Indeed it is.. Now, how do I update my airport when its clearly showing as greyed out on my airport app?

File: Configure Other. Input IP address, it will open the preferences page of the AE/TC.
Delete your BTMM credentials. Update.
Allow the unit to restart and you should then be able to update to the fixed FM
Good luck.

Apple wouldn't release a press release to announce that they are discontinuing a product.

Actually, yes, they would make some sort of official announcement that a product will no longer be supported, particularly for something that has significant security implications, like a router.

As is evident, based on this update, this product that is still being manufactured and sold by Apple is also being supported with software and firmware updates.

We need a google/alexia/siri/apple TV/homekit Airport all in one device. That would consolidate a lot of tech in a really attractive box.

Just like the previous firmware, it gave me packet loss with BTMM turned on: about 6.5% to ping.xs4all.nl for example. So, I turned BTMM off again in the Airport (tower) and all is well again.

What other company still issues firmware updates after ceasing development of a product? You have to at least give them credit for that much.

Hope to see a router bundled into another product in the future.

Any company that still has products in the wild that aren't end of life. This means nothing either way, just that Apple isn't going to let their routers become security problems. I have no idea which way they're going but I wouldn't say this even points to anything.

The rumor going around Silicon Valley is that the former Airport team has been reassigned to a new division which is reportedly developing a frisbee with a built in camera that can also wirelessly charge the Apple Pencil.

I still wonder if they aren't planning to combine AirPort and AppleTV into one product.

Would certainly help further the HomeKit initiative.

You are on to something. Maybe they will create some kind of Mesh network with apple TV's like Sonos does. That would be wicked awesome.

Did you compare Eeros to Google WiFi? Both are Mesh Networks. Really hoping this is the direction Apple is going. Hoping for a competitor to Amazon Echo and Google Home as well.

I haven't tried Google's product. I decided to go with Eero because I heard good things about it on some podcasts I listen to. I've heard good things about the Eero support team, as well. I figured I probably wouldn't need to use their support (and I haven't as of yet); but it's good to know they're there if I hit a roadblock I can't solve.

great. my Time capsule is not showing in airport utility even after I power cycle it. how exactly do I upgrade it then to fix this bug?

That wouldn't make sense for areas in the home where the television is no where near the internet gateway.
It could be though. If Apple moved to making mesh networking products, which they could easily dominate and keep their margins.

An AppleTV-Amazon Echo Competitor-mesh node combination would make a great product.

Wouldn't really like that. a) the TV is not necessarily the place where I want to put my airport and b) I have 4 airports in my house (a friend of mine many more) and I don't need an Apple TV in my garage or in the cupboard where I'm currently extending my network.

But a nice mesh wifi with it's own backbone to extend would be nice. And just make the apple TV an option to add...

No, no we don't.

Your internet connection (cable/DSL/etc.) is not always near your TV. The best place to put a Wifi base station is not always where your TV is either.

I personally despise those voice command things, but if you use them, they should generally be standalone, inexpensive devices so you can put a few around the house in the areas you spend most of your time.

Combining them into one device makes things a lot less convenient unless you live in a small studio apartment.

The rumor sites are all sticking to their "AirPort routers are being discontinued" claims, even though Apple has made no statement, the devices are still in stock, on shelves and available online (some sites reported they were gone from stores, obviously without checking) and now this update comes out, the second one this year. It's very odd.

It’s called fake news my friend. Repeat a lie or rumor enough times and it becomes fact. Then when the truth comes out there’s a mad rush to explain the reasons for the fake news and how the fake news was really true and how Apple changed its mind after consumer outrage. Then you go right back to trashing the products mentioned in the original fake news. That’s how Apple bloggers and websites operate.

The update is flagged on ALL Airport devices. Bothe the older (flat) extremes and the newer (tower, current) ones. And also for both old and new Airport Express units.

I’m still bummed that Apple has abandoned any further development of their wireless routers. Just as they have done with so many other useful products too. At least we know they are “all in” with emojis and phones though. <sigh>

I switched to eero, but kept the time capsule for backups. so although I will update it, this was no longer an issue. Unless Apple upgrades to a better mesh technology like eero, even if the rumor of its demise is not true, i don't see it worth buying anymore.

Thanks. Tried that on all of my devices. No dice.

I had 5 AEBS's that would not respond to Airport Utility under either MacOS or iOS. On all 5 I had to do a hard factory reset by holding in the reset button on the back of the AEBS until it showed the fast blinking orange light indicating a reset. After that, I could select the AEBS, set up my network WITHOUT enabling Back to My Mac. Once the network was set up, I installed the 7.7.8 update. Once that was completed on my primary router, then I reset my extended network routers which then showed up in Airport Utility and followed suit until my network was re-established.

It's a bit of a hassle, but everything is back to running 100%.

Anonymously-sourced reporting over at appleinsider adds two important things to this story. First, their sources wouldn't specifically confirm the (previously reported) dissolution of the AirPort division at Apple. Some people have been reassigned, they say, but that alone doesn't necessarily signal a shut-down of the product team. (Something I've said all along...) Second, they've indicated that regardless of that, the software/firmware support for the devices will continue. That's a critical piece of information. You can still buy and use the things, and Apple will continue to issue security and other updates.

In other words: Don't panic. Nothing really to see here until Apple actually says or does something new on networking products.

You offered these links in response to the question, "When did Apple officially announce this? This is not a true statement."

Of course none of those links lead to Apple officially announcing anything; just anonymous sources and a whole steaming pile of speculation. The answer to the question is: Never. Apple has not announced an abandonment of the AirPort product line.

Thanks! I'll give this a try.

I've said it before and ill say it again:

the current airport routers are "good enough" for 95% of home situations. there is little to improve upon the design and no need to pay engineers to sit around all day.

when the next wifi standard gets released the slap a team together and design new routers.
