Apple Releases iOS 6.1.3 With Passcode Bug Fix and Japanese Maps Enhancements, Kills Evasi0n Jailbreak

Oh sweet. I was almost worried that someone would use the pass code bug and steal all of my contacts and prank them so I switched over to the Galaxy S3. Atleast now they can't do the passcode bug.

I actually have foregone the jailbreak to primarily address the pass code lock issue and wishfully hope that 6.1.3 improves battery life and fixes some annoying bugs.

Security is a pretty big concern with me as is my privacy. Having a firmware that would allow someone to circumvent the passcode lock on the iPhone in my mind is a big problem.

Oh well, there will be other opportunities down the road to jailbreak.;)

That's an easy one: There is a whole lot more wrong with maps than just the data.

As an example, I was in Hong Kong and the reason Apple Maps was useless there was the "detail-at-a-given-zoom-level" setting. If I zoomed out enough to see more than one street, I wouldn't see street names for side streets. If I zoomed in enough to see the side street names, I didn't see any context (just one large street zoomed all the way in in the middle).

Google Maps wasn't out at the time so I made do with Google Maps in Safari. Pretty horrible compared to maps in iOS 5, but still leaps and bounds better than Apple Maps. In HK.
Apple added 3D buildings to Japan. That's a pretty big update. I hope that it will extend to HK soon but I don't hold my breath for it.

Ahh finally the fix to remove choice from my device and lock me securely back into apples airtight eco system that i have been waiting for ...

Think ill stick with the build i have + Cydia until apple add a feature to the updates instead of just releasing updates that close jailbreaks.

Apple seems to have gone from innovating, to evolving, to stagnating, to normal corporate bullcrap in record time since SJ passed.

You must be kidding. Apple has been aggressively patching jailbreaks well before Jobs passed... In fact, they've become softer. They even silently removed the section shadow-mentioning Jailbreak from the warranty so it doesn't officially void it anymore.

Sarcasm or are you asking for real? If latter, then, I have a jailbroken iPhone 5 and I am very happy with it.

Fine, but you realize that every jailbreak is something that Apple has to fix, because, in one case, all you had to do was go to a website, after which you could get in a lot of trouble?

Why not? It is free research and development after all:D I have no idea why APPLE does not embrace Jailbreaking considering how much it really does help them. But then again that's like asking why Marijuana is still illegal when it actively halts so many illnesses and life altering diseases.

Makes no logical sense on either front if you ask me. I thought APPLE was pro open source and all about community?

Ironically enough, how wrong is it to take a Open Source Platform such as FREE BSD and close it completely down>? Still trying to figure out how they have not been sued or challenged in court on that one for many years now.

What about improvements to the US maps?

Unless I'm mistaken, most improvements to maps in the US will be done server side and won't require an update through firmware. The only reason they had to update for Japan is that were changing how data was displayed on a device for the Japanese maps. The Loop posted an article about a week or so ago about all the places Apple had updated in the background. You'd really only notice if you lived there. I'm still waiting for San Antonio updates. I don't think we have even had a satellite or map error correction made yet.

Apple's entire security model is based on there being no Jailbreaks. Jailbreaking means exploits, and it means somebody can write malware to take over your phone. If you jailbreak your phone it means you've found a way around Apple's security. Obviously, they can't let this happen.

The fact that Android market place is overrun by malware kind of makes the argument for them if you ask me.

By the way I am jailbreaking most of my iOS devices. I am in no way against jailbreaking. But it's really easy to understand where Apple is coming from.

I don't need 3D buildings. I need the basics to work. Good map data, and appropriate by which I mean WAY MORE amount of information shown at a given zoom level.

Apple Maps in HK was very pristine, clean... because it didn't actually show anything you wanted to know. I guess HK is a very high density urban area and that has something to do with it. Google maps pulled this off perfectly though, showing all you need to know (which is a lot); and Google maps also had way more data on POIs and so on, but that's a separate issue.

Ok about battery life: I jumped the shark and gave up my jailbreak because I really need my battery life fixed.

I am cautiously optimistic at this point - I am showing a constant drain of 4% per hour under light / normal use. That's just a tiny bit better than before.

Who else is monitoring battery life? Any changes for better or for worse in 6.1.3?

Without the jailbreakers and thier ability to find the exploits, how many would ave been fixed by Apple on thier own? If you ask me, Apple has been getting free consultation on where there are holes in their software, even hardware

I just want my @$!# bluetooth to work in my car again!

Oh, and I'd love for Location Services to not ALWAYS be activated when I wake my phone up. There's no reason for it to be on all the time, particularly when I don't have anything running in the background.

Weather on Privacy is On or Off ?

I have noticed an improvement in battery life, similar 4% per hr over light usage.

I also am noticing better lte signal strength on Rogers in Montreal.

I'm going to test some known week spots later today.

Wow, the battery of my 4S seems to last longer - after 30 min. of usage still at 100%. Before the update (yesterday) it went down 1% in 5-10 minutes under 6.1.2 (which was supposted to fix a battery issue also for the 4S) Thats cool, thanks Apple

EDIT: Or is there something wrong with the indicator now - lol

Hmm, after installing 6.1.3 I noticed an update of the Asphalt racing game, which is a little more than 1 GB in total size. I had 2,5 GB free memory but the App-store rejected the update "due to lack of free memory" and I was asked to "clean up". So I deleted Asphalt and then I was able to download. Yes, maybe the is a issue there.

Is it really a feature though? I always wondered why does the iPhone disconnect from Wifi in sleep mode, yet retains the more battery-draining 3G connection...

There are networks that do not have GSM connection anymore.

So for you to get text messages and phone calls they need to have 3G band active. Wifi on the other hand, no.

I have enough space on mini and I cannot even download new apps. It keeps notifying 'cannot connect to itunes store'. Everything is fine with internet connection. I've just updated iphone 5, and no such problems

How do you plug headphones into an apple tv?

Why would i want to use headphones to watch TV? i have a perfectly good Home Cinema system to pump that sound through ?

Not really, not when unlimited data is rare nowadays. The highest we can get is 1Gb/month!

Here in the UK unlimited data is pretty much the norm on a lot of networks once you get one step up from basic contract rates, apple could lift the limit for countries that are not as technologically backwards as the USA :p

If you've got a problem with Apple's ecosystem then move. Instead of just moaning about it?

i love the eco system, its the random parts of it that just don't make sense mixed in with the genius parts that make SO much sense and are so usable, with a random crappy idea, if Apple made cars it would make a supercar, then add square wheels for no apparent reason.

Same problem for me since updating. I'm on an iPhone 5, cannot update apps or download new ones.
