I don't think anybody at Apple would sit around doing nothing.
Some of the artists may be free lancers , so not having to pay them for EMOJI saves money.

As to what some people want: We really need 100s of EMOJI, because we can't just type :) or :(
or what we want to say?

And, if somebody WANTS EMOJI I think they have some psychological issues that have to be treated.

The unicode standard doesn't decide what is useful or useless. They just streamline things, so we don't end up with VHS, VHS-C, Beta , 8mm and all kinds of different standards.

Good god, this has to be one of the most babbling, idiotic things I've read in a long time.

Psychological issues? Really? For liking an image? A statement like that suggests the writer might be the one who needs the attention.

I'm not a huge user of emoji, but I do occasionally include them. And sometimes it's nice when my wife finishes of a message to me with a little heart, rather than just an x.

If people don't like the emoji, disable them, you'll never have to see them on your keyboard again, where's the problem with that.

An image has the capacity to convey an emotion, feeling or opinion instantly as opposed to reading that same message in several words or paragraphs.

For instance, after reading that post, instead of writing all of this I could just as easily have typed,

Let's get ready for the day when instead of using words all people type are EMOJI.
Nice!

I think any rational person with more than a passing acquaintance with their native language will continue to use it. Just as it has been for centuries.

In fact I'm almost entirely certain that since the introduction of the written word, it has managed to coexist with illustration. Often these illustrations, or "graphics" as they are sometimes known, have been used within the contents of the very same document, sometimes even on the same page.

This imagery has been known to have been used to convey emotion, impart knowledge and understanding of an otherwise unseen entity or in some cases simply to encourage a persons imagination. Although, you're probably right, we should get rid of all of that nonsense, who needs something as fanciful as an imagination or emotion.

Emoji has nothing to do with skeuomorphism.

Since skeuomorphism
is the design concept of making items resemble their real-world counterparts, I think the added shadows, highlights, etc. of the emojis (not just the faces, but little characters, buildings…) I'd say they are becoming more skeuomorphic.

Apple today released iOS 9.1 to the public, marking the first major update to the iOS 9 operating system that launched in September. In testing since before iOS 9 was even released, iOS 9.1 was beta tested for more than a month before its launch, with developers and public beta testers receiving five betas in total.

Today's iOS 9.1 update is available as an over-the-air update to all iOS 9 users. It is the third update to iOS 9 so far, with Apple having previously released iOS 9.0.1 and iOS 9.0.2. Apple has also released Xcode 7.1 and the tvOS golden master (GM), which represents the final version of the software that will be available when the new Apple TV launches next week.

iOS 9.1 has a limited number of outward facing changes. It includes support for Unicode 7 and 8, introducing a range of new emoji like taco, burrito, cheese wedge, middle finger, champagne bottle, unicorn head, and more.

iOS 9.1 includes an update for Live Photos, which now sense when the iPhone is raised or lowered to refrain from recording unnecessary movements. The update also introduces a new Messages option in the Settings app that is designed to allow users to disable photos for contacts, and it brings Apple News to the UK and Australia for the first time.

Aside from these changes, iOS 9.1 includes new features and compatibility updates for upcoming Apple products like the fourth-generation Apple TV and the iPad Pro The new Apple TV requires iOS 9.1 to be set up using an iOS device.

iOS 9.1 also includes bug fixes for a number of issues that iOS users have been experiencing, and as with most iOS updates, it enhances performance and introduces important security fixes.

Update: iOS 9.1 includes security updates that break the recent iOS 9 Pangu jailbreak.

In my experience, the last two iOS updates I did to my Ipad have been horrible, and seem to be getting progressively worse. Most of my fellow mac using friends think Apple is doing this on purpose so you're forced to buy a new Ipad eventually, planned obsolescence. The last update I did, which was the one right before this one is so buggy. My ipad types on its own sometimes, and the touch screen is all messed up. It worked fine a few updates ago. There is no way I am updated to this one or any further iOS updates Mac dishes out. I love it how you cannot go back to an earlier iOS once you actually go through with the update.

Make sure you read all the reviews about this update before you install it, and if you're not on a brand new, top of the line ipad, I'd think twice before upgrading at all.
