Also noticing that my iPhone 5s is taking a few more seconds than normal to connect to wifi when turning on from standby. Random but just something I noticed with beta 5.

Right done restores and setup as new on both devices and AirDrop worked no proble between them. Restored again setting up with the iCloud backups I had made just before the 1st restore and Airdrop is no longer working. So the only conclusion I can draw right now is that during non clean installs of new betas it can play with the way AirDrop works.

Hmmm...interesting indeed and good observation. Because of this issue I rolled back to beta 4 and it still doesn't works. At this moment I'm downloading beta 5 again. I will give it a shot without my iCloud restore.

Man I really don't want to go through the process of downloading my apps manually and setting everything back to the way it was pre-beta 5.

Oh we'll back to the grind!!!

I would bet that after restoring a backup if you performed settings>reset>reset all settings it would work. That is a pretty common fix for broken stuff after an upgrade or backup restore.

@siroht try the reset all settings after you upgrade or restore your backup. It may solve it for you

Just tried this on both devices and did not make any difference. AirDrop wouldn't work after resetting only the settings.

Why can't they just make it that all the letters on the keybaord are lower case and when you click on the shift key they all show capitalized?

I thought about that too, but I have now realized it looks too "messy". The keyboard on the Nintendo 3DS does this, and it gets really annoying and confusing when the letters change size and and shape. It also a little bit harder for me to recognize letters in when they're in lower case.

Ok guys after encountering issues with AirDrop after installing Beta 5 early this afternoon, I rolled back to Beta 4, and then back to Beta 5 again with no success with initiating AirDrop. I performed iCloud/iTunes backups on both my Air and iP5S with no success.

I tried weegrim's suggestion by completely erasing/restoring both devices after the initial install of Beta 5; setting them up as new devices. Immediately after I was able to get to the Home screen, I tested Airdrop multiple times in multiple apps and each and every time it worked like a charm. As a matter of fact it seems to connect faster in Beta 5 than it did in previous betas.

Of course I had to go through the painstaking process of downloading 100's of apps for both devices and getting all my settings/logins back to my liking. After I finished I took AirDrop through the paces again, and the functionality performed without a hiccup. I reviewed every nook and cranny in regards to performance, memory management(Safari), etc....and I must say that compared to previous betas this one is smooth as silk all around, especially on my iPad.

Oh well it appears that restoring your device from a backup can inadvertently cause random issues. I'm not sure if I would want to make it a ritual to set my devices up as new device each and every time a update is pushed out. When 7.1 officially released I will give the iCloud backup process another chance, however for betas I will stick to setting my devices up as new:D

Actually some big changes.

iOS 7.1 sure is becoming a big "x.1" update. iOS 5.1 just brought the camera slide thing on the lock screen that we all hated at first. Plus 5.1 put most of the emphasis on Japanese Siri. Then iOS 6.1 did nothing but add a Fandango button to movies in Siri. But 7.1, this update is making tweaks all over the place. I guess it all makes sense. After all, iOS did venture into a completely new theme last year.

Don't forget how 6.1 made iOS 6.x stable. People seem to forget that iOS 6.0 was a turd. Hello resprings.

there is a bug where i cant remove missed notification, the dismiss button is non existant

What "real " issues are you referring to that are not getting fixed?

This may be a little off topic for this thread, but since you asked... ;) Just off the top of my head:

Notification Center is a major step backwards from iOS 6. The new look is nice, but the previous version was superior in every other way:
  • All info on one page to see everything at a quick glance
  • Weather had 5-day forecast with icons, iOS 7 version has just one day in a bunch of text that takes longer to read than glancing at icons
  • Not a comparison to iOS 6, but in its 3rd major revision, NC should allow apps to add "widgets" like the built-in stock and weather ones.
Control Center is a nice addition, but there's room for improvement in an update like 7.1:
  • iPhone 5+ devices have room for another row of toggles: things like Location Services, Cellular Data, LTE/4G/3G, Personal Hotspot, Lock With Passcode Now, etc.
  • Even better would be to customize which toggles are in CC.
  • Button layout in landscape vs. portrait is nonsensical. It would make much more sense to me to put them in the same physical place on the screen, just rotating their icons as appropriate.
Siri is still a mess and major frustration, also in its 3rd major revision. I hate it when people say "If Steve Jobs were still around, x would never have happened..." but in this case, I do wonder if Siri would suck so much if he were still alive. I can just imagine him ripping the Siri team a new one after the frustration of actually trying to use it.
  • Frequently I get the dreaded "I'm really sorry about this, but I can't take any requests right now" even with a perfectly good internet connection. And even when not, it still takes way too long because they haven't fixed the fundamental flaw of requiring internet to do anything.
  • Every function in built-in apps should be accessible via Siri by now. There's no reason why Apple can't have a huge, dedicated team of developers whose only job is to expand the number of commands Siri recognizes. Each point release could roll in the latest batch of supported commands.
  • Why can't it read me old text messages that I've already seen? Why can't I tell it to read me the current web page in Safari (or any text on the screen in any app)? There are tons of other potential capabilities that should be there by now - at least if Siri were designed properly so that multiple teams within Apple could easily tap into it and add to its abilities.
  • Plenty of things Siri does are not truly "eyes-free." Such as when I say, "where's my wife?" and it brings up a map from Find My Friends. No, just read me her location! The data is all there. This is useless when driving... unless that's the point, to only truly support those few car manufacturers who are working specifically with Apple. In which case,.
  • There should be a way for third party apps to provide functionality via Siri by now. Yes, it's a hard problem to figure out whether a command was meant for an app or the system, so why not start out simple? Model it after another Apple product, AppleScript: "tell Redbox to find <movie> at a kiosk near me." "tell Nest to set the temperature to 72." Etc.
Privacy controls are better than Android, but could still be improved. When I post a photo to Facebook, I don't want to authorize the FB app to see all of my photos - I only want to authorize that one specific photo. I don't trust Zuckerberg to keep his grubby hands off my stuff without madly uploading it for "analysis" somewhere. Same with Location. There should be a way to temporarily authorize this stuff without the hassle of leaving the app, going to Settings, going back, etc.

