Yeah, I think it's just decades of conditioning. There have been portrait photos since the late 19th century. Portrait video, meanwhile, is a phenomenon less than a decade old.

I'm not denying that portrait video looks… weird. It does. I'm just not a great fan to the snobbish reaction.

I must say I can understand the reaction somewhat since quite a few displays for computers and TVs are in landscape and it's difficult to turn them 90 degrees while a phone it is relatively simple to turn the phone around according to the video presently viewed.

Another thing that I think goes against the idea that we're simply not used to portrait video and that's why it's considered weird is that I don't remember anyone complaining that it looked weird when TVs went from 4:3 aspect ratio to "widescreen" (16:9). I think the vast majority agreed that it looked better. But then again maybe that's because we have seen the wider aspect ratio at the cinemas? :)

However, I still think a movie is one thing (more or less never OK as portrait) and a photo another (OK with whatever aspect ratio used as long is it "works" for the photo).

Yup. It's another one of those "we are used to do it this way so it is wrong if you do it that way." However, reality is saying otherwise, as the younger generation growing up with smartphones don't seem to mind with vertical videos. IGTV, and the rise of TikTok, etc shows that portrait viewing is now more commonplace due to smartphones. And a smart content creator would see this as an opportunity instead of yelling "get off my lawn" to the trend.

The traditional 16:9 widescreen is being disrupted as well with even wider aspect ratio of 19:9 and 20:1 due to the trend of edge to edge phones with taller aspect ratio. Some youtubers are already migrating to this wider formats, resulting in black bars if you view them on traditional 16:9 screen.

Would I want to see a full length movie vertically, probably not. However, short consumptions like news and short entertainment, why not?

I can't really agree. I think it's one thing that shorter videos of certain kinda (such as one person speaking in a video call) are recorded as portrait using a smartphone and then watched on a smartphone in portrait mode, but as soon as you get to a screen that can’t view portrait mode it many times becomes annoying. I don’t thinks the black bars seen on a widescreen showing a movie of even wider aspect ratio is comparable – they both have more width than hight whereas a portrait video has a lot more height than width.

Compare to the 4:3 aspect ratio vs 16:9 – for most purposes I don’t think anyone prefers going back to 4:3. Same thing with portrait video – in general landscape is prefered.

Or perhaps we should try shooting and showing videos in a triangle or oval – it’s all about getting used to it, right? ;)

I have an iPhone 8 Plus, and portrait mode has been working fine and I have not installed this update. I just got done an amazing round of prom photos, showing off the blurred background in Portrait mode in the amazing looking shots. So I'm puzzled about whether this update only affects SOME iPhone 8 Plus phones or perhaps only affects OTHER Portrait features, like Stage Light, which I haven't used lately...
