Could you share what items you lost? I am still on iOS 14 as I generally wait until August to update to the next full version. iOS 14 works perfectly for my needs.
My iPhone is on iOS 14.4 & I have no plans to upgrade.

The Apple Podcast app is my most-used app and when iOS 14.5 came out that Apple totally re-wrote the app to render it almost completely useless.

On "14.4," an episode marked "played" is auto-deleted after 24 hours. But if you hit "save" it is saved on a separate queue. I have no doubt that upgrading my iOS will DEL all my saved episodes. This is because I have other iPhones/iPads that are running on later iOS versions and on those devices, hitting "save" on a played episode will NOT save it. The only way to save a played episode is to hit "mark it as unplayed."

Not sure what I will do when my iPhone X dies. I may try to buy a refurbished iPhone from Apple and hope it has iOS 14.4 or earlier (I would appreciate any advice in that area ).

iPhone 13 Pro. The update failed. macOS helpfully offered to restore, now stuck on Apple logo and it disappeared from Finder. So far I give this update zero stars. :(
iPhone 8. My Intel MPB told me too that there was an error. I clicked the option to report it to Apple and simply unplugged the iPhone, which had disappeared from the side bar. I then plugged it again and it resumed the update normally.

YMMV

Well at least now you can download over cellular network, I didn’t have that option under iOS 14.
If you're on WiFi when you start, it'll put up an alternate dialog that asks if you want to continue the download if you move off WiFi before the download has finished. I recall this happening for the previous update as well.

I don't have that problem with iOS 14.8.1

Went to a "played" Podcast episode and after selecting "Save Episode" it showed up in the "Saved" category of the Library.

Well, same pattern as every other update for the last few years:
  1. Install update, then authenticate myself to get back into my iPhone (or iPad)
  2. Get presented with a screen saying the OS has been updated
  3. Get asked if I want to use Siri (yes, I've been using Siri for years)
  4. Get presented with a screen showing how I can use the Home button on my iPhone 8 / iPad Air 3 to activate Siri
  5. Go into Settings > Siri & Search, and TURN Listen for "Hey Siri" BACK OFF.
I said I wanted to use Siri and I do. When I activate it by holding down the Home button. Why does Apple insist on turning "Listen for Hey Siri" back on? I didn't ask for that and I didn't have it on before. You're not being helpful, Apple.

When I'm at home, my HomePods listen for "Hey Siri", and they're the only ones I want answering those requests - I don't need multiple devices trying to decide which is closest / who should handle the response. If I want Siri on any other device, I know which button to push - literally. And, in particular, when I'm out and about, I do NOT want my iPhone / iPad / AirPods listening to the whole world trying to see if someone (maybe me or maybe someone else) said, "Hey Siri".

Yes, I can work around this (as above). I shouldn't have to. They don't appear to wipe out any of my other settings, why do they keep resetting this one?

Long term, you want to be looking for a new podcast app. I use Overcast, but I've heard a lot of good things about Pocket Casts, Castro, Downcast, and I'm sure there's others I'm forgetting. Apple's Podcast app has never been good, any is subject to incompatible changes, as you've seen. All of the others have better, more capable user interfaces, and are regularly maintained, rather than just when a new major OS version is released.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Still no love from Apple for those of us still on iOS 14.

Haven't seen any update for iOS 14 since October 2021.

Apple really wants the rest of us to get on the CSAM train. :(
CSAM? I thought that has not so far been part of any public iOS versions.

Why are people still on iOS 15? iOS 16 public beta seems to be as stable as iOS 15 was on my 13 Pro Max 🤔
Many of us only have one phone, and don't have a separate development device. It's never been a recommended practice to run beta software on your primary device.

"Seems to be as stable" is a poor standard to use - it "seems" like I can drive around without a seatbelt on and nothing ever happens. So, it's perfectly fine to just not wear seatbelts, right? Right?

I know what beta means, and it's not "free sneak peak at something cool that's totally stable".

So I'll wait for the official non-beta release, thanks.
