Pudong is the new part of Shanghai, across the Huangpu river from the Bund (where they are fighting in the first scene of Empire of the Sun) "Dong" means East, and "Pu" means bank, but here it's just shorthand for the Huangpu river, which means Yellow Bank River. Pudong is where the Oriental Pearl Tower is located. To get there, you can take Shanghai's amazing subway, or for 3 dollars, you can take a cable car through a really bizarre underwater tunnel with weird psychedelic themed lightshows set to music like "Hades" which features red flashing bulbs and laughing demons. The airport is actually located about 20 miles east of the Pudong financial district, past rows of extremely bland high rise apartment buildings and through some smaller villages. There is no expressway to get there, so the trucks have to contend with everything from tractors to horse-drawn carriages. However, passengers can get to the airport by taking the maglev train which gets you there in about 3 minutes, during which you reach a top speed of 267 miles per hour.

My plan of attack is, come spring time (ie after leopard is released and the next rev of the MBP), is to sell my iMac and buy a mid-line MBP. Anyone interested in the iMac (check sig)?

the time has come!

Great news for anyone looking to pick up a 17" MBP C2D!!!

I just got a call from the apple store at the mall of america in bloomington, MN--
they said my MBP is finally in!!!

I also got a call from the store in Des Moines, IA saying that they had them come in today too!!!

So-- I'm guessing they're probably in all over the place. . .

I hope this is good news for all of you!!!

not sure what it is that we are watching, but I can assure you my new 17 surely DOES NOT make those types of noises.

News at 11

Today CompUSA figured out a very lovely way to ruin my Thanksgiving by distracting me via calling me on the phone today and telling me my brand spanking new 17" MBP C2D is in.

:D

It is sitting next to me right now and tempting me to fire it up without reading the manuals.

I will NOT give in...LOL

I completely documented the unpacking of it, along with taking pictures of it with some of it's new friends it has like the Wireless Bluetooth Mighty Mouse, the Miglia TVMini HD, and it's brand new BYTECC Cooler Pad that will keep it comfortable and safe, and other important things that make this a joyous celebration. :)

I will post the pictures of the unpacking ceremony later after I upload them to Photo Bucket.

NEWS AT ELEVEN

Ram

Hey all, I don't know where else to ask this...

I am happily typing this on my 15" C2D MBP that I've had for a few weeks. I'm a first-time Mac owner - and a very happy one!

I'm realizing though, that running the Adobe CS2 suite is sometimes a little slow with the 1 gig of RAM I have. Where is a good place to get RAM? I hear that Apple is way too pricey with their's.

Thanks!

The speed issue is probably because of the Rosetta emulation - CS2 isn't running in native mode on your processor. Adding memory probably won't do much to speed up CS2.

There seems to be a wikiality here that "Apple's RAM prices are too high". If you priced the cost of adding RAM when you made your order versus the cost of adding the stick yourself, I think you'd be surprised at the relatively small difference. But now that you already have your laptop - one good place is Crucial. I'm sure others will chime in with alternatives.

Actually Rosetta PPC emulation can use up quite a bit of RAM, so adding more will help. As for places to go, Crucial RAM is good stuff, but buying direct from Crucial isn't that great - rather expensive.

Take a look at www.newegg.com -- probably the favorite place for many to go these days. You're looking for DDR2 667MHz 200Pin SODIMM modules (PC2-5300 / PC2-5400) -- read the reviews, but I think you'll find that G.Skill, Crucial, Patriot, Corsair, etc.. all offer good products. You're looking at about $105 for a 1GB module.

Well, given that he's already got a gig - I will be really surprised if he sees any significant benefit to CS2 by adding more.

gonnabuyamac, next couple times CS2 is sluggish for you, try launching Activity Monitor to see how much free memory you've got and how much memory your various apps are using. Note that "inactive memory" will not be reported as free, but should be available to other apps as needed.

My intentions are not to hijack this thread any further than it already has been, but does older RAM seem to cost more than newer RAM? I have an '04 Powerbook G4 with 512 MB of RAM. I'd like to add another GB. Am I looking at the same price of updating a 17" MBP or am I looking at more/less?

I launched the Activity Monitor.

With basically nothing open except for a few widgets and the activity monitor, it says my system is using 600 MB of RAM... that can't be right can it? It says it has 402 MB free. could there be something wrong?
