Thanks Larry OWC.

Very helpful info indeed...although now I regret buying my refurbished early 2011 17" 2.3 ghz quad-core. I have the 6g Mercury pro as my main drive and it screams. I had no idea a laptop could be so fast...

I think I'll wait a little while to see if Apple fixes the issue with another firmware update or when the 2012 MBP come out, whenever that may be. My laptop is *plenty* fast as it is.

For the record, my goal is to get a 2nd OWC 6g mercury pro in the MBP and make it a raid 0 to get 1 gb/sec read/write speeds.

Weird tone after firmware update but it turned out ok

Got a weird tone after installing the efi Firmware update (not the normal startup tone). Had to restart the iMac (mid 2011) with the power button, but all seems ok.

Never had the wi-fi problem, but installed that update too.

Must admit, after the last fiasco with 10.7.3 (finally installed it), I was a bit nervous...

Having Apple Care is a GOOD THING in these days IMHO!! :)

ALL IS WELL!

Weird, I got my iMac12,1 during November 2011 21.5 inch and I got this update, did not know mine was early 2011 iMac or maybe I am just confused thinking the iMac was updated not sure.

Oddly I've a late 2011 MacBook pro 13 running lion 10.7.3 and I don't have this showing up in software update if I try to add it manually says its not for my system.
Yet the description implies it is, my efi is b26 and this is b27 so I would have thought that this upgrade would have applies.
Any ideas why this isn't applicable to me

Do you have any issues with it, probably not and it's late 2011 so probably it's already fixed in that one.

only issue i believe it addresses that affects me.is the reconnecting to a network drive on re boot, its a bit hit and miss. not a huge problem
just seems the update addresses it.
though i can live with it and it doesnt cause any problems

It reboots, there is a tone, the progress bar goes across, then it appears to shut down for a few seconds then it reboots - you should have just left it rather than being impatient.

Mine will not install it - well, it does (apparently, everything goes according to plan) but the update is still available in SU after reboot. It reboots 4 times before actually taking me back to the login screen.

Mine's a 15" early 2011 one I've had since launch.

Current EFI Revision (post attempted update to the new one) - MBP81.0047.B24

Thanks for any help!

Update: Sorted! Simple solution too ;)

Thanks for any help!

I would try resetting the PRAM first and then trying again.

EDIT - N/A

I can't get it to install. Software Update says it's available, it installs, the computer reboots and does not do the usual firmware-update chime, and then Software Update tells me the update is available again. What can I do to get it installed?

If you're on a MacBook, make sure it's plugged into a power supply. I'm pretty certain that if you're installing a firmware update it will refuse to install it if it's on battery supply.

Reset PRAM and SMC then install.

I did this (at least I think I reset the SMC, it didn't seem to do anything one way or the other) and it didn't make a difference. The firmware update "installed" as fine but still shows up under Software Update.

I am, and I don't get an error. The firmware installation goes through as I'm used to, but when the computer reboots it doesn't do the weird chime or progress bar, and when OS X loads back up the update is still in Software Update.

Can those who installed the update post the below information from System Report. This is mine which I received a few weeks ago as a CTO 15":

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro8,2
Processor Name: Intel Core i7
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 16 GB
Boot ROM Version: MBP81.0047.B26
SMC Version (system): 1.69f3

I'm most interesting in the Boot ROM Version and SMC Version. Software update is not showing anything for me, and manually downloading/installing the update throws me with the "System Not Supported" message.

What the hell is going on with Apple and these problematic updates?

We just got the WiFi reconnect from sleep patch to fix the last update failure.

Now this latest firmware update will NOT install on my TOTALLY STOCK early 2011 MBP i7 MBP

It shows up in SU, runs through the cycle forever, tries to reboot several times (chimes and all), Trackpad frozen, manual restart after 5 minutes, firmware update still showing up in SU as not installed.

Note to Tim Cook - please take some of the $100 billion cash and hire some staff that does a better job on testing these updates prior to releasing them.

Update - now can not get internet connection after 3 attempted start-ups. Three other Macs in our operation all working fine WITHOUT this firmware.

it bricked my mid-2011 macbook air - local apple store is ordering a replacement motherboard :(

it was fine on my 2011 iMac though

It won't give you an error. It will restart like it is working, then just not install it. Try plugging in your MacBook just to be sure that's not the problem. And keep it plugged in throughout.

I just said I've done that already. Multiple times. In fact, I didn't even state that it was unplugged in the first place so I'm not sure why you would come to the conclusion that that was the problem.

I identified with you :D. I HATED the 10.7.3 update. And Lion overall to be exact.
And I had the same problem with the "tone" after this EFI update. Was repeting (trying to boot) several times... Around 6 times. But I wanted to wait and see what happens before panic. Last sound was louder and longer that the others. Was a BIIIIIP and finally booted.

Edit:
Oh, but after checking the updates still show up.

Sadly the EFI update has led to my July 2011 i7 iMac going back to Apple for repair.

It wouldn't boot after the update, 2 attempts at a time machine restore failed, recovery partition couldn't be found, internet recovery failed (all under the guidance of Applecare on the phone). All efforts ended up with either a spinning progress wheel or the restore/reinstall/browse/repair screeen.

The previous EFI update (last year) also caused it to need a time machine restore to get it working.

In essence I had no choice, both last year and on Saturday it did the update then took me to the utilitites screen offering restore/reinstall/browse/repair

I'll also be getting a new LCD panel as the blemish was immediately visible to the Genius when he powered it up.

Not particulary happy as you can imagine, expecially as the time for repair is '7-10 days'.

The machine has had no haxies, mods, nor bootcamp additions, it is a 'vanilla' machine as provided by Apple with no unusual software.
