Well I couldn't resist...

I tried to fight the urge, really I did, but the temptation got the better of me. Ordered a new 24" iMac loaded to the gills last night. Scheduled to ship on 19th. After reading some posts in the gaming section, folks saying it plays WoW just fine. I figured Oh well, if something new comes out in a few months can give this to my 6 year old son ;)

a few days ago, ordered a new 24" imac

A few days ago, I ordered a new 24" iMac for my wife. It will be her first Apple computer, and its for her surprise birthday present and I am pretty excited about it. I also got her a new iPod to use as well (her first iPod as well too)!

Right now, I use a PB 15" that was the last in the PB line before Intel (this PB just happens to be my first Apple). So our household is almost finished with its transition from CRAP (otherwise known as DELL) to Apple. In a few years, I will look forward to a new Macbook Pro.

I'm looking forward to seeing the new iMac. I tried to see one in a Apple Store, but the two closest Apple stores did not have any 24" in store for display or for sale.

Got notice that the iPod should be arriving by Tuesday and the 24" iMac by Wednesday of next week. Should be two great presents to give.

During my lunch break here in Los Angeles about an hour ago, I stopped into the local Apple store on the mall in Century City. I got my first taste of the 24" iMac, and that is one fine computer you're getting there. The screen is nice and big--you don't really realize how large 24" is until it's staring you in the face. I watched The Fountain trailer on it fullscreen and in 720p. Whoa! It mighty nice. Congrats on your new computer. I say yours, because I think you're going to be fighting with your wife to spend time on it. :)

thought i would add saying i ordered my 20" iMac fully loaded today... can't wait for it to come!!!!!
would love a mac pro but $6,000 is expensive for what i need now...

Is it me or is the bottom of the compute ra lot higher off the desk than your 20". That seems odd. (unless it's a stability thing)

I'm guessing not.

Anyone have experience purchasing from Macmall? I don't mind any delay buying from Amazon, if there is any, so long as I get that discount/free shipping/no tax. :)

Macmall, however, is pretty much the same price- and, like Apple, I can get a printer for free (after rebate). Does anyone know if they add tax online (it would be shipping to New Jersey)? And what are they like?

from the HARDMAC website:
"Bootcamp is currently incompatible with the new iMac Core2Duo 24'', Thomas told us from Germany. This incompatibility can be related to that met by the MacPro owners who have tried to plug it to a 23'' display. During Windows' installation, the unsupported display remains desperately black.
For sure, Apple should solve this quickly... For sure? Well, maybe not indeed. People who have ordered a 24'' iMac last week just got an email warning them that delivery - which was to be completed within 5 days - would suffer a 3 weeks delay. The longer the better, they say..."

anybody have this problem yet?

Elliot--waiting for delivery on the imac24.

Headache??

I was visiting the iMac 24 inch at the apple store this weekend and noticed that it seemd to give me a headache staring at the screen (my wife had the same issue) Well long story short, I had already ordered a 24inch iMac online before this revelation (it shipped today.) Before I refuse the package at the door and ship it back (which I do not want to do) I wanna see if anyone who actually has one has any issues? Or could it just be the lighting at the apple store??

I found the same thing with my G5 iMac (Rev. B). It's because the screen is sooo bright! I just reduce the brightness and everything is fine. You may want to increase the brightness if watching movies, but for most stuff a reduced brightness is fine (and it saves your screen a bit too).

We just got the new 24" iMac in our home and it is working out great. The brightness takes some initial adjusting, atleast for my eyes. But after getting use to the immensity of the screen, i have no problems with it.

I had some initial reservations about the 24" before I purchased it online since I could not find a local Apple store that had one for display. But I am glad I got the bigger screen. Looks great, not very heavy, and fun to use. My wife is getting a kick out of new iMac. It's her first Apple and her birthday present, and she's really enjoying it compared to her old Dell Inspiron notebook.

just got my new 24 incher.
anyone else notice it running hot on the top rear of the unit?
also, discs come out very hot.
is it just mine or is this normal?

That happened on my G5 iMac too. Discs come out of my PowerBook very hot too.

I don't worry about it. The inside of the machine is warm, the disc is spinning at high speeds...

It sounds like you've had a good experience. Do you know if the display's brightness is adjustable? I've also been unable to find a 24" iMac on display in a shop but am seriously considering purchasing one. The only difference between us is that the iMac would be for me. My wife would get the iBook :D

Yes, screen brightness is adjustable via a control panel that can also be added to the menu bar.

Almost as fast?

Went down to the Apple Store and picked up a 20 in iMac, took them 40 minutes to put in another 1 GB of memory. They had no 500 GB disk so I settled for the 250, it was a Western Digital drive. Typing on the new machine now, almost as fast as my G5 Dual machine, now it has to last 3 or 4 years. Tested most of my applications and they all work just fine.

Hi Brian,

I'm close to buying a 20" iMac for the family (currently using a 5-year old Dell desktop); seems like a better buy than the 24", which is very nice. I was surprised by your comment that the new iMac was "almost a fast as [your] G5 Dual machine". Is the G5 the last generation before introduction of the Intel chips? Is it faster because you're running old applications that haven't been optimized yet for the Intel chips (i.e., running through Rosetta)?

Just surprised to hear that the new machine, even after recent chipset upgrade, is not as fast as the older one.

Thanks
Jay

PowerPC to Intel code? What is this alchemy? Running a PowerPC application via Rosetta is going to be slower then natively on a Power Mac G5 Quad.

Maybe I confused you? My other Machine is a G5 Dual 2.5 GHz Powermac. My benchmarks on that machine is 120. The Benchmark for my new 20 inch iMac is 127. The G5 I bought in 2004 September and it cost twice what the iMac cost, at the time the G5 was top of the line. I am very pleased with both computers.

Thanks!

I'm doing CSS Zen Garden styles (can you tell I'm a CSS-P Web Developer? :D) and having multiple stylesheets linking to one xHTML page - hey presto, different layout :)

I had a look earlier and thought it was very pretty too :)

This is somewhat OT, but how do you protect yourself when selling a Mac over Craigslist? I assume most deals are done face to face? I don't want to take what might be a bad check or forged money order, nor do I want someone to show up with a wad of cash, then have someone mug me as I leave. So how is the money handled?
Forget Cragslist got burned for $2699.00.
