A Kindle killer has to have eInk.

People who use the Kindle and other ebook readers don't use it because they want a high tech gadget with lots of options, they use one because the eink technology allows for easy reading. You could buy and read ebooks on the iPad but the glossy and backlit display will be far worse on your eyes.

People who want color, video and so on don't buy a Kindle, people who are avid readers do.

******** this whole "LCD is bad for your eyes" crap is not founded on any comparable study. Again.. there are millions working on LCD screens all day, and I don't see glasses maker stock prices going up lately..

Granted e-ink is easy to read, but nowhere near a killer feature of an e-book reader. The killer feature is the battery life..

I just want to point out that the iPad with 3G seems to indicated that it has the same GPS capabilities as the iPhone 3GS, according to the Tech Specs. Of course we don't know what chips are in there, but they're denoted in the same way on the tech specs page.

People say this is a netbook killer.

File system: no.
Multi tasking: no.
Flash support: no.
Physical keyboard: no.
Cheaper: Hell no.

Netbooks are fine.

Yes, netbooks are fine. For the 2% of the population that is willing to put up with their tradeoffs.

Apple doesn't care about netbooks, isn't trying to crush netbooks, they're trying to get the vast majority who will never, ever buy a netbook. Netbooks that are cheaper than $500 are either underpowered or "under-screened" for everything except... the things that this can do in a much better physical package.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_netbooks

The lightest 10-inch netbooks weight almost a pound more than this. Most weigh closer to, or more than two pounds more. That is huge for those of us who want our portable to actually be portable. Weight. Sucks. People hate weight.

All of your "no"s above are either things that the average person doesn't care about, or they are wrong (or not yet known). As others have pointed out, this is exactly the same chatter that greeted the launches of the iPod and iPhone, and--shockingly--the tiny nerd market that is willing to put up with a netbook (mostly as a badge of "cool") is an extraordinarily poor indicator of what most people actually want or need. No offense intended of course, but it's just the way it is.

TOTALLY agree. I think this iPad is a real cop-out. I REALLY want a new toy (I have just over £3,200 in my "fun stuff" savings account) but, as someone who has an iPhone and a MBP (like a large number of Apple users), I just don't see when I'd want this. The iPhone is more portable and the MBP does things better.

No multitasking, no flash... well, all the things that people are no doubt moaning about all over these forums, make this - very unfortunately - a no buy for me.

Seriously, go watch the video on Apple.com - if you want the best tech toy in the world - this is it - I'm in no doubt after watching that video.

At least have an open mind enough to go watch that, because you know that love you have for the iPhone - this looks like that X10!

This is gonna take a week or two to soak in but when it does don't lock you into a 'downer' position on this without giving it a fair shot.

b.u.l.l.s.h.i.t. this whole "LCD is bad for your eyes" crap is not founded on any comparable study. Again.. there are millions working on LCD screens all day, and I don't see glasses maker stock prices going up lately..

Well, I have been reading ebooks since 1998 and I certainly felt the strain a lot, thats why I decided to get a Kindle, my eyes are a lot better now.
I am sure lots of people feel likewise.

Flash? Flash is (thank God) dead! Html5 will handle everything from games to video, etc. Plugins mean the Browser is at a fault. Plugins must be extinguished. See:
http://www.youtube.com/html5
Hmm, I wonder if Flash is really dead. It could even be growing on the business side. Just today I heard about SAS adopting Flex and I also noticed that some companies are moving (internally) from web portals (e.g. WebSphere or SharePoint) to flex for their rich internet apps.

Then there are all those kid-related sites that use flash which you cannot see on an iPad.

I can understand that Apple does not want to support Flash. They are just protecting the fact that apps for iPhone are exclusively for iPhone. But such a choice at this time looks like hurting them in terms of internet access on iPhone OS based systems.

For $30/month I would rather buy a nice bottle of wine and a book to read out on my patio. The last thing i need is yet *another* internet-related bill.

You do realize it's optional, don't you? Not only that, you can turn the 3G on and be charged only when you need it. No contract.

10 hours is not even enough for most of the long haul flights I do. I was hoping the iPad would be much more compelling - I guess I'll be getting a Kindle instead.

So on a long haul flight you'd watch 10 hours of video.. straight? So you wouldn't eat, sleep a little bit, chat to the hostess, watch 1 movie, sleep some more, watch another movie. You'd just get on a plane and watch movies from take off to landing? Come on? What laptop does 10 hours? What any device does 10 hours? Sometimes I think you guys are just making up these obstacles.... my god if you sleep for 8 hours a day, spend two hours eating and getting ready for your day that only leaves 10 hours left in the day........

Odd size to carry around: too big for a pocket . . . if you have to carry a bag for it, might as well have a MB/MBP with the full OS. With a 3G dongle you've got more than the iPad offers.

Are people going to carry this and an iPhone? Why not allow the iPad to make calls and have an iChat camera.

Looks nice, but seems to be a prototype . . . . future version will surely offer more.

Well said... My thoughts exactly.

It think this could be the beginning of something very cool, but at the moment it seems to be surprisingly limited.

I am an academic, so unless I can download and view pdf documents (i.e. scholarly articles in pdf format from major journals) the iPad is useless to me. Is there a way to download and view pdf documents, or can I only view them in safari?

The iPad needs to be able to download and organize files from the internet, movies, pdf, etc. Otherwise, it's not particularly useful for anything beyond casual surfing.

Agreed. Plus, the whole point of a tablet is that you can mark up pdf's, books, student papers, etc. by hand. That's the beauty of using a tablet for education purposes. Otherwise, it's still a fun device--just not that useful for education.

I would REALLY like to know what you use Flash for. I use it for nothing, yet you use it for EVERYTHING.

While I agree that flash has become the bane of the internet...

Flash is actually a really great platform for the people that know how to program for it correctly.

For instance, I have a web based app that is used for restaurants that would be great for the ipad, except that it runs using flash. The app itself is INCREDIBLY lean, and super fast because it wasn't programmed by some hack who doesnt know flash.

that is just one of many examples.

I bet lots of people will buy the iPad because its a cool new gadget (I will), not because its more practical than any of the other devices from Apple (iPhone, Macbook etc)

Don't most all international flights have power ports on the airplane anyhow? What device on the market does more than 10 hours of video. Please tell me.
Not all do unfortunately. I'm not talking about video - I'm talking about reading. I'm sure the iPad may last longer than 10 hours when just reading, but the screen is backlit so presumably power hungry. I borrowed a Kindle on my last trip and it lasted two weeks without recharging.

I can honestly say that I'm not angry about this tablet. It's a cool device that will be my next Touch.......since that's really all this thing is....a giant iPod Touch. :/

But there's nothing revolutionary about it AT ALL. It's just a big Touch period. I was expecting some kind of "ace up the sleeve" from apple on this one but I guess not.

I still want one. But my Touch fills the tablets role just fine for now. So....no real need at the moment.

People can continue to trash talk Flash all they want, but that still doesn't change the fact that Flash is STILL a significant technology and it's abscence from this new tablet is rather embarrasing.

In a world where we are FINALLY appreciating widescreen movies and TV's are ALL moving to a 16:9 format why do we go back to a 4:3 aspect ratio on a brand new 2010 device!!

:(

- Matt

16:9 is so lame on computers. I don't just use my computer to watch movies. I want 16:10!!!

That's why the new iMacs = suck.
