I feel the volume has increased from before, especially when playing music. I always felt that the volume was softer on the 5 than on the 4 (which was my previous phone). On the 4 , I would never go to max volume but on my 5 , I would frequently have to go to max volume (with headphones/earpods).

Just put some music on after installing (and forgetting about) the update last night. Nearly fell off my chair. It's louder for sure. Distortion I used to notice has been totally cleaned up.

Or it might just be my imagination.

Why doesn't Apple give us prompts that an update is available? It's been what 3 days since the update was released and I had to go into settings>general>software update to find that an update was available. Maybe it's because this is not an important update?

So I read this entire thread today to find out that of all 9 pages, there are only a handful of actual helpful responses, 90% fluff and 10% good info from users who have compared the update. LOL

Can you hear me now? :D
Off to get my update now ;)

Well, since I am a huge audio fan I decided to do a comparison before and after the update. I captured the audio using a mic into my soundcard of my PC and set the mic up 3 inches from the speakerphone of my iPhone 5 (no case on iphone so nothing to block sound. I actually did 2 tests before and after the software update. Here is what I did:

Tested Before 6.1.4 software update, iPhone sound at 75% volume
Tested Before 6.1.4 software update, iPhone sound 100% volume

Then installed update

Tested After 6.1.4 software update, iPhone sound at 75% volume
Tested After 6.1.4 software update, iPhone sound 100% volume

My findings:
I used the same 45 second clip of a song in my itunes library on my iphone 5 to do the comparison, recording it each time separately for each listed above.

It was hard to tell the difference much when at the 75% volume. However when listening to each at the 100% volume level before and after the update, I can tell after the update that the sound is just a tad better, it has less of a tiny sound, slightly fuller, there is a spot in the song when at the 100 level I can tell it vibrates a bit more before the update and after in the same spot on that song it sounds better controlled, the reason I say it sounds a bit fuller and a bit less distortion.

So I would say the update a tad better when listening to music at 100%. I would also say it's going to sound better when watching music videos and such at 100% too.

Thanks for actually taking the time to do this and post your results. Unlike the rest of the gang in here talking nonsense (which I do enjoy lol) - it was good to actually see someone put the update to the test to see if there is a noticeable difference or not.

Thank you sir!

It's not really about that, it's more about the carriers not wanting tons and tons of users--since there are quite a few iPhone users across pretty much all the carriers--all almost simultaneously downloading updates (even if the updates aren't that large themselves).

It might not be much on its own, but when tons of users do it, and when they do it all together (or in large groups in more or less the same periods of time, which often happens when updates are just released), it certainly can add up.

Good point

This doesn't always show up right away. It wasn't showing on either of the two iPhone 5's we own until I went into the software update section. I had no clue about this update until I just stumbled onto it here on the forums.

^^Right, in the past I have received this image before when there is an update but this time, I never got it.

I would say there are alot of iPhone 5 users who do not even know about this update because there is no notification and don't frequent forums.

So why has apple changed how they notify it's customers about updates?

They do display a notification, it's just they don't display an update notification right away, and sometimes not at the same time for everyone--some might get it the same day or a day or two later, while others maybe a couple of days later. Typically within a few days (or so) of an update most people will get the notification.

That's strange. Anytime that there has been a new software update released I've had the badge displayed the same day the software update has been released.

quick question

So the screen at the beginning shows the update being only 11.5MB but I have had 6.1.3 and when iTunes said 6.1.4 was available, it was a 990MB download. Am I missing something? These incremental updates for me at least have just gotten bigger, they are never just a quick DL'd like 11.5MB. Just looking for a reason. This is on an iphone5 too in case anyone is wondering. Thanks

When you update OTA, it's a delta update and only downloads the changes.

When you update via iTunes, it downloads the entire iOS again.

Settings, General, Software Update, Download and Install and Boom! Your update is installing, without a 990MB download and the crazy restoration process.

Thanks for the heads up Tyler, I have always updated with itunes and I knew the update on the phone was there I just never looked at the size. :)

Just love the new feature 6.1.4 has installed on my iPhone 5...4S mode!

Saying that, i think it's worse then my 4S was, and they call this an update

Well, that certainly says a lot. Care to at least provide even a tiny bit of actual information relating to what you are talking about? What exactly happened? What are you noticing?

Ah I left a a certain word called 'Battery' out. After updating to 6.1.4 my battery performed like my old 4S.

Restored and set up as new and all seems good so far, well better at least.

with jailbreak you wont be allowed to upgrade your iphone to the latest release unless you do it via itunes software update

Most of the time I tend to do the update through iTunes, occasionally I'll do it through the iPhone when I get prompted by the badge on Settings that there's an update. But I don't jailbreak my iPhone so I'm free to do it whichever way :)
