Not happy Apple did this. So does anyone know how you can unhide app purchases now in OS11. There is no way to do on phone and now you can't on iTunes.

Makes sense b/c iTunes *should* be focused on content. I'm OK with this. HOWEVER... the other reality is that while the iOS-based App Store works great, it is also a bit less functional and is on a tiny screen. Personally I like the idea of searching on a bigger screen with access to a full keyboard. Makes it easier for me to find new apps! I would even like to see the TV app store on my laptop. Hopefully Apple will spin off the functionality into a stand-alone "iOS App Store" application... but I'm not going to hold my breath.

I guess Apple would rather 100% of people get better performance at the expense of 1% of total users who used that outdated functionality.

I'm all for the 100% getting better performance, but how exactly would spinning off the functionality into a separate app hurt anyone?

If you use the "Apple Configurator 2" app, you can still download and update apps from multiple Apple IDs - as you also could with iTunes.

1. Connect the device with USB

2. Sign in under Account:

3. Choose Update in the menu:

A more detailed description can be found here: http://krypted.com/apple-configurator/upgrade-devices-and-apps-using-apple-configurator-2/

The Apps are downloaded to:
Code:
~/Library/Group Containers/K36BKF7T3D.group.com.apple.configurator/Library/Caches/Assets/TemporaryItems/MobileApps

I can't tell you how much I love you. This is arguably 10x easier than my previous iTunes multi-account workflow anyway.

If you redownload the app, does it not unhide it? Similarly if you re-buy it, it used to tell you that you already bought it.

But it has always been possible to switch accounts and countries on the desktop iTunes. Now it has become completely imposdible to even look at another store beyond the country you're in.
This is a totally stupid move.
a) You still can look at another store beyond the country you're in on your iOS device.
b) You cannot look at any store anymore in iTunes.

Stupid question, what happens to the 40 GB of apps I have stored in my iTunes folder on my Mac? I have installed iTunes 12.7, but that folder is still there.

On chat with apple support now about unhiding app purchases now that they removed app's from iTunes. They have no clue how either. So frustrating!

It removed mine. Not happy!

A local backup doesn't save apps - only what apps you have on the device. When you restore, the apps download from the app store.

The part where the apps where transfered to the computer was during syncing.
Okay but does 12.7 also backup/restore apps data like before. When I restore I expect a fully functional device.

I assume you still see the Apps tab on your device, when it's attached. I wonder if they improved the app manager/arranger aspect, which has always been clunky at best, but still 100x better than trying to organize a hundred apps on the device itself.
If you can still see the Apps tab, I'd be glad if you could point me to it:

Hmm, I wonder how I can get my old, now gone apps onto devices? The only copy of Boardz I have is not downloadable anymore, even as a purchase which is strange.

Edit: you can drag them onto the device, even though there's no App icon. So they removed the UI but kept the functionality, interesting.
Drag from where? The Finder window show the 'Mobile Applications' folder inside the iTunes library?

The old version didn't back up apps. Apps are not stored in the backup. Apps were stored on the local computer, and the backup "backed up" what apps were installed - not the apps themselves. At least that's how I understand it.

I was easily able to install custom ringtones onto my iPhone 7 (iOS11) using iTunes 12.7. I just went to the device in iTunes, under "On My Device" I went to "Tones", and dragged several .m4r ringtone files into the list. All the ringtones copied directly over to my phone. The only weird thing is that there is no way to delete a ring tone from this interface.

Yep, how do we delete ringtones??

"The new iTunes is designed to focus solely on music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and audiobooks, which means there is no built-in App Store."

How will this affect schools using Apple Configurator (or possibly other MDM software), where apps have previously been downloaded to Mac via iTunes, licences have been paid for through an education app store and apps distributed from the Mac? Couldn't find anything online as yet.

(Also, AFAIK, iOS device backups do NOT include apps, only, essentially, iOS settings. Could easily be wrong. :))

Sorry if either point answered already. Found messages list hard to navigate.

Lastly: it's a bit sad when people comment so entirely from their own use perspective, with seemingly little thought for others having different needs. Just saying. (That could be a mistake.)

So just how the heck are those of us, PC or Mac, going to keep local backups for:

- restoring devices when apps aren't on the app store anymore?
- restoring an app when as previously stated, the current version is broken/bad?
- restoring our custom-made ringtones?

I'm so glad I saw this article before I was notified of an update to iTunes.

- You couldn’t do this for the last year. ITunes stopped backing up apps and just backed up their reference and settings
- AFAIK you can’t do this now
- this still works fine as confirmed by many people in the thread

I just downloaded Configurator 2 thanks to @rlarsen_eu , and it does everything iTunes used to with respect to those things and more. I can choose apps to install that I haven't even downloaded to my mac, in one step.

Not sure what will happen when iOS 11 drops, but actually, this is better than before. If only I knew about it before the panic of "CRAP WHAT ABOUT MY REGION LOCKED APPS FROM BACK HOME?!?" this morning when 12.7 auto-installed.

If you're set for automatic downloads any new app is installed on all devices.
You're missing the point. Up until now he could download the app once from Apple's servers, and then install it onto each device from iTunes. Now each device will need to download the app from Apple's servers. So if the app is 500MB and he wants it on 4 devices it used to be 1 x 500MB download and 4 local installs. Now it's 4 x 500MB downloads. As more and more ISPs look to implement data caps this becomes an issue.

Local backup doesn't store the apps in the backup itself because they are already in your iTunes library and get copied from there - that's the bit that's now taken away. The sync happens as part of the restore.

This is a good move, it was getting a little cluttered in iTunes!

It may be a good move but it was atrociously executed leaving a lot of "loyal" customers unsure how to proceed regarding iDevice syncing and backups. Part of the whole "ease of use" concept is communicating with customers so they always feel comfortable using the product. I for one have no idea how to proceed at this point as far as managing my iDevices if I don't want to do it over iCloud.

Great decision Apple. Who downloads iOS apps on their Mac anyway?
I read news and reviews about apps frequently on my Mac. I use my Mac to search for apps with Google. So, how do I proceed now when I have found an article pointing to the iOS App Store in Safari on the Mac? Before, I just had to click on the link in the web browser and it would take me right to the App Store in iTunes. Now I have to grab my phone, open the App Store app, wait for the App store to load, click on the search box, wait for the search box to load, type in the name of the app and hit search.

Take any app developer's website viewed on a Mac or PC. They almost invariably have button labelled 'Get iPhone app' which takes you to the web version of the App Store with one further click transporting you to the App Store in iTunes (half of the time this even happens automatically).

Moreover, switching between different stores (aka countries) to download app updates is much easier in iTunes than on iOS. I can get my various AppleIDs filled with with a few keystrokes via TextExpander and typing a complex password via a real keyboard is easily ten times faster than typing it on iOS.

Anything that removes bloat from iTunes is good for me.
You meant: Anything that feels like removing bloat from iTunes is good for you.

You could already remove the Apps section from the dropdown menu. But I guess this also removes the App Store tab in iTunes preferences. What this move really does remove is some of the complaints about iTunes bloat. That I definitely see as a positive.

See where it says "File Sharing"? You can use that now to transfer data to and from apps.
Thanks.
