Apple Releases iOS 4.2.1 Golden Master to Developers

I've been optimistic that this iOS 4 it's already been jailbreaked, however, not yet reported as jailbroken.
Hopefully within the first week of release we'll see the jailbreak spreading
 
Seems snappier, VOIP issue was fixed and it includes the Wi-Fi fix too (obviously). Baseband version also remains the same.

I guess this is it for iOS 4 save for possible future security patches.

Whoever is complaining about 4.2 not being released yet needs to go get laid and get a life. You're pathetic and make all tech geeks look bad. Cry me a river and build me a bridge. Have some patience for gods sake. The end.

The beatles do not suck if it weren't for them god knows how the world would have endedd up? For all we know we could be all dead. The nuclear war that could of started between the USSR and the us could of killed us all if it weren't for the beatles. BIG LOL on that but I like the beatles I take an offense to your statement. But everything else in your statement is 99.9999 percent plausible

Psssst. I was taking the piss out of the Mac Rumors posters, and a few of the biggest overblown statements of the last few weeks. I actually like the Beatles.

4.2 seems like a "meh" update to me, but hey, whatever floats your boat.

If you're so eager to print that document, just print it on the computer. Jeeze.

I'm glad Apple is taking its time to fix any bugs. I have been enjoying the benefits of 4.2 (each build since the original GM) for several weeks now and have not had any real problems other than maybe a little re-connection lag when waking from sleep with the first GM. If your wi-fi issues are that bad maybe you've got a bad install or the problems aren't with the iPad. Wireless connectivity is one of the trickiest things to troubleshoot because so many variables can affect performance. I have always done a full restore, not an update. I also know my own personal wi-fi network intimately. However, I am a software engineering graduate student and the University I attend has a diverse wi-fi network; still no wi-fi issues at all since 4.2 GMb. Send me a PM if you want to troubleshoot your issue in greater detail. I'd be happy to try and resolve it. Cheers. :D

Remember the iPad doesn't have folders, fast app switching, backgrounding, unified inbox, multiple exchange accounts, AirPlay, AirPrint....:cool:

um speak for yourself. some of us actually have uses for the new features.
but im glad ive had 4.2 since beta one and now 4.2.1. airplay works awesome

Oh, give me a break. Absolutely all software has bugs. Heaven forbid a release that had no official release date anyway was "delayed" a whole week later.

I'm pretty sure the 4.2 betas have spoiled him. He needs to be cursed with 3.2.2 on his ipad and 4.x on his iPhone. Maybe then he will realize whats up.

I actually didn't think AirPlay would be of any use. At all. But since installing 4.2 GM, I actually use it everyday. It's very useful.

Keep in mind however, that I have a home theater and a stereo each with an Airport Express, and a different home theater with an Apple TV.
 
Mute Button

So far I have found that on my iPad the mute button does not function .... what so ever for me


Is that the case for other people ? But on my 4.2.1 the mute is not working :)

I usually put my phone into DFU mode to do software updates, and then restore from a backup... I updated to 4.2 GM that way without issue, but I'm having a problem doing that this time around...

When I put the phone into DFU mode, it comes up with an error saying something to the effect that iTunes cannot connect to the update servers... any reason why that might be the case?

Just because you have no use for this stuff doesn't mean no one else does either. For some of us AirPrint and AiPplay will be a huge bonus and convenience, especially the latter. I mean just think, you load up your idisk app, email app, or whatever it is with a single touch of a button and just print as you walk into the office or campus, or you waste time having to authenticate, log in to the computer hardwired to the printer, load up your gmail or mobileme webpage from the browser (authenticating again), select your file, download it, print it, log out of everything. As for airplay, well itunes is a hog on my machine which is always sure to send the fans in a furry and make my computer hot as hell. If I can just control and stream everything off the ipad directly to the sound system without the computer on, or at least itunes running, that's a major convenience. Also, with Pandora or the like, I also have an automatic DJ that gives me new content and doesn't require my working with itunes. Again, major convenience. Streaming some video to the big screen from webpage is going to be another huge convenience. Don't have to connect all kinds of cables and run the laptop super hot again simply to watch a game.

Release Date for 4.2.1

I was looking at wikipedia and beside the software versions it states the release date and it says that november 24th is the release date but thats has been sourced from A Telegraph News Post that was put up on their site on the 12th. A lot has happened since then so i'll be hoping their wrong.

Are you sure that the mute button is actually not working? It works the same as on the iPhone and iPod Touch (i.e., it mutes ambient sounds, not requested playback). So, for instance, if mute is on you shouldn't hear calendar alerts or email alerts, but you will hear your iPod playing music or a game that has a playback session playing music etc whether you switch on mute or not.

If you want it you can have it installed and on your device, fully restored in about 1-2 hours depending on network traffic. Gumball has the links and you don't need a developer ID. I've run all three GM's now and they've all been great. Why the endless whining, update already!
