"Preparing update" definitely takes a while. I downloaded the 1.1 GB file to my 5s in about 4 minutes, which means I've been sitting on "Preparing update" for the past 30 minutes. In that time, the bar progressed about 75% of the way across.

Mine has been at it for about 15 minutes. This illustrates the value of the Retina display, since I can look at it under a magnifying glass and see if the progress bar is actually moving. :)

The iTunes download is slow. You can d/l the ipsw file from the link provided earlier.

Put it directly where iTunes puts it. /library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates.

Much faster!

It jumps back and forth from 2-4 hours...

2hrs, 1hr, 40mins, 2hrs, 1 hr, seem to be hitting server issues on my download. Hopefully it won't be all night waiting for things to ease up. Glad apple has separate servers for iTunes etc or it'd be blackout for apple tv etc as well.

My iTunes finally found the Apple servers and started downloading the update. It says it should take . . . three hours.

I have tried multiple times to download OTA and via iTunes. The message I get is that the server cannot be contacted via iTunes and it appears to time out via OTA asking if you want to retry. This is with my iPhone on my home wifi, since wifi is required. I then turned off wifi on my phone and it found the server and showed the available update right away. I switched wifi back on and then it started to download. I am on verizon fios ... dont know why I could not get through via them...but if anyone is having the same issue, its worth a try.

The joke is on the people with an 8 GB 5c. Delete all your apps and photos so you can install the update.

Not true.
You could connect your phone to iTunes and update.
It needs this much space to download, extract install and delete files for the install. So if you have an 8GB or not enough space; just connect to iTunes. No problem.

Has Apple borrowed the good old Windows Copy algorithm?

"About 6 minutes remaining, 2 hours remaining, 1 hour remaining. Nevermind 9 minutes..." etc

For all the people claiming that they can't check for update, it's because jailbroken devices can't be OTA'd to iOS 8. You must do a restore.

If the rest of you would kindly just stop updating, my download would go a lot faster.

Why don't we all take turns?
