It's tomay-toe. Anyone who says tomah-toe is blubbering fool.

Another demonstration of the dangers of elevating a regional dialect to the status of "language";) :D

...........and what, by the way, is: "blubbering fool"?

Now back to something a little more edifying on the subject of dual-duals: I'm planning on one to lay off my Logic fx to(mostly convolution reverbs) over ethernet. Anyone tried this using a G4 as the master yet?

Webster's Says.....

Double - adj. of two parts, layers etc., folded, twice as much or many, of two kinds

Dual - adj. twofold, of two, double, forming pair

Just my two cents, dual cents, double cents ;)

If they used the same RAM, I'd most likely have my current machine on EBay....since they don't, most likely, the quad is not in my future.

PCI solution

Hey I've been doin' a li'l bit of moaning about the demise of the old PCI in this update, it's even forced my hand to get a refurb dual 2.0ghz machine just so I can stick some UAD1 cards in there (I can't complain though, it is £400 cheaper than the dualcore 2.0 :) )

Just noticed this

http://www.mobl.com/expansion/products/pcie_expansion/6slot/index.html

Magma are about to offer a solution for legacy PCI cards, I think I can breath a little easier now knowing that what ever PCI cards I choose to get should be useable in my next update (even though that'll most likely be in at least 3 years)

Just a shame I couldn't afford a quad and one of those Magma expansion chassis :(

Just found this also for any pro tools users out there

I was in Amsterdam this weekend and stoped by the Apple Centre there, no new powermacs on display. They did have the new 15" and 17" powerbooks. At first I could not tell the extra resolution (I have a 1.5Ghz 15"), but it does looks nice. I am really bumbed that nothing happened with the 12". I really do love the size, but I cannot live with 1024x768 anymore.

Hi,

I went to the Apple retail store in London today (biggest retail store in Europe btw!!!). NONE of the new stuff was available!
NO dual-cores
NO new iMacs
NO aperture!

OK. I didn't quite expect Aperture, since it's introduced as a 'pre-order' on the web. But, to cycle to the store and not find ANY new hardware is just REALLY disappointing.
I was actually wonderin, who, in their right mind, would buy any of the computers there.... knowing that new hardware was introduced just a few days ago (if not weeks, for the new iMac) !?!?!?

I don't know a single company on this planet, which introduces new machines but doesn't ****ing sell them!

What a disappointment!

What ?? The dual-core Powermacs are old news already ?

I suppose now that iMacs, Powerbooks, and Powermacs are updated , the next rumored update is iBooks ?

I have a suspicion the next iBooks will be Intel, so perhaps not, as that won't be happening until 2006.

Can anyone say dual-core Xserves? ;)

dual-core dual-processor dual-X Xserves (dual Xeons, that is)

or double-core double-processor double-X

Oh no, not the whole double vs. dual debate again! ;) :D

Yes, perhaps we will see Xeons in the Xserve - interesting thought... definitely could work...

Personally, I think Apple will put the Xeon's successor in the first Intel-based XServes. My reason for thinking this is twofold:

1. Apple likes to surprise us
2. For various reasons I suspect the XServes will be the last to move to Intel CPUs, making the likelihood of this scenario happening higher.

For all of you keeping-up-with-the-joneses, photoshopperers, and general gamers then the Dual Dualcore 2.5GHz machines will be mind blowing. But for all you Pro Audio guys, like myself, who use Logic, Nuendo, Cubase etc etc etc, then the new Quad is a complete and utter waste of time and money for one reason:

PCI-E! There are no pci-e audio devices available, and when they do become available (if you can wait that long) the only difference between the pci and the pci-e version will be the actual connector!!, as audio devices do not require such high bandwidths as pci-e offers. So if you use a UAD, powercore, emu or in fact any audio device which requires pci you are f*&ked, that is of course unless you purchase a pci-e --> pci craddle which i've seen for around half the price of the Quad G5!!!

Roll on Vista/AMD ;-)

Don't get a Mac for games. get an Xbox 360, Gamecube, PS2, PSP, or buy a low priced PC with a big video card.

Or get a Mac. The right choice for YOU is not the right choice for everyone.

SOME gamers (like me) like to game with a mouse (first-person) and like a community of free online mods, maps, and demos. We also don't like having to be experts just keep our game machines patched and secure. Games are about fun, and maintaining Windows is not fun.

Yep, I'm one of those. I love playing games on my Mac, and don't need a PC to do so. I guess if I wanted to run Doom3 with everything turned on in a super high res, sure, but I'm not that picky or demanding. :p ;)

Just priced out a new G5: $17,882. Um, think I'll wait a little while longer. Or maybe I shouldn't have aimed for the moon.

At times, it helps to be realstic about things - do you really need the dual 30" displays, 16 GB of RAM, quad preocessing and 1 TB of storage? That may help lower your price. ;)

Ahh.. the old reverse logic! I bet they'll do what we doubt they'll do, just cuz we think they won't do it!

Ahah! Brilliant!

I thought it has already been stated that the I-family would go to Intel first. Consumer apps aren't nearly as intense, pricey and client/income based...

ibooks, imacs, the mac mini... these systems will go to intel first, giving the Pro's more time to ease into the change.

At least, that makes the most sense to me.

But then my ideas don't include the doucle-back switcharoo!

But if we should, by chance, use Firewire (Rosetta 800/ 2x i88x) it would not be a waste of time etc. Or, as I mentioned, use the G5 as an FX unit linked by Ethernet. Maybe a waste for you. Probably not for me.

Oh, and I've never used a "craddle". Are they good? :p

stole my thunder, i too was going to suggest firewire. and i'm sure we'll see some PCI-e audio cards soon.

Quad's shipping yet?

Anyone know if quad's started shipping? My date is still November 17, but I was hoping someone would have encouraging news :)

I haven't heard of the dates moving at all, so I think you'll just have to be patient. :)
