MacRumors has just received word that Apple has seeded a new golden master of iOS 4.2, known as iOS 4.2.1, to developers. The new version carries a build number of 8C148, up from the previous 8C134.

According to those familiar with iOS 4.2.1, Apple has instructed developers not to resubmit their applications under the new build, suggesting that only minor fixes are included.

The Problem

The problem with Apple has always been these interminable release teases. Once again 4.2 is bogged down in apple bugs.

So does this mean they will release 4.2 imminently and then after working out further kinks release 4.2.1? Or would they go straight to 4.2.1?

Why is this a problem? Better to get the bugs worked out with dev releases before putting it in the hands of the consumers.

Not that I think it will happen, but wouldn't this make a release of 4.2 today more likely, since they're already readying 4.2.1?

I don't think so. It seems to me like a 4.2 release will get skipped, and they will release 4.2.1 instead after it is properly tested. But of course that is just speculation.

They said 4.2 would be out "in November." There's still plenty of time left in that window.

I don't even know if installing this or jumping directly to the official version.
I have no problem with the 4.2 GMb

I am really glad to see they are trying to iron out as many kinks as possible before releasing this. I'm a little curious why they chose to go to 4.2.1 and not just keep it at 4.2 with a different build number.

Can someone wiser than me tell me why they would add a .1 before the general release of .0?

The only thing that can be said in response to comments like this is, "Get. A. Life." Interminable? Really? If you're over the age of 15 and saying stuff like that, you really should check your priorities in life.

They said November, and we're just past halfway through it. This is how software development works, and you can imagine the uproar if they released it with these bugs intact.

There is plenty of time for sure. But the fact is why announce something when you don't have the product ready. They have had some serious problems.

Better a stable version than an unstable version, let them test and let us all more patient.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

Jesus Christ. Please just release something and THEN release the app / issue specific patches. I'm running 3.2 and don't have a dev account, and I can't stand these delays any longer.

Excuse me? Have you ever released a software product before? "Bogged down by APPLE BUGS" ????! When you write code it's perfect and ready for release to the masses on the first draft?

Wow....

I am quite sure this is going to be the release version sometime before the end of November.
