions that were used for the PowerMac G5 can be used to avoid this issue.

The Napa chipset is 32-bit - Santa Rosa will be 64-bit.

Time to buy?

I am seriously thinking of getting out of Windowsworld and the new 24" iMac looks great!:D

From the listed specs this will really rock.

Anybody have advice on whether I should wait for Leopard to come out or not?

Those prices are a bargin. Nice to see a $CA1K model - even if the graphic card stinks - but not everyone needs a decent graphics card.

Makes the Mac Mini look really expensive, and weak...

Shouldn't the Conroe CPUs run at higher frequencies than the CPUs used in the iMacs?

Yup. PC's will be running faster, cheaper and slightly more powerful (per clock) chips.

So do we keep waiting for updated Macbooks and Macbook Pro's or not?

Yeah I'm wondering the same.

Every manufacturer and their mother has announced Core 2 Duo portables, and most of them consumer models too. Sheesh, I mean there are Core 2 Duo tablets, if they can do that, Apple can do bloody MacBooks.

The 1.83, 2.0, 2.16, and 2.33GHz clock speeds show that it is Merom, not Conroe. Conroe would be 1.86, 2.13 (2MB L2 cache), 2.40, 2.66 (4MB L2 cache), and 2.93 GHz (Core 2 Extreme)

Since the 24" model is at least prosumer, it would have been nice to see that one get a Conroe (Extreme even).

Low end iMac starts at $1549 here in Australia, no further details as the rest hasn't been updated.

The current top model mini is $1249 - looks a bit iffy considering the iMac is faster and has a decent screen as well, $300 doesn't buy a Core 2 Duo and a 17" widescreen, mind you, you lose the Superdrive, bluetooth and the remote...

A top end mini and a $300 LCD is probably better value but I have yet to see the price of the 17" dedicated graphics model.

I believe the GeForce 7600 GT is on par with the X1800 GT, faster in some cases, slower in others. It's a pretty good graphics card. I would just like to see the GeForce 7600 GT bump out the 7300 GT on Mac Pro.

Cheers.

So, the 7600 GT card should be a good gaming card.

I mean, I am still looking for a replacement of my dead gaming PC, and thought the Mac Pro too expensive (don't need all 4 Cores) for my Mac needs + PC gaming needs together.
But this 24" iMac, is en excellent computer for my combined needs! (I am sure, I am not the only one who wants the Mac for every day stuff, and a PC just for gaming....)

what to do...

ok i am confused, do i

a) buy a 32" lcd, hook up the mac mini to it, used it as a media centre, use my 360 on it, and have a wireless kbd/mse to it and use it as desktop. and get a macbook as my main machine

b) get a 24" wall mount it, use that as my desktop, keep the 360 downstiars and get a macbook

c) get the 17" with the superdrive and a mac mini, and not a 32" tv

aaaahhhh!!!!

/me goes crazy

Zim

hmmm why 3gigs of ram and not 4?

Do you think it will work with 2 2gig sticks and they just dont support it?

weird.

Cool!!

I ordered a 20" last night hoping they would update before they shipped it.Woke up this morning to see that big 24" model so I called Apple and canceled my yet to be built 20" and got the new one..

3 Gigs Ram!!

Better than 2 but I cant see why they cant do 4..

Why wait? It's perfect! You'll drive yourself crazy waiting. It's like staring at a sizzling steak in front of your face, but deciding not to eat it until April!

The End Of Core Solo • All Macs Have 2 Cores Minimum • Bravo $599 Entry 1.66 GHz

Besides, no more Intel Core Solo in Mac Mini.
$599 - $579 Academic (3.5% off) Big Whoop.
1.66GHz Intel Core Duo processor
2MB L2 Cache
667MHz Frontside Bus
512MB memory (667MHz DDR2 SDRAM)
60GB Serial ATA hard drive¹
Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
Built-in AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0
Apple Remote

Core 2 Duo will follow after their supply of Core 2 Duo can keep up with other model's needs first - my guess is by Thanksgiving. :) So that report of fulfillment of an order for a Core Solo with a Core Duo was not a screw up mistake on Apple's end. He was just the first to get one.

I Am Pretty Sure It Will Support Two 2GB Sticks For A Total Of 4GB

Yes. I think they just didn't want to scare buyers with an extra $1500 of their insane RAM prices.

Updated MBPs...

Here is what I suspect...

1) If no major case changes, a quiet introduction like today's iMac
2) If a major case and feature change, a "One More Thing"© next week...
3) Perhaps the reason for the delay in introduction is the Meroms are still constrained and Apple wanted them in the iMacs first.

Either way, I'm anticipating them to be introduced soon and I'll be in line as quickly as possible along with many here to buy one.

Just do it. Leopard will be a coupla hundred bucks when it comes (Spring), no biggie.

I assume you mean headless tower since all the iMacs and the MAC Mini are desktops......... Oh wait, isn't the MAC Pro a headless tower?

It's a workstation, not a desktop. Yes there is a difference.

Nice systems. Just hope we get Macbook/Pro and iPod updates soon! (Especially if they count as finally fixed rev. 'b' versions!)

It's nice to FINALLY see a decent GPU in an iMac (the Geforce 7600GT). I think this is the first time, though it's really overpriced if you're getting that model. Still, exciting updates for the iMac and Mac Mini!

Get one if you need it now.

Bottomline is, when Leopard comes out, there will a cheaper/better Mac. But that's just the way it is with technology.
