Of course Apple could release 4.2.1 and skip 4.2 but that would mean breaking their promise to release in November. If it works for most apps, 4.2 will be released in this month and 4.2.1 will be released in December.

Why do you think they can't release 4.2.1 in November? It sounds like they have things pretty much worked out now. I just can't see Apple releasing 4.2 just for the hell of it when 4.2.1 is ready to go. That just does not make sense.

Here is what will happen. And this is CONFIRMED (its true because I wrote confirmed in caps). 4.2.1 will be released on the 24th. They have already moved on past 4.2.

Just to cover all my bases it's also possible 4.2.1 will be released anywhere from the 19th to the 30th. Like I said this is CONFIRMED.

You guys seriously want 4.2?

How many of you are waiting for AirPrint? Yeah, thought so.
How many are waiting for AirPlay? Do I hear crickets?
How many are waiting for the ridiculously long SMS tones? Hmm?

4.2 seems like a "meh" update to me, but hey, whatever floats your boat.

If you're so eager to print that document, just print it on the computer. Jeeze.

Remember the iPad doesn't have folders, fast app switching, backgrounding, unified inbox, multiple exchange accounts, AirPlay, AirPrint....

I actually didn't think AirPlay would be of any use. At all. But since installing 4.2 GM, I actually use it everyday. It's very useful.

Keep in mind however, that I have a home theater and a stereo each with an Airport Express, and a different home theater with an Apple TV.

um speak for yourself. some of us actually have uses for the new features.
but im glad ive had 4.2 since beta one and now 4.2.1. airplay works awesome

He's just bitter that 4.2 doesn't 'fix' his 'Apple-Owner-OCD-bug' and has become apathetic as a result.

The developer: "ok, let's take this one step at a time, and check things are working, then report what isn't"

The user: "cool! New update. This is great stuff. Let's see what's new, and hope there's no bugs"

The idiot: "ahhh apple! You messed up big time with (insert minor and resolveable complaint here). You suck! I'm going to click negative on Mac rumors because you've ruined my life. My life! Don't you understand apple, it's all about me! me! If it wasn't for me, you wouldn't have a business. The beatles suck, and change back that almost never used switch on the side of the iPad"

:D:D Best post in this thread :D:D

From an Aussie as well wow suppose you need a sense of humour with your cricket team :D

The build of 4.2 which was last released to developers will work for the majority of users. There is a bug that which affects VOIP apps but if you don't use those apps, then you are not affected.

Notice that Apple posted that developers do not need to re-certify their apps for 4.2.1 and can consider 4.2 as the target for the features. 4.2.1 will only fix bugs in the 4.2 release and not add features.

The VOIP bugs is not a show stopper for me as I do not use VOIP apps on my iPad.

IMHO 4.2.1 will be the released version (released this month, as promised), because the negative publicity of serious VoIP bugs is less than ideal in the run-up to Black Friday and the holiday season.

I'm glad Apple is taking its time to fix any bugs. I have been enjoying the benefits of 4.2 (each build since the original GM) for several weeks now and have not had any real problems other than maybe a little re-connection lag when waking from sleep with the first GM. If your wi-fi issues are that bad maybe you've got a bad install or the problems aren't with the iPad. Wireless connectivity is one of the trickiest things to troubleshoot because so many variables can affect performance. I have always done a full restore, not an update. I also know my own personal wi-fi network intimately. However, I am a software engineering graduate student and the University I attend has a diverse wi-fi network; still no wi-fi issues at all since 4.2 GMb. Send me a PM if you want to troubleshoot your issue in greater detail. I'd be happy to try and resolve it. Cheers. :D

Good post, and very kind of you to offer assistance.
Cheers

Can anyone actually explain why this is version 4.2.1, when version 4.2 isn't a released software version? It's not normal, and it makes no sense. If 4.2 is still under development, it should simply be called 4.2.

Wtf?

Maybe because they released 4.2 gold master already and they don't want to have to do gm1, gm2, gm3 every time they find a showstopping bug. That would get confusing.

Except that they already did release a 2nd GM and just put a "b" next to the build number. It doesn't really make sense why they'd give an unreleased OS a ".1" vs just another build number.

However, they would have to give it the .1 designation to a released OS which is what I suspect is the case as they are probably installing 4.2, i.e., the 2nd GM version, at the factory.

The Apple Tv needs an update before anything , it should have never been released in this poor state.

I look forward to video Airplay, but other than that I'm enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. I bought it just to see what it was about but ended up incorporating it into my HT set up. I'm amazed how well it streams video even on "g".

HD video stutters, Subtitles don't work at certain resolutions. MetaData is missing. Music organisation is all over the place. It's a turd Apple need to fix it asap.

Why release an inferior product to the original.

I haven't had any of those problems. Mine works flawlessly. Sorry to hear you are dealing with those things.

Really?

What's so special about 4.2 that everyone is waiting for it to come out?

Seriously? If it's for an iPad it's pretty huge. Multitasking, app folders, unified email inbox, the ability to stream video from your device to an apple tv, printing, fast app switching...

Folder animations for the iPad are still glitchy. Sometimes different colors appear when opening and closing the folder. I also got the status bar to disappear one time in mail. Still some bugs in my opinion.

Apple would be better off delaying it to early next year so they have plenty of time to make sure it's working very well.

Whereas with the 2G iPod Touch there's very little new. Notes now gives you a choice of fonts, and there's a new icon for Voice Memos, but I can't think of anything else other than bug fixes and API changes. Airprint hasn't made it due to a lack of resources, and Airplay may too be missing.

Well, I have Airprint and it's very cool. So, +1 for Airprint.

Airplay? Yes, I want Airplay to my AppleTV enabled. So, +1 for Airplay.

SMS tones... if I can customize them, yes. I don't like any of the new ones they added.

Folders on the iPad? Multi-tasking? Nothing meh about those.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

Found a bug. On 4.2.1 .... Make a FaceTime call and hang up. All keyboards and lock/unlocks sounds are either muted or lowered greatly. Have to turn off my iphone4 then back on to get the sounds to work.

Interesting. Sounds like 4.2.x is still in need of some baking. No surprise given the extent of the update. Let's hope most of these get squashed before it's released.
