I was hoping this update would fix the Auto-Refine Handwriting on my 12.9 M2 iPad Pro. It just stopped working a month or so ago, after it had been working well since updating to 18.2 It just constantly shows this message in the spot where I should be able to turn it on or off:

auto-refine-handwriting-wont-download-v0-fnivcf8b3i0e1.jpeg

Has anyone else experienced this issue? If so, did you find a fix? I have done all of the things (restarts, turning Apple Intelligence on and off, turning WiFi on and off, deleting and redownloading the Apple Notes app, updating the firmware and more). 18.3 did not fix the issue.

It's so wonky getting pretty much no updates in this entire iteration of iOS because it's only aimed at the US marked. Not that it looks good by any means. But still, downloading all these big files and nothing in it is unlocked for me unless I do sneaky stuff is so strange. Even more with MacOS where the updates are gigantic but my computer is the very expensive final intel 27 inch iMac and it can barely do any of it because of no M Chip.

iPhone 16 Pro and M1 iPad Pro, had turned Apple Intelligence off on both of them, after the 18.3 update it was back on. No startup dialog offered a way to keep it off, I had to go into the settings after the update was done to disable it.

Everything runs on device except GPT so there’s no privacy concerns or data collection happening.

Settings>Apple Intelligence & Siri and turn off the toggle at the top
So I guess I'm just lucky that I'm using a 2020 iPhone SE which doesn't even have this settings pane. I'm hoping that means my iPhone is too old and clunky to handle AI and not that it's just always on with no off switch.

And yet it *still*, AI or not, can’t simply push maximum ONE notification per app until you’ve viewed/actioned it? Group chats perfect example. You can have either 50 alerts or you can have none at all. Apple years behind with notifications.

Don’t forget, if Apple Intelligence concerns you, “Enhanced Visual Search” in Photos sends some information about your photos to the cloud. It is enabled by default. You can turn it off here:

Settings > Apps > Photos > At the bottom
Enhanced Visual Search

Visual intelligence with Camera Control (All iPhone 16 models)
- Add an event to Calendar from a poster or flyer
- Easily identify plants and animals

How did we ever live without this? Seriously, VI has huge theoretical potential, but if these are the leading examples they can think of to sell it, it clearly isn't ready for anything other than tech demo.

Doesn't have to be useful, just has to mollify the shareholders for another quarter. Wall Street loves tech demos!

That's one intelligent physical button then! How did they squeeze visual intelligence into it? It must be one of those things only Apple can do.
The best part is that Apple was specific in saying that it is NOT a button, correct? Which means that it's the software that is doing the 'magic'. But there is not enough 'magic' in the 15 Pro/Max...

AI is garbage. It hasn't a clue what it's talking about. And the idiots who implement haven't a clue how to stop it going off the rails. Worst of all, fools will use it without due cause, believing it will 'assist' them in topics they know nothing about, forgetting that the stupid AI is nothing more than a probability machine that doesn't always come up correct.

It would be like using a calculator that is wrong 10% of the time. You would have to check each calculation to spot where it errors. And if that's the case, what's the damn point. You don't NEED the calculator at that point. It's only slowing you down.

Just a heads-up for anyone with a device and account eligible for Apple Intelligence but currently visiting a region where it is not available: do not update to iOS 18.3. iOS 18.3 contains two bugs that will mess with the feature and kill your battery life.

1. iOS 18.3 will enable Apple Intelligence by default even if you manually disabled it beforehand, and then force a redownload of the updated AI models. However if you're physically visiting a region where this feature is not supposed to be available, this download will constantly fail and restart in the background. A VPN does not circumvent this problem.

2. Even though the model download process is only supposed to happen when the device is connected to power, a bug causes it to continue even if you're running on battery. This means it will be forced into a perpetual "Downloading..." state and continually drain your battery after you unplug from a charger. Apple also decided to make it so that the option to manually disable Apple Intelligence won't appear until the models have finished downloading so if the download process is stuck then you're out of luck and cannot prevent it from entering this battery-draining error loop.

Your correct using ChatGPT it’s more useful for examples of information online not described enough to be found via web syntax queries that take you to dozens of sites that is more reliable. Coders, grad students looking for particular examples is a common example. Most don’t need this type of search try you luck info, but a lots times it beats hours of searching online educational docs.

Good warning about updating iOS in a locale where there is no way to recover if the update goes sideways.

Will 17.7.4 also be available for iPhones
No.
Apple typically stops signing previous versions of latest iOS 18 in as little as a few days after a new release, so your downgrade option will be limited to the previous version only, and you won't have much time to do it.

Obviously if you have a iPhone that can’t use iOS 18, you can only install the most recent signed version for that particular model.

Oh well. I figured it was worth asking, since Apple also released macOS 14.7.3 and macOS 13.7.3.
