Apple Releases iOS and iPadOS 14.4.2 to Fix Actively Exploited Security Vulnerability

Upgraded my 2020 iPad Pro and the update put my ipad in to restore mode. First time that has ever happened to me on any Apple update.
Maybe I just downloaded the exploit!
The pad was up-to-date...curious.It was less than 200 MB on my iPad 10.5 running 14.4.1. Maybe you were still on 14.4.0 and couldn't use a delta image to upgrade?

Ahhh, no. Through iTunes. That must be it. Usually, though they are only ~2GB.
Seems to have installed OK. Did take a little while.
Just did 14.4.1 the other day. Haven't noticed anything funny the last few days, but something must have been out of whack.
JUST RELEASE 14.5 !! they are holding it up for Facebook, Google & the other security tracking violators. These almost every 10 days security updates are a pain- RELEASE 14.5!
I think they are holding it due to pressure from Google & Facebook the ultimate tracking snoops.

It's a webkit update, which means that Chrome, Edge and Safari probably have nothing to do, which is different than a browser update. And whether the entire phone gets updated or not is irrelevant. The salient word is "updated."
It is, so that would seem to indicate that it is quite critical and truly is being actively exploited.
If it's a web security thing, then why not a Safari or a macOS update?
Apple today released iOS and iPadOS 14.4.2, minor security updates that come close to three weeks after the release of iOS/iPadOS 14.4.1 and more than a month after the iOS/iPadOS 14.4 updates.
The iOS and iPadOS 14.4.2 updates can be downloaded for free and the software is available on all eligible devices over-the-air in the Settings app. To access the new software, go to Settings > General > Software Update.
According to Apple's release notes, the software provides an important security fixes and should be installed by all users. A security support document says that the update fixes a vulnerability that was actively exploited. Apple has fixed the issue by improved management of object lifetimes.
Apple has also released iOS and iPadOS 12.5.2, security updates that are available for older devices.

yes and all the android users whinge so much about apple. Lucky if they get 1 update
They get browser updates from the Google Play Store separate from OS updates so better method since it's smaller, quicker and without downtime from rebooting or bricking like the guy above who ended up in recovery mode. That's something people are pushing for Apple to adopt.
Been updating my iOS devices for 11 years now, no bricked devices yet. 🤔

It was probably cuz I went through iTunes, but it was still bigger than normal.
That's the size of a full firmware. Wonder if compromised devices require the full firmware overwrite vs update.

It feels as though they'll be up to 14.11.0 before they're finished with this one, or they'll just stop for the next major version, and 14.x will be buggy forever.
