Schiller told Gruber that they are moving to yearly updates like iOS, so I would not be surprised.
.

iOS updates are free though. I wonder if Lion updates will be too! Buy a mac and get lifetime updates (provided the system can handle it); just like when you buy an idevice, you get lifetime updates to iOS (provided the device can handle it).

I do hope that is the new model coming in with the yearly updates. It makes much more sense to just factor in the price of the software and updates into the purchase price of the device rather than every year feeling like you are being nickeled and dimed.

I would rather them really polish Lion than to release some "new" OS.

I would not call ML as a new OS. Its like polished Lion IMHO. The look will be the same, many of the functionality will be just the same - FileVault 2, iCloud - extended of course...

I think I'll just be skipping OSX releases from here on in. I'm happy with Snow Leopard. Will just wait till Mountain Lion comes out.

Well unexpected but not surprised. This is the perfect way to force SL to move on; because if we don't we will be left so behind on integration.

Just pray that half the **** works-

Note to self: this tells me late summer release for MBA.

Are Apple seriously saying that one of the top new features is a Notes App? Something that has been built into Mail and syncable to .Mac/MobileMe/iCloud since 10.4 (I think) and the only difference being now that its a standalone App?

I like it. less clutter in my mailbox

1.) Full screen mode on multiple screens
2.) A non disappearing cursor
3.) Save As
4.) Non crashing Textedit
5.) Reverted scrolling

SO the mission control is the same like in Lion? I would expected some way of swich from Mission Control to Old expose...:(

U meant to say MBP in MBA desing? :) Well, unless it wont be as stable as SL, I m not switching, LIon is a mess, even in 10.7.3, and I would really love to see old Expose back on.

I completely disagree. Notebooks, desktops and servers are different beasts than mobile gadgets and those devices use completely different interaction models for good reasons. My computers do not have a touch interface nor do they have an on screen keyboard. They also have much larger screens and perform completely different tasks than a mobile gadget. Trying to force the same user interface onto them not only does not make any sense, it's counter-productive and simply idiotic to even think about it. That's why Unity for Ubuntu Desktop Linux is a stupid idea and why people already hate Windows 8's Metro interface. The developers should leave the tablet interfaces on tablets. That's where they make sense. On a regular computer, no.

So you think desktop integration with mobile devices is a step backwards? And that user interfaces which greatly speed up work and reduce errors are a bad thing?

Also I think you are forgetting that these are not mobile interfaces on a desktop, they were redesigned for a desktop. I guarantee if these features came out on Mac OS first there wouldn't be nearly the amount of complainers.

I don't get why people are against having the best of both worlds.

Where is this noted? I haven't taken a look yet, but I am sure there will be APIs and be restricted to signed apps.

From Gruber's preview:

I’m interested to see how developer support for Mac App Store-only features plays out. Two big ones: iCloud document storage and Notification Center. Both of these are slated only for third-party apps from the Mac App Store. Many developers, though, have been maintaining non-Mac App Store versions of their apps. If this continues, such apps are going to lose feature parity between the App Store and non-App Store versions.

Airplay Mirroring = Killer Feature

For all of us who watch Hulu on our laptop and don't want to have to pay for Hulu Plus just to watch on our TV or iPad, Airplay Mirroring is reason enough to buy the new OS! :)

Wow. Lion isn't even stable yet.

Let's guess, if I want to solve the problem of Lion not working I need to buy this.

I keep hearing how Lion is full of bugs. Haven't restarted (minus for updates) or had any crashes in since getting Lion at launch.

This isn't a "new" O/S . There's a reason it's called "Mountain" Lion.

Like another poster said it's like a service pack for Lion.

Like Snow Leopard was only a service pack to Leopard ?

The name doesn't mean anything, it's all about the major.minor versioning.

Sad really

As a long time Mac user and Apple supporter this really makes me sad. Clearly Apple has discovered that the content distribution business model is the most profitable business to be in. Instead of creating your own stuff you just take a cut for delivering someone else's, very small overheads.

So Apple are now doing their upmost to shift everyone on to the App store so that they can take a cut of every app sold, just like the game consoles. While Gatekeeper might have some merit in having apps signed it really disturbs me that with every new release of OSX I loose more control over my computer.

Apple can revoke the certificate at any time rendering the apps signed by that certificate unusable. I don't want to give that kind of power to someone else. Just imagine for example I buy some neat software from a developer for $500 but then that company gets bought out by another who decides to use the name to distribute something apple objects to. So Apple pull the certificate and the $500 software I was happily using suddenly stops functioning.

Don't think for one minute that the run anything option is going to stay, it is only there now to give developers time to updates their software to signed versions before the option is pulled.

Sorry if this has been answered in the thread already, I haven't had time to read through it.

Apart from the new features, has there been any word of whether 10.8 will address some of the glaring deficiencies of 10.7? Eg. removing auto-save, allowing the option to use old-style Expose etc.?

Something called Gatekeeper, and promoting it as a security feature. And all this time I've been told countless times that it's impossible for Macs to get viruses.
This is nothing more than a sneaky way to push the App Store. They know the average user wont even find the setting to disable this and then in iOS X 10.9 Cougar, you can't disable it.
This is what I truly fear. I don't mean to sound like those people in these threads who scream about how Apple is evil, but I see the exact scenario above playing out. All of the sudden in the next upgrade the option will have been silently removed.

The funny thing is that on iOS, this option would be awesome. I hope that Gatekeeper is allowed into iOS 6.
