Maybe I have dumb mode turned on in my iPhone 6s (or in my brain), but it always irks me that when an update comes along I click on the Download & Install button, and then after downloading (and preparing the update) it stalls waiting for me to subsequently click on the Install Now button instead of doing everything in one step as implied by the name of the first button I pressed. This is likely my issue, so I'm ready for whatever you can dish out if it solves this irritating issue for me.

EVERY FREAKIN' TIME. Man someone needs to get fired for their quality control with these updates. Damn it, should've waited one more day before updating all my devices yesterday. Some at Apple should really feel ashamed of themselves cause this just tarnishes their image.

No luck. Still takes 3-4 tries to unlock the watch.
I just tested on my iPhone 12 mini. Same thing. It helps to swipe up the Lock Screen, but with 14.6 and earlier iOS versions my Apple Watch would unlock as soon as Face ID authenticated.

If you don’t have a Touch ID phone like most of us this update isn’t really needed
I wouldn't bank on that. It's entirely possible that as yet undisclosed security fixes will be deployed at the same time.

That just seems to be the way it rolls. It's not much of a chore, to be honest.

I love threads like this .... they become a who's who of "I don't have the slightest clue as to what's involved in enterprise software development, and I'm not afraid to let everyone know that with numpty comments that will live on in the interwebs, forever"

I don’t even get why the “unlock iphone with apple watch” feature was implemented on touch id iphones in the first place. It wasn’t necessary to have it on those devices. It was only necessary on face id iphones because the user’s face isn’t recognized while wearing a mask. No problem unlocking touch id iphones while wearing a mask.

This wasn't created specifically because of the masks. This also benefits users that use gloves and Touch ID. This would have been welcomed back in the day when I had a Touch ID iPhone and wore gloves in the winter. (Gloves had capacitive touch.)

I don't think this is for the "Unlock iPhone with Apple Watch" feature. This is the feature that will unlock your Apple Watch if you're wearing it when you unlock your iPhone, so you don't need to put your pin into your Apple Watch.

The feature doesn't have anything to do with the 14.5 feature that lets you unlock iPhone with Apple Watch if you're wearing a face mask.

I think if you leave it you'll get the install overnight (and maybe even not the next night), but that's not fast enough. :)

A lot of the world wears gloves in winter. It was an easy addition that helped a lot of people. (I'm assuming it actually exists; I haven't used a Touch ID iPhone in a while.)

I imagined a .1 update was probable, however, the question many of us have is: does this security patch fix Pegassus vulnerability? Thank you

But my iPad Pro does it in one step (i.e. everything at the same time) so why not my iPhone? I'll often kick off an update between waking up and leaving for work in the morning and I have to keep checking the phone to see if Install Now is ready to press. The phone should do the same thing as the iPad - the phone (or my setup of it) is doing something stupid.

That's not my experience with the iPad Pro or iPhone -- I have to press "Install Now" on all of them after they're done "preparing" an update.

And I agree with your original point. My MacBook will auto reboot 60 seconds after it's ready to install with no intervention once I tell it to start downloading. I don't understand why iOS/iPadOS doesn't work this way, as well.

That's really disappointing. It's so sporadic on my iPhone 12 mini now. Maybe the watch itself needs an update. I deeply regret updating my apple watch to watchos 7.6
