tvOS betas are not as easy to install as beta updates for iOS and OS X. The update will require the Apple TV to be connected to a computer with a USB-C to USB-A cable, with the software downloaded and installed via iTunes.

The apple tv is the one with the USB C port. He'd need to buy a USB C to USB C cable. It is a shame that I don't have a computer with USB-C capability lying around and not going to buy one just for this.
There fixed it for you.
Actually, I think that this can't be true. Surley any USB connection (USB-3 preferred) should be able to do this update.
I'd rather a third party developer create one. It's time to add the missing podcasts.app to tvOS9.
Certainly if someone had the 2015 MacBook, the USB-C to USB-C would be just fine. Right?
Not sure why they didn't just begin at version 1.0, like WatchOS.

I think it's only required to be done through a computer because it's a beta. I can't imagine that the final 9.1 update would need it.With an update so soon, it sounds like they'll be releasing updates on a schedule similar to iOS (and starting with 9.0 would further this speculation). That's a great sign! And I'm sure one of the the updates – perhaps tvOS 10 – will include direct updates instead of requiring it to be done through a computer.
Yea, at like 18-24 fps. This update will bring 4K, right?
Yea, at like 18-24 fps.
It's already been established that this model and iTunes content are not ready for 4K this year. Patience is vital
Thanks, I am hoping for more returns - I will pick up a refurb at $99Just return my Apple TV yesterday, this is going to be a long process. Updates and updates maybe my January 2016 they we'll get their act together. I will keep using the old box. And the Roku 4 4K looks amazing specialy if you own a 4K tv.
release notes for the update include references to networking and scrolling tweaks...
amen to that. I was really quite surprised at how raw tvOS is. Based on the rumors I thought that they had all the hardware and software nailed months ago and were delaying the release because they were trying to get the deals with various content providers. but the software side is anything but polished atm. Hope they improve on it rapidly. No reason why they can't. There are a ton of things which are pretty clearly doable.I'm glad to see they are already sending out betas of tvOS. The device definitely needs some polishing so hopefully apple will be updating it frequently.
Yea, but I thought that since this was such a significant overhaul to deserve its own OS name, Apple would just start from version 1.

Most people's assumptions have been that engineering was forced to meet a marketing deadline. But Jason Snell tweeted that rumors are TV had been finished for quite a while. A little shocking then that it came out so rough around the edges.amen to that. I was really quite surprised at how raw tvOS is. BTW, Siri API is not in this beta yet, right? Can't wait till they release it. The hooks are clearly there. when I ask siri while watching a movie in Plex "who is in this movie" the response is "the current app hasn't supplied me with this information". This suggest that in principle it should be able to answer such questions once Siri API is made available to 3rd party developers.
I don't necessarily disagree, but it's not as if you're investing in a proprietary format, it's just a matter of time before everything is USB-C.
