How do I upgrade from, say, 14.3 to 14.8.1? 14.3 is too old to have the UI to choose between 14 and 15.

I suppose downloading the ipsw on a Mac might work?

You can still OTA update directly to 14.8 (and probably 14.8.1 as well). Google "Delayed OTA update". (You will need a Mac and Apple Configurator 2)

Because iOS 14.5 -if I remember correctly- had bluetooth issues. So I waited for the next one. And I don’t remember what issues had 14.6, I guess it was battery life? The famous battery draining problem. So I waited to the next one. Then, iOS 14.7 seemed better than any other, but many people were reporting WiFi, data and cell signal issues, dropping calls and having to enter airplane mode to switch from WiFi to 4G. So I waited for the next one... Then iOS 14.8 showed an even higher battery drain, so I... (you know the rest)

Honestly, my expectations with iOS are that every major release will be better, faster and more stable. However, with iOS 14, it seemed like every time they fixed one thing, they broke another one. So I’ve been always waiting, on the verge of the update.

At this point, and if iOS 15.2 isn’t a catastrophically bad release, I will update all my devices to it. Christmas releases tend to be pretty polished because people buy a lot of devices during this time of the year, and Apple knows that.
Yup this has been my rule for years now. Wait till Christmas to update and it usually safe by then! :)

I’m on the same boat. I’m on iOS 14.4.2 and apparently I am not eligible for this updates. Also, I’d like to perform a clean install, and it is not possible.

You can try the MDM deferral (OTA delay) option: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...5-is-no-longer-possible.2315399/post-30499786
Use Apple Configurator 2 instead of iMazing if you have a Mac.
It's the only way (if it still works).

Because of the GUI.
Also, I think Safari looks terrible on the iPad in iPadOS 15. I'll stick with 14 as long as possible. My main issue with 14.X is typing on website forums and such. Back delete gets slower as you go instead of faster and whole words at a time and text select and spell correct is not very good.

What am I missing that people are holding out on iOS 15? I haven't really noticed any differences besides GUI, but I also dont do a lot on my phone.

There is the entire CSAM controversy, where Apple may be scanning the hashes that are created from the pictures on your phone (not the actual picture itself) and comparing those hashes to a database that contains hashes for child pornography to make sure that the pictures on your phone do not match those child porn hashes. That functionality went live with iOS 15.

That functionality went live with iOS 15.
Except it didn't, of course.

I AM curious though, how did ya'll get stuck on such old versions of iOS 14?

In my case, it's for occasional development/testing. They're only turned on when needed, not as daily drivers. And that's also why I don't want them on 15: I need to know if the app still works fine on 14.

However, the functionality is still there. That is the concern.

I'm trying to update from 14.8 to 14.8.1 (and for now at least I am avoiding upgrading to iOS 15). When I try to update OTA on my iPhone I repeatedly get the error that the update failed, no matter what I do. (Perhaps the same error that user nexu is experiencing?)

This Apple support article advises that if this error repeatedly happens, I will have to update by connecting the phone via USB and using the Finder or iTunes app, as appropriate. I'm still on Mojave, so it's the iTunes app for me.

By default the iTunes app wants to update the phone to iOS 15.1. There's no IPSW available for 14.8.1, so the trick for Option-clicking and selecting my own IPSW file for the update won't work.

Will an IPSW be made available for 14.8.1?

What else can I do?

Could someone please remind me why Apple made available the option to upgrade to iOS/iPadOS 15 or continue to upgrade 14? (I’m happy they did, but I don’t remember their doing it before.)

Thnx.

Yeah I don’t get it either, I always update to the latest iOS version at release and I’ve never had any major issues. Better than having to worry about security issues that have already gotten fixed.

It could be like what we did back in the dark days (read: iOS 3.x) and kept on the lowest available OS that could support a jailbreak.

But I can't complain; I keep my iPad mini 4 on iOS 10.3.3 because I still have 32bit games I play on it that won't be updated to 64bit, and iOS 11 dropped all 32bit support.

They never gave an explanation, but two things come to mind: CSAM and the (now mostly-reverted) UI changes in Safari.

Thanks - I'd forgotten about the CSAM issue. Have updated both my iPad (9.7) and iPhone SE 2 to 14.8.1 with no problems. Am going to follow imagineadam's suggestion to wait for pre-Christmas release of 15.n to update (if then).

The Safari tabs are mostly reverted on iPadOS 15.1, but it keeps the new sidebar, which I’m not a fan of. There’s also still the removal of the Today View.

My guess: to try and keep some of the regulatory antitrust/anticompetition heat off. Apple is getting a lot of criticism from developers for their App Store and related practices lately.

Edited to add: also, maybe they feel that by version 14.x, iOS has matured to the point where they feel they don't need to insist quite so strongly that everyone update to 15.

It’s the same problem I am experiencing and I don’t know what to do

Maybe wiping will make updating possible. And then just restore from backup
