Apple Releases iOS 14.5 and iPadOS 14.5 With Apple Watch iPhone Unlocking, Dual-SIM 5G Support, Apple Maps Accident Crowdsourcing and Tons More

it's very glitchy ... I do backups to my iMac via iTunes, running Mojave as a background.
Took several tries and then I got the update, chose to do a download only, that failed several times but eventually worked.
Then tried to actually install and it told me iPhone is up to date.
Then it said SW update is required, for iTunes, installed that.
Then tried to update again and it didn't do anything.
Then it said your iPhone is up tp date.
Went through this several times.
Now it is installing ...

I prefer updates NOT over air, so maybe I need to start backing up to my MBP that runs Big Sur public beta ...
You just looking for the most complicated way possible or…?

I save this emoji, 💉, when I heard months ago it was going to be removed from iOS14.5. You can copy and paste to Apple Notes or your keyboard shortcuts if you wish: 💉 .
I’m not sure if this is some sort of weird troll, but I’ll take the bait…

They haven’t removed that emoji. They’ve just removed the red/blood from the image. Saving it somewhere won’t retain the blood (unless you view it something running something earlier than iOS 14.5).

Everything updated (mostly) without incident. Glad to finally be able to unlock my phone when masked. Especially because hand sanitizer fingers didn't seem to do as great a job entering a passcode.

And holy crap, the color balance on Apple TV using the iPhone camera. I was STUNNED by the difference.
It just shows how improper most TVs' settings are out of the box. They tend to be set to show an overly bright and sharp picture, but that will wash out a lot of the fine detail and colors.

A proper calibration on any TV makes a huge difference in the picture quality. Generally, I prefer calibration done on the TV itself, since all devices that are plugged into the TV will look better and the benefit is not limited to playback on the Apple TV. The color balances on most playback devices are closer to reference levels than not. The variation in the settings is typically much bigger with the TV than with the playback devices.

The Apple TV provides a quick and easy way to properly balance out the colors without having to muck around with the TV settings, which can get quite complicated. But, it primarily compensates for how improperly set the TV might be, and there are other settings on the TV that a proper calibration will cover that the Apple TV cannot. If you move that Apple TV over to a properly calibrated TV, the colors will probably look very exaggerated, depending on how big a compensation the Apple TV applied.

Agreed. But this is a 2012 Samsung 3D 1080p TV. I've calibrated it fairly regularly with the Disney WOW disk, but I tweak the settings quite a bit to watch 3D blu rays. It was by no means horrid watching streamed movies from Apple TV, but now the colors are a lot more natural. Except when watching ice hockey; then the profile is too warm.

The main reason to jump on this ASAP is the huge number of zero day exploits fixed in it

Some of them exploited in the wild already.

Couldn't care less about features, I need an unbreakable phone, and, unfortunately, iOS is not it. Adding tons of features all the time doesn't help with this.

Security contents of this update section is grim...

My phone has always been like this. It’s been a couple of days and it’s still not prompting showing that there’s an available update to download. If I went in to check manually it would.

That’s normal, it only checks for updates every few days so unless yours happens to check on the day the new iOS comes out, it won’t alert you on that day to update.

On the last update I wanted to see how long it would take and it was about a month before my phone said there was an update ready to download. My wife’s phone went a couple of months on on of the last updates.

Because the security level is not the same between the two is my guess.
That's a fantastic example of a "if anyone could do it, Apple would be it" use case though and I'm sad they couldn't manage. Lately my Watch does not work with AP or certain POS terminals. And it's a bit of a stressful moment fiddling with my phone to get AP to work. Sometimes I don't even get the passcode right. It's exactly the moment I'd benefit the most from this Watch-iPhone pairing :(

Maybe Apple will be able to come up with a solution in iOS 15.

That's.. not very smart. Or practical.
It’s the safe approach. I think they could have given people the choice on what to enable or not but since the phone will unlock when it sees any face with a mask on and your watch is nearby, they probably thought it’s best to leave Apple Pay disabled to avoid complaints of unauthorized charges.

Tried the face mask unlock at first all ok, tried today in a local store didn’t work.
Been trying it back in the house still not working, shows enter passcode to enable watch to unlock, tried that still not working, both updated to 14.5.
Will try again tomorrow(12 pro and I watch 5)

Was this added? I can’t find anything on it
It is coming sometime this month.
