A button is not "adware" it's not advertising anything. Are you saying that if it reverted to the grey circle with white arrow that went before, it would no longer be "adware".
It would be much more subtle and tolerable adware.

They don't "need" to do anything.

Yes a simple arrow like before would be better. Why does it have to say Ping when I don't use Ping? If the Ping logo shows up on every song even if I don't use it... It's adware. If you sign up for the service, fine, let the Ping logo show up. If you don't, that link should be hidden.

For me and anyone else who does not use Ping all it does is add dead links to every song. That is sloppy and messy to me.

> The same reason why you don't want any text buttons in Finder, Address > Book, or Mail applies to iTunes as well.
Nonsense.
What is nonsense? Is it nonsense to assume you would not like any text buttons in Finder, Address Book, Mail?

My problem is this is something free that was added and some people here have way too much nerve to complain about something free. Lucky for Apple MR isn't the main source of their customers.

STD's are free but I don't want one of them either

Has anyone else been having a lot more crashes with iTunes for the last few days? I'm updated but things seem to load really really slowly and I don't make it through all my downloads before it crashes my computer and I have to power down (can't even get to the finder to force quit).

Another thing that isn't working for me is the whole download issue and I could see this snowballing. First, I download the Daily Show, which means I almost always have a download. Second, with all my Apps, there is almost always a few that need to be updated. It seems like a lot of work for Apple's servers and I could see this get worse. I would like it if iTunes would do some of these downloads late at night automatically. Is there anyway to set any of this on a schedule so that I don't start sucking bandwidth every night when I get home and log in?

My kids and my two brothers kids love it, seems to be all the range among the average user of facebook who likes music and has an iDevice. I don't mind it, but although more and more artists are added daily, there's still not enough jazz artists for me to follow... I can see it will grow into something useful and add another dimension to my enjoyment of music.

Right, I've not actually seen a hint of Ping on Facebook or Twitter, no one I know appears to use it.

And most of them do indeed like music and have an iPod/iPhone...

Anyway, the point is iTunes isn't free. I paid 199$ for it and get to pay an extra 60$ a month for it. The iPhone requires iTunes to sync. 3rd party solutions ? You mean the things that import/export to and from iTunes and then use iTunes to sync your iPhone ?

Yeah...

If Apple wants to treat iTunes as some kind of "free gift", then free me from iTunes and let me sync my iPhone using any other software. If you want to force me into iTunes to sync my iPhone, you better darn not shove stuff like Ping into my face if I don't want it. Put it in there for those who do, but at least have the decency of putting an option to remove it completely, not a few terminal hacks to make some parts go away.

Bravo...well said!

I could not agree more. That has been my biggest complaint with my iPhone, iTunes and syncing. Hell, you can't even sync [easily] between 2-3 computers. They should take the word sync out of the iTunes application because I thought sync meant to keep several items all in line [synced] together.

I agree. I would even be satisfied if by default all of the Ping stuff shows up, but there is an option in preferences that lets you choose your sidebar and choose if you want Ping links on the songs or not.

Like I said before if you are not a Ping user all of that stuff is nothing more then dead links filling up your screen. It's ugly and messy.

Well, so far so good with the iTunes 10.0.1 update in fixing the crashes I was having on my PPC PowerMac machine. No crashes here in about 24 hours so far (still knocking on wood). No bug fix was listed for this problem, but from past experience that doesn't mean they didn't fix more bugs than listed. I think Apple is embarrassed to admit they have bugs in their programs except when it relates to 3rd party software (where they can kind of imply maybe it wasn't their fault).

I would be satisfied as well by that. I'd be even more satisfied if they simply made a pop-up on first run telling you about Ping and offering you the option to activate or disable it right there, so then you don't even need to hunt down in the preferences for it and they get their nag screen everytime you upgrade to try to "sell" you into Ping.

I've disabled these buttons & ping sidebar through using this:

Quit iTunes and open Terminal. Paste the following line and hit Enter:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes hide-ping-dropdown 1

Success! The Ping dropdown menu is gone!!!

well done. 10+. too bad macrumours doesn't allow one to assign bonus points to useful postings.

Great. At least some good news :)

Now let's hope that :apple: won't bore up the iOS Game Center into a Social Networking Gaming thing for iTunes 11 called Pong...

Dammit, the Genius Sidebar was a great tool. It enabled me to find artists and songs that I never dreamed of finding. What a waste.

You're assuming that everybody that comes here is a computer genius, not everybody is a computing nerd that signs on here. So friggin' what if I said the colors were removed to keep the bloat down. I never claimed that to be thee reason, it was just my observation. You jumped on me today over something that stupid so you must be bored and are looking for drama. Did I claim to be a coding master here? NO. Since you're equally clueless as to what the reasons are then keep your arrogance to yourself.

It's still ridiculous for you to expect Apple to give you the option to fully remove Ping from iTunes. Just ridiculous.
No one is dictating anything to you, just don't use it. Stop trippin'.

Well I guess Ping isn't as much of a bother to you as you're spewing today since it's too much trouble to leave iTunes beacuse you have to "redo" your music collection. :D

You're pathetic. Let it go.

Cover Art for Audio books

What really has me irritated the book cover art work is gone in the Book folder on iTunes 10 I have hundreds of audiobooks and it is much easier to find a book via the cover art, and then being able to drag and drop a book cover to add the audiobook to my Touch this so much faster and easier then looking down the file columns, highlighting and then dragging it is a real pain.

Personally I have no interest in what other people are listening to, nor do I care to share what I may be listening to. Other people's opinions about music are of no consequence to me. I will never use Ping. Thank goodness there is a terminal command to get rid of the buttons. I also never had any interest in "Genius". It's just a marketing tool and I have never needed suggestion to find things I'm interested in. I wish there were still main window buttons for equalizer, visualizer and disc burning. I used those buttons all the time. They took them away with no option to restore them. All of them replaced with just one button for Genius. I have to use iTunes for my iDevice management. Otherwise I wouldn't use it at all anymore. I don't care if Apple wants to add these marketing tools to their software if people enjoy them, but I think it's despicable to remove other features without the option to restore them in preferences. There's really no excuse for that. I've used Apple for all my computing device needs for 30 years and will continue to, but Apple is not my friend and I do believe they have become quite overbearing in my opinion.

PING? forget it. What happened to privacy anyway? I don't like displaying my name EVERYWHERE for people to see. When it said it would change all my reviews to my name I canceled.

This social media crap is getting ridiculous, what happened to privacy? .

The hordes are too busy consuming to realize they are being consumed.
