You're right, you'd never see it. That would mean that most every other streaming service, cable networks and movie studios would go out of business as Apple offered all the movies and most of the TV shows for $9.99 per month.

Well yea, I was saying $9.99 just for Apple+. What I was describing, maybe $49.99 would do it? Either way, yea it’s unlikely to happen for a while.

forcing Apple to compete with similar apps at the same price point without the Apple 30% cut.
No, Apple’s benefit is and will be a more secure marketplace. Having a phone NOT riddled with tons of malware is worth an upcharge for me.

Everyone, just remember, if you build something so great that a big minority (way more people use Android) of people want to use it, someone will call you a monopoly because they just don’t understand why the word means OR don’t know how to use the word effectively. Just because I have a monopoly on MY BUTT, doesn’t give you the right to sue to blow smoke up it, there’s lots of other butts out there.

The TV app is hit and miss affair, its buggy and not reliable. I'm not in the USA, so does this update help any of that? Or is it just about content and layout? The article should be addressing these things.

Makes sense. It all feels a bit messy to me right now, so I hope that they can offer quality in a simple package for $9.99 per month. I was really hoping for all iTunes movies and shows, plus original content for an all in fee. I doubt I'll ever see it though.

iTunes video really does feel like it’s still an outsider waiting to join the party. I stopped buying movies and TV shows when AppleMusic came around because I thought Apple would do the same with TV/Movies.

I can’t see how giving away Tv shows and movies for such a low monthly price will remain profitable but maybe if one considers that most people will rent just one or two movies per month, or none at all, a $9.99 all you can watch package might increase that spending per person and justify it to studios.

So if you’re not a cord cutter content doesn’t show up in the TV app? Does it boot you out to individual apps then?

If you subscribe to cable, then your experience remains the same as before. You can log into tvOS apps that are included in your cable package and the TV app aggregates your favourite shows jumping into those apps.

AppleTV Channels inside the TV app are for those who want to subscribe to channels a la carte and not go through your cable provider.

Something like that, no way for $9.99. Maybe $49.99 though. I know I would. If they can do it with Apple Music, maybe there’s a chance one day.

Not impressed, Apple. Why is the TV app menu bar blurry? I thought the app goes straight to the video, so why am I getting splash screens for the other apps? And I go back to the video’s app instead of the tv app. Bro...

Apple always adds bug fixes etc... the problem is they SUCK at release notes. The should have detailed release notes with bug ID and fixed etc... no different that other companies like Cisco, etc
Why bother doing full disclosure when all they need is to write “this release include bug fixes and improvements” and call it a day? Facebook app, Twitter app, Microsoft word/excel/PowerPoint and many others don’t bother release notes either.

I still don’t get the point of the TV app.

Have you actually tried it? It’s not just for content and subscriptions that you buy. It collects everything from all of your installed apps in one place. Why is this important?

It lets you find a show quickly instead of spending 15 minutes browsing through a dozen different apps.

It also lets you avoid the often unintuitive and occasionally atrocious user interfaces in some of these third-party apps.

I guess I'm in the minority. I like the redo. It seems more intuitive to me than the previous interface (although I still wish they'd go back to actual buttons for links instead of faint text).

The Verge had some interesting comments about the app:

https://www.theverge.com/2019/5/13/...scription-channels-rotate-playback-ios-iphone

"Interesting"??? That's a funny way to describe that article. First time I have ever seen the comments section nearly unanimous that it was one of the silliest articles ever to appear in the Verge, and that's saying a lot. Article is mainly about the writer not understanding how the rotation lock/unlock button works and thus he decries having to watch videos in portrait mode. LOL. Maybe too much weed.

Which is of no value whatsoever to non subscribers or users outside of the US of A.

Is there anything else that's worthwhile in this update?
Well there is a change in the wallet app, and also in the wallet section of the watch app. It's a new section called 'express transit' and basically allows to set a card as the default for transit, so that payment can be completed faster by just tapping the iPhone or Apple Watch on the NFC reader without needing to double-click any button and/or authenticate using Face ID or Touch ID.

Just skip the part with "Apple TV" and take the hopefully corrected bugs.
So: nothing really visible, but generally running smoother.
They did make some visible changes in Wallet (and also in the wallet & Apple Pay section of the Apple Watch app) including that the recent transaction listings now include the map for the location where the purchase was made, taken from apple maps, and a new settings section called express transit that allows to select a card to be used for transit where the payment will be automatically made by simply holding the iPhone or Apple Watch near the NFC reader with no need to double click any button or wait for any authentication.

... and it clutters together your own content in a so called “library” which has a pre-alpha user interface of a programmer which might have been smoking weed...

I didn't exactly expect a big line-up of channels in the UK, but to be offered only STARZ and something called "Smithsonian Plus" is comical even by Apple's US centric standards. Stellar effort there Apple, you really pulled out all the stops.
[doublepost=1557816445][/doublepost]I'm not keen on the switch from regular portrait style one sheet art for movie thumbnails to landscape. A lot of the art is now either just portrait art horribly cropped, or portrait art shrunk to a microscopic size and placed into a flat coloured surround. Even the art that has been reformatted often looks bad and amateurish.

Did Apple even bother to test this before rolling it out? It just ugly. Then again, looking at the hideous mock-ups of the next iPhone I guess ugly is back in fashion at Apple. So much for Apple having taste.

See, this is exactly the kind of updates I’d like to read about on the release notes. It wasn’t there even when I clicked for more details.

Also, isn’t it time Apple’s iOS standard apps were able to download as standalone items instead of having to update an entire iOS version for them? And keep the iOS updates at 100MB max for those pesky bug fixes and downloadable over LTE.

I was praying that with the new TV app, they would have updated Family Sharing to allow family members to STREAM content instead of only downloading it. What a stupid issue Apple never fixed/updated.

If anyone has found a way to stream instead of download family sharing content, please let me know!!

I think it makes a valid point in that hitting the full screen button in portrait mode shouldn’t be doing that. It’s dumb and Apple should fix it: It should force video to play in landscape.

But I do enjoy being able to hold the phone or my iPad in portrait sometimes and still be able to play a video without being forced to rotate my device.

Yes. Not a great experience if you’re not a cord-cutter. I don’t plan on using it.

And apparently if you subscribe to a “channel” via the TV app that login doesn’t work everywhere. I guess it’s the same with Amazon. I’m guessing that’s on the content providers to sync subscriptions across platforms? Still Apple’s selling point is supposed to be a better UX. They’re the company that should be solving these problems and eliminating these pain points.

The TV app has improved in only one significant way for me. You can now jump forward and back 15 seconds. Unfortunately scrolling forward or back at high speed through a movie or TV show is now very slow. Typical Apple these days under Tim Apple, improve one thing and really break something else.

Under Tim Apple Apple no longer cares about "better UX." Apple has god awful UX these days. Typical is to add extra steps to do simple things and to hide the fact that you can do them in the first place.