Sync with iTunes is a horrible experience. Wifi sync rarely works for me, and USB sync takes FOR-EV-ER to add new songs to my iPhone. I have a large library, and if I want to add a few new songs to the device, I might as well start the sync and come back the next morning. It usually literally takes hours to do what should take seconds. Someone needs to trash all of their sync code and rebuild the functionality from scratch.

Little things:
  • The Music app lost the ability to add all songs from an album to a playlist at once. It should also be able to add all songs from another playlist.
  • The Music app also frequently loses its place when resuming playback. It either starts back at the beginning of the song, or in some cases just loses the "Now Playing" list entirely. No reason why it couldn't write a simple checkpoint file with the current song and position every 10 seconds or so, and use that if the app was killed or the device rebooted since last play.
  • Why doesn't the iTunes app have a "Preview All" button like the desktop version?
  • My Wifi speed is generally very poor unless very close to the base station. This is even when the status bar shows full bars. Don't know if it's hardware or software, though.

Sorry for the long post. And that's just what I can think of off the top of my head. Actually I have others, but I'll stop here. I like to paraphrase an old quote that was originally about email clients but applies equally well to computers, operating systems, and other software or devices:
All mobile operating systems suck. This one just sucks less.

Back to your regularly scheduled Beta 5 thread... :)

could some one answer this....

1. Safari crashes fixed.... ?
2. email stuck when refreshed & wrong notification count ?
3. How's battery life (till now...) ?

I hope this update will fix my frequently crashing iPad Air that has this irritating habit to restart itself. Especially VERY annoying when typing text when in a sudden the screen drops to black and after few seconds starts to restart itself. You can start typing the whole message again.

This issue is something many iPad air owners recognize, it's a bloody shame that people pay so much money for a device that's simply not reliable.

This may be a little off topic for this thread, but since you asked... ;) Just off the top of my head

OK well most of this list is referring to items you don't like about iOS7. I get that but was wondering what broken items in iOS7 were not getting resolved with a .1 release. Anyway I think you answered it somewhere in that list :) There are a LOT of broken items that are being addressed. Not a lot of changes of how things work for folks who don't like how it currently works in 7. Maybe iOS8 will help with some of those issues. I doubt any point release will.

Random question. In this beta does anyone else find that the Siri voices are different on the iPad from iPhone? For both male and female options on the UK setting. To me the iPhone version seems more "mechanical" whilst the iPad's version seems more "natural".

Maybe the high quality voices just haven't downloaded onto the iPhone just yet?

Any way to prompt that to happen? I was under the impression that all that had to be done was have the iDevice connected to wifi after it had been restored and plugged in once. It's had these things just as much as the iPad has. Or is there a way to trigger it?

One update that has been overdue is languages. It's been x years since first beta release. Sweden is waiting!!!

We have been waiting and have been promised 'more languages will be added over time' for a while now.

iPhone 4?

Don't forget how 6.1 made iOS 6.x stable. People seem to forget that iOS 6.0 was a turd. Hello resprings.
I see. These are times I am a little glad I at least waited for the iPhone 4S before getting a 4. It seems these 4's are constantly crashing and lagging after every update.

Plus seemingly a lot of under the hood type of changes/enhancements.
Well yes. I found it insignificant to mention minor bug fixes since every iOS update mentions "under the hood" improvements.

Under the hood changes are not generally the same thing as minor bug fixes, the two are not the same although sometimes they can exist together. In the case of iOS 7.1 the under the hood changes affecting performance/stability are way beyond any minor big fixes and quite possibly represent the main changes in iOS 7.1 (despite being largely invisible to the user in the sense that those under the hood changes don't modify any interface elements or add new features).
