At least Apple should tell if the supposed to be deleted photos had stayed on the device or on an iCloud server.

People who claim they have someone else's photos appearing are clearly lying.

it's definitely people who saved RAW or original files into their photo library but didn't know until now when they heard supposedly 1 Redditor who already deleted the made up post and went ahead to check on their library.

yeah I'm sure out of the 10,000 photos you have in your library, you found that 1 photo you didn't recognize so fast.

Because they were showing up as most recent in the camera roll...

Ouch. Database "corruption" that can somehow bring data back from "deleted". Whoops.
The database corruption didn’t bring any photos back. The database corruption issue has been in iOS for years, but in 17.5, Apple fixed this issue and restored any photos that got corrupted. However the fix also returned any corrupted photos that were also deleted by the user. Think of 17.5.1 as a fix to the fix they added in 17.5.

Source please.

Looks like they fixed a bug to recover photos from corrupted storage. And it looks like corrupted storage is not wiped when you wipe devices. That is the big issue, if true!!!

I'm highly suspicious of the claims that this is happening on wiped devices. All the data is encrypted at rest, so unless iOS is storing information outside that container (which is a major security issue), then the user didn't actually 'erase all content and data'.

Otherwise, this isn't a big surprise. This is how file systems work - deleted files are marked deleted but not securely wiped. If the pointers get corrupted, files can come back.

What is most concerning of all is the fact that Apple prides themselves with their “most protective privacy policies” and they been able to access your DELETED photos at any point. 🤬

While the existence of this bug is clearly unfortunate, I personally do not see it as a violation of a privacy policy - i.e., there is no credible evidence to-date that Apple has singlehandedly engaged in surveillance or in the sharing of a user's photos with others.

"Now 'deleted' photos won't reappear, but we still have all your deleted photos stored somewhere. Just in case."

Well, good to know that they have addressed the privacy breach of catastrophic proportions in a routine oopsie-woopsie bug fix release.

And thanks to this bug fix, Apple won’t get busted again. Phew!

But folks, don't be distracted by this "bug fix" and every media outlet trumpeting "They fixed the bug! They fixed the bug! Yay Apple!"

The question still remains:

WHY WERE DELETED PHOTOS NEVER DELETED IN THE FIRST PLACE?

Did your photo reappeared? Mine did not and probably not of the 1.4 billion iPhone users. This is an isolated case.
Maybe these users did something out of the ordinary.

Let’s or rush to conclusions.

Instead of having Apple apply a fix to hide the "deleted" photos again, how about they actually delete the photos? People continue to wonder why their storage usage is increasing. Could it be that Apple thinks that hiding things is good enough?
