Apple today released iOS and iPadOS 14.5, marking the fifth major updates to the iOS and iPadOS 14 operating systems that were initially launched in September. iOS 14.5 comes three months after the release of iOS 14.4, and a month after the release of iOS 14.4.2, an update that introduced security fixes.

The iOS and iPadOS 14.5 updates can be downloaded for free and the software is available on all eligible devices over-the-air in the Settings app. To access the new software, go to Settings > General > Software Update.

iOS 14.5 is a major update with a long list of new features, including the ability to unlock an iPhone with an Apple Watch, 5G support for dual-SIM users, new emoji characters, an option to select a preferred music service to use with Siri, crowd sourced data collection for Apple Maps accidents, AirPlay 2 support for Fitness+, and much more.

The update also introduces support for AirTags and Precision Finding on the iPhone 12 models, and it marks the official introduction of App Tracking Transparency. There are a long list of bug fixes, with Apple addressing everything from AirPods switching issues to the green tint that some users saw on iPhone 12 models.

Everything new in the beta can be found in Apple's release notes for the updates, which are listed below:iOS 14.5 and iPadOS 14.5 mark the biggest updates to the iOS 14 operating system to date, and we'll have a full in-depth guide with details on all of the new features coming later today.

Apple Maps Accident Crowdsourcing - does this work anywhere outside the US? I am not seeing in Canada. Strange they would not mention that detail.

Everything updated (mostly) without incident. Glad to finally be able to unlock my phone when masked. Especially because hand sanitizer fingers didn't seem to do as great a job entering a passcode.

And holy crap, the color balance on Apple TV using the iPhone camera. I was STUNNED by the difference.

I’m having a heck of a time trying to update my 2020 iPP. It was in the process of downloading, then went blank. Now, it keeps saying. “Unable to check for update”. 🤷‍♂️

Phone, watch, AppleTV, iMac all updated with zero issues.

So just one very minor glitch to report, having loaded the RC (which has the same build number as today’s release) last week on both my phone and one of my two Apple watches (series 6).

I updated the other watch (series 5) today. Now, the unlock with watch toggle on the phone shows that a software update is required on the AW6- but software shows “up to date” and the build numbers are the same as today’s download to the AW5. Everything works fine, just a little glitch.

My Podcast app is either not refreshing or very delayed in pulling in new shows...anyone else seeing this?

As an aside, all of my subscriptions were wiped out which was a pain.

Is this right? Was going to do OTA update (Shows 1.19GB) If I did this in iTunes, it's 5.33GB
Just wondering. Is that OTA compressed unlike iTunes download...I'm guessing over here, I always do OTA updates.

I tried out the new maps. I like the ability to add a stop to a route in progress. That should have been there all along. That said I have no ability to add accidents or speed traps! Not sure if there will be a supplemental update?

Anyone else’s Podcast app stuck on “Updating Library…” since updating to iOS 14.5?

Downloading on your phone pulls just the bits needed to update that phone. iTunes download includes the entire iOS applicable to all iPhones, so it’s a much larger file. iTunes method is better if you have multiple phones to update and want to download it just once. Otherwise just do it from your phone.

If one doesn't have last generation or newer versions of the iPhone each iOS update gets less and less useful. Outside of bug fixes, there is very little value proposition in my 8 PLUS with the past three updates.

anyone noticing that Siri responses are also shown as text even though that option is not turned on? That kind of thing will get under my skin.. like the new voices though.

Anybody else not getting the ATT prompt? None of the apps I KNOW are tracking me are prompting me. I have the toggle on in privacy settings for them *to* ask. Not happening on my iPhone or iPad. What's the deal?

The now following ten comments are the default reactions on this forum following the release of every OS update ever. I have summarized them for you so you don’t have to read any further!

“The update is not yet available where I live”

“My iPhone/iPad/Macbook doesn’t see the update yet but my other iPhone/iPad/Macbook does!”

“What is the build number?”

“Oh, it’s now available where I live”

“Downloading now…”

“The download process is really slow!”

“I hope they fixed X bug”

“They still haven’t fixed XX bug”

“Apple’s update policy is much better than Google’s”

“Safari is snappier”

Downloading now…

it's very glitchy ... I do backups to my iMac via iTunes, running Mojave as a background.
Took several tries and then I got the update, chose to do a download only, that failed several times but eventually worked.
Then tried to actually install and it told me iPhone is up to date.
Then it said SW update is required, for iTunes, installed that.
Then tried to update again and it didn't do anything.
Then it said your iPhone is up tp date.
Went through this several times.
Now it is installing ...

I prefer updates NOT over air, so maybe I need to start backing up to my MBP that runs Big Sur public beta ...
That’s how I just updated my iPad! Hooked it to mbp and updated through it
