NVChannel(GL): Graphics channel timeout! still with me.

I can reproduce this crash in 10-15 minutes, its easy, just play a little bit with panels ind photoshop or illustrator (CS3) and tah-dah it’s there.

Ok, i have to admit, that after the efi update my MBP (2.2 santa rosa) now runs smoother, but this really sucks. Looks like i have the last instance, reinstal system and do not apply leopard graphic update like everybody else.

Is this happening with an external monitor attached only? In that case i would maybe wait onto the 10.5.3 update.

Did you send a bug report to Apple about that? You can even send e-mail to Steve Jobs. But I'm not sure of the email address. Is it stevejobs@apple.com? Maybe someone here can correct me on that.

Hugh

which issue? is it the external monitor not supporting full resolutions?

because i have that problem, and for the first time i really f***ing hate apple because of it. I have Macbook Pro 2.2 SR

Just downloaded the firmware updater and it says my system doesn't need the update. So some people are getting this major bug fixed while others (like me) have to keep f***ing living with it?!?!

I'm actually considering it. Never done that before. I'd also use much better language than what you quoted from me, since it's been a day and my mood has tempered since then :)

sjobs@apple.com

It isn't really Steve's email address, but it is monitored (although not necessarily answered).

No issues applying the update & some problems I was having after 10.5.2 & Leopard Graphics update seem to be fixed. :D

Text Shearing in Safari on battery and Airport
White blocks in some Safari videos when scrolling.
White Blocks in iPhoto when scrolling through event photos
Occasional black screen when wake up issues haven't happened.

The lighted key board seems to work more consistently/better.

15" MBP 2.4 from 10/07 - All updates applied.

Need Help: Power failure during EFI upgrade

Hey guys,
I just did the upgrade and there was a brief power failure when the progress bar was in the middle. Now the thing just beeps when turned on and won't boot at all. Any advice?

It beeps "SOS" in morse code (3 short, 3 long, 3 short). Help!

EDIT: Using the Apple EFI Resoration CD 1.1.6 right now. Seems to work. But the manual is a little wrong, when you hold the power button when powering up, it won't work. Just power on, insert CD.

Update: Restoration successful. Updating EFI right now. Seems to work fine.

The funny thing is that..

.. many of the problems I read here is problem I have had with my 1st gen. Macbook Pro and which now has been fixed.

For example the one with screen not comping on after waiking up from sleep, and the one with battery draining whilw apparantly asleep in your backpack.

All these has been fixed for me after installing leopard and the lastest update in january 2008.

Seems like it's not as easy being a mac customer these days. Gone are the days where a mac was a mac. Now it's more like a pc where diferent configurations gives different problems, even within seemingly similar hardware..

Glad I am blessed with a stable intel iMac (1.gen also) and Macbook Pro running Leopard with absolutely no issues..

Nope. That would give significantly lower benchmark results, and my 2.4 24" iMac gives very similar results post EFI update as before.

I would suggest that your system is showing the symptoms it is because it has a fault. The solution to that isn't to revert to earlier EFI firmware, but have the system checked. Since it's a 'late 2007' iMac, you are still under warranty.

No, sorry. If the idle speedstep clock is lowered, it wouldn't cause a decrease of performance while heavy cpu operations, but it would cause a performance degradation in desktop gui. Before the desktop was very fluently, now it stutters. You can see it if you resize for example the Mail-window, or a finder window.

The update decreased the desktop gui performance.

what version of the wired keyboard does it update too?

after the update my keyboard is 0.69. I am not sure if things went wrong because I updated my wireless keyboard as well. The wireless version nows feel faster but the wired one has same typing speed

So I really want to downgrade to the last EFI firmware for my iMac. There were no problems, the performance was decent. It's so annoying there does not seem to be a way to downgrade again.

Maybe if I corrupted the firmware, I could recover the old version with the restoration cd 1.6 then? Or would it only work with a new restoration cd including this lame efi 1.3 firmware?

I mean I bought this expensive machine to have a good desktop work performance. It's really a shame.

I works for me, The only difference is that this a slight delay in start-up when i turn on my Macbook and it takes a second to hear the Mac sound. But, loading into my desktop now has exceeded and is faster than before i updated the firmware. So, im guessing that the firmware worked for me:D

External Monitors

did your MBP have any issues with external monitors? Such as having it not display it's max resolution when you reboot, and not even showing that resolution as a choice in the display preferences?

If reinstalling fixed that, i may have to take that advice....

I personally haven't tried that so I wouldn't know. If you want to avoid a reinstallation, try booting from an external drive and seeing what happens. If you have another computer, you may be able to do it in target mode.

I would do that and send mail to Steve's email like RaceTripper says it's sjobs@apple.com. Even if it's not really is e-mail address it wouldn't hurt. :D

Hugh

Thanks for the correction RaceTripper. :D

I found my fan running wildly. I tracked the problem to Stickies taking up 95% CPU. Turned out one Sticky was behaving weirdly and when I deleted it the fans died down.

Odd.

Fixed!

Great. i have SR 2.4 MBP and issues with external display after start and weaking internal display from sleep are gone! Hurray!

Was it connected when you did the firmware update? Did you try to restore/erase the HDD in the iPod after?

It was connected at the time. Tried Disk Utility, iPod Restore, DiskWarrior, Tech Tool Pro and even spent several hours in Terminal trying to reformat it, but it didn't want to play!

Isn't there a utility for the iPod. I think was called PodLock, but I'm sure it's only for the old iPods. :/

I'm always excited to download updates although I am feeling a little bit of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Can anyone report on post-update Safari snappiness? ;):p

I'm with you in this one. I received the firmware update for my 24" Alu iMac but I'm too afraid to download/install it. My mac has been running great ever since I bought it and I don't want to screw anything up.

Update worked fine. I do find when doing nothing the fans on my MBP will go to 3.5k RPM and smcFanControl measures 60°C. It also will not go above 90°, when it hits 70°C the fans are at full 6k RPM and the temp never goes above 72-74°C.

About time. My MBP SR has been kernel panicking so much that I can't get my work done. now it's fixed.

Thank you Apple. And shame on you, too, for releasing an unfinished 3500usd product.

But I still have problems trying to wake from deep sleep.argh.

Our MBP (3,1) also had some issues and Apple Store recommended a reinstallation of the OS. Not sure why, but it fixed everything. Apple Store actually started the process, and they did a 10.4.11 install with 10.5 upgrade and then to 10.5.2 using software update. I personally would have gone staight to the new 10.5 installation and software update, but what they did worked.

were you having wake from sleep issues? And, was it the re-install or the firmware update that fixed the issues you were having? I've tried the brightness button - no dice. Just check the thread "Macbook pro won't wake from sleep" I have several posts on there - and there are tonnes of people having the issue. Seems to be some problem with the graphics card not sending signal to the correct monitor - several people have problems with external monitors that seem to stem from the same cause. Most agree that the problem surfaced after the Leopard Graphics update. I have reverted to Tiger - and don't have any gremlins or problems anymore. I'm waiting for 5.3 to come out and hopefully some evidence that it fixes the sleep/wake issue, as well as improves airport connectivity. I often have to tell it to connect to my home network, though it always connects up at work no problem.

iMac - can it use a PC keyboard?

I don't like the Apple keybaords - they are too flat for me. Can the iMac accept a pc keyboard?
