All of the sudden, after this update, my spinning balls of death by doing seemingly simply stuff as navigating the net and accessing Gmail became glaringly fast on my MBP 13" March 2011 edition with the I7 core chip. I say Apple bring it on. To be honest before this update, when I got the laptop with Snow Leopard, I thought it was pretty stable as any new mac can be expected to be....but after installing Lion, it became quite glitchy. Which means, Lion at release was an half baked project which should have been released much later. So, screw you Apple for making like unbearable for a good 6-8 months.

I identified with you :D. I HATED the 10.7.3 update. And Lion overall to be exact.
And I had the same problem with the "tone" after this EFI update. Was repeting (trying to boot) several times... Around 6 times. But I wanted to wait and see what happens before panic. Last sound was louder and longer that the others. Was a BIIIIIP and finally booted.

The ONLY reason I did not panic was this time (my 3rd iMac) I bought Apple care this time). I was not impatient...I waited about 5 minutes before pushing the power button to get it to boot! WIERD goings on.

I am not so sure that it is the updates entirely. There seem to be MANY different iterations of the current crop of Mac computers...I wonder just what hardware they are putting out since some do not have any issues and some do! ???? :(

I am having problems as well with my late 2011 MBP. Software Update finds the update, it downloads and restarts, then I get the long beeeeeeeeep. While the screen is black, the light on the front of the machine comes on and off a few times, as if it's trying to start up. The 3rd or so time is does boot without issue, but the update is not applied (boot rom version is still MBP81.0047.B24 and the update is still available in Software Update).

I have a second ssd installed in the optical drive, could that be causing the problem?

This update killed my logic board too, but it may have been a coincidence. One the surface, there does seem to be more i7 chips affected than any other, but maybe that's just what is being reported.

Um, problem! Mine won't update. I just ran into this thread and mine won't update. It won't support my system or something.

Is Chrome a problem?

This is an "out of the box idea" but I found that after the update, I was having similar problems to the other posters. And one of the worst offenders was Firefox, or so I thought.

I started noticing an error message referring to a Chrome script when I was starting Firefox, even though I wasn't actively running Chrome, Chrome was installed but not running. I uninstalled Chrome and now my mini is running much better. No hangs when using Firefox, no system beachballs, etc.

I know this may be purely circumstantial but in my case, uninstalling Chrome seems to have made a major difference.

Firefox has an XUL implementation it refers to as chrome, which was probably what the error was talking about. Uninstalling Google Chrome likely played no part in anything and any improvement is placebo.

Thanks for the info. But I still find it interesting that uninstalling Chrome cleaned up the beachballs I was getting when starting Firefox. I'll take that placebo effect. :D

Should I Chance it?

I have a late 2011 macbook pro that came with 10.7, but I downgraded to 10.6.8 (10.7 had problems with Logic Pro, I can't stand autosave and there are a few other things - really i gave Lion a chance for 2 1/2 months and still wanted to go back). Anyway…

Despite the fact that this EFI update says it required OS X 10.7.3, it is showing up in my software update on 10.6.8. So I'm wondering if i should chance installing it.

Maybe apple just assumes that no one will have my model of macbook AND 10.6 and so doesn't check the OS version for this upgrade. Then if I install it and something goes awry, i'm in trouble (firmware problems get dicey on closed source hardware!).

Or maybe they do check the OS version and it is perfectly OK to install it on 10.6.8, they just don't mention it on the web page because it was not the default OS on any of the targeted machines.

Can anyone weigh in? Thanks!

I have a late 17" MBP downgraded (or upgraded :)) to 10.6.8 and applied the EFI update without problems.

I dropped my MacBook Air off at Willowbrook Houston Apple Store last sunday morning: they replaced the logic board and an i/o cable of some sort and I still had problems with it... so I got a new MacBook Air out of it.

Stay Classy, you know who you are :)

Same here. BTO system ordered in January, wonder if it has some firmware from the factory the updater doesn't recognize.
My system picked up the update today, along with the Time Machine fix. Looks like Apple silently fixed the installer to detect more recent MacBook Pros that left the factory with something newer, but not B27.

Yup, I wish Apple would note these changes on their downloads section. The updates still show the original release date and don't note that they've changed.

The only way to know is to use Software Update which picks up the change in the distribution file.

I just installed it, and my Mac scared the **** outta me! The iMac reboots, next thing you know at 3 AM in a house with 4 other people sleeping... "BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!" It was 5 seconds long. Loud, too. Then, I see the Apple appear, and the progress bar for the update. What in the name of Sweet Jesus happened!?!?!!?

Normal behavior since 1998 :)

My MBP would not update on the first attempt. I cleared the PRAM and then it went through fine. Faster boot, and better connection to my NAS. Happy day's.

My iMac and MBA updated fine on the first attempt.

What is pram? Sorry I am new to Mac

I don't see any difference but as long as it helps and fixes whoever this issue bugged i am happy :)

PRAM - Parameter RAM. Stores some system settings for OS X in hardware.

A crude (and inaccurate) PC equivalent would be the BIOS settings.

So we learnt something today. Don't do firmware updates at 3am unless you want 3 very tired and grumpy house mates hating you for being woken up.
