That wouldn't make sense for areas in the home where the television is no where near the internet gateway.
Not to be THAT guy, but that's a narrow view of why to design a product. Besides, between SAT boxes needing a phone line ("needing") and cable internet I'm pretty sure that many/most have access avail near a planned spot. YMMV

Is the Airport really being discontinued? Apple is definitely still selling them, and they haven't made an official announcement, just some third party news that some people were laid off.

It could just be restructuring, hopefully? Maybe I'm overly hopeful, but it just seems odd that Apple is still selling, with plenty of stock available, these products if they don't want to anymore.

When did Apple officially announce this? This is not a true statement.

thats strange, i didn't see that press release from Apple confirming this rumor. yet it's stated as fact. how odd.

As others have said, just because rumours claim something does not = truth.

It's pretty 2016 of MacRumors to make a statement of certainty without any official proof.

Until an Apple spokesperson confirms it, AirPort is not discontinued.

My apologies, guys. I have updated the post to make it more clear that the information is based on a rumor and has not yet been confirmed by Apple. I didn't mean to cause confusion.

I snagged a three pack of Eeros on sale on Amazon after hearing the news that Apple reassigned the AirPort engineers. Only had the Eeros running for a few days; but so far, I'm seeing vastly improved throughout compared to my previous two AirPort Extreme (the tower model) setup.

The AirPorts rarely managed to give me more than 40 Mbps up and down unless I was near the primary AirPort. With the Eeros, I'm getting between 100-200 Mbps up and down throughout my house. This is connected to gigabit fiber. Obviously nowhere near as fast over Wi-Fi as it would be if everything was connected with Cat 6, but that's to be expected. Unless Eero really screws something up, I have to say that I'm liking what I've seen so far.
Did you compare Eeros to Google WiFi? Both are Mesh Networks. Really hoping this is the direction Apple is going. Hoping for a competitor to Amazon Echo and Google Home as well.

Unless you make an Apple TV Stick w/ Bluetooth and wifi that allows you to plug into HDMI and then control it via a 4gen remote or the iPhone App.

You could put the 64 GB of flash memory into the Airport (it already has a generally unknown Bluetooth capability - nobody ever sees the blue light) still package a hard drive for Time Capsule variants. It would save an HDMI cable and if combined with mesh networking would offer robust whole house coverage.

This would be my roadmap to get ATV into every room at a significant savings with even better performance.
[doublepost=1482281904][/doublepost]I have a 5Gen TC and an ac Express.

Took me toggling into and cancelling the app about 5 times before the updates showed. (Also noticed at that time that the "Previous Versions" Button had disappeared. It reappeared after the "Download & Install" Button showed up.)

Now installing via the App on my 6s.

Express updated easily, but the install failed like 4-5 times on the TC each time seeming to get a little further in the install sequence. Finally after 5th D&I button press it popped into the install bar. Something isn't smooth here.

Not exactly sure what the signs are, but has anybody noticed any "pre-Apple-acquisition" moves by eero?
Seems like a perfect fit at exactly the right time. And eero can't be too expensive as an acquisition.
Can they?

How does one do a firmware update?
search and launch airport utility / chick on your device in airport utility / click update. When complete your airport will reboot. You can reboot your Mac and any other apple devices and confirm that you are connected to the network of choice.

This is news to me... Really?

The rumor sites are all sticking to their "AirPort routers are being discontinued" claims, even though Apple has made no statement, the devices are still in stock, on shelves and available online (some sites reported they were gone from stores, obviously without checking) and now this update comes out, the second one this year. It's very odd.

That's just a report from Bloomberg. It's not an Apple press release.

Apple has said nothing about this. They are still selling the products and there is plenty of stock.

I don't completely trust the rumor because the Airport and Time Capsule are a big part of the ecosystem. Believe me, I'll eat my hat if they announce it tomorrow, but I think any discontinuance of the products is a while off if at all.

Wasn't the rumor about there being no further development?

Quite a bit different than being no longer manufacturered and being discontinued.

You've probably explained in one sentence why they have said nothing about this. They have plenty of stock they'd quite like to shift for a nice profit. :) Probably when they have sold off most of their stock, they'll disappear from the online store and Apple will say something along the lines of there are many good third-party options available for customers to buy.

What other company still issues firmware updates after ceasing development of a product? You have to at least give them credit for that much.

Everybody. All enterprise hardware and software has a well defined end of sale and support period. Apple sucks with their support policy.

Windows XP was supported 8 years after Vista came out.
Windows 10 is guaranteed 10 years of support after release.
Windows Phone 8.1 released 6/2014, supported until 7/2017
Cisco guarantees 6 months prior notice for end of sale, 5 years hardware and firmware support from that date.
Dell hardware and software support available for 5 years after delivery.

Hope to see a router bundled into another product in the future.

It's still in production. When they stop production and sales, we can credit them with any updates in my opinion

Well this is great software news! My 2nd gen Extreme is still going strong :) Also I picked up a new Express on Black Friday (sale) to extend my network [wired Bridge mode] for 4K Roku streaming. All is good; never ever have to reboot the sucker. <the update didn't show up yet for me either>

Bought the 2nd gen the 1st week it was available, and have never had any moderate issues. 1 Apple update made it wonky for a little bit, but I wiped, and restored it as new and it has worked well ever since. Admittedly, I live in a small apt. but I have 30+ different networks all around me. Oh, I remember the days of no one having the 5.8 ghz band, it was so quaint back then!

what kind of settings did they remove this time? long time ago mobile me did not have problem to connect to computers. Now it sucks as hell. Airport features and settings are gone, Almost like they want idiots to be able to operate it. I will never buy Airport of similar devices ever again. Home kit sucks too. Oh boy I'm a little angry man.

Apple wouldn't release a press release to announce that they are discontinuing a product.

Agreed, unlikely.
However, Apple do usually confirm through various 'unofficial' channels. To be fair, I don't recall reading that they've denied the report is true either…

If you buy a car for example, the manufacturer has to be able to supply spare parts for repairs for many years.

I'm glad this fix came out. A few weeks ago, we were experiencing this issue where we were unable to see any disk shares on the time capsule. Rebooting the TC does fix it for a little while before the problem returns. Not sure if this was a related problem or not, but the Sonos app didn't work well either. It would take a long time for the Sonos controller to discover the speakers on the network.

I just applied the patch this morning and things appear to be working now, especially the Sonos app coming up quickly, as it did before. I did not realize the back to my mac config was the problem. Will remember that the next time.
