With all the beta and GM leaks no one saw this one coming. So at least Tim got one good surprise on us all

Maybe that's something all the rumor mongers should focus on in future, trying to dig out what the software changes are when there's no public beta the rollout is the public beta...

The way Apple has covertly gone about this change is really slimy given how long iTunes has been the heart of everything media for everything Apple and how many millions of people DO still use iTunes to curate their apps and manage devices. Apple could have given users a heads up rather than craming the upgrade down user's throats before they were prepared. Clearly they were too busy leaking info about the new ATV 4K. Fortunately I'm a bit lazy about updating so I read about the change before I had a chance.

Even in the wake of this rug pulled from under us, Apple doesn't even bother to post any kind of support note that I can easily find on whether or not or how to sync devices with a Mac (or Windows for that matter since we are talking about iTunes). The only "sync" support note I see is one dated from last July and pictures the previous version of iTunes.

So at least on the face of it it seems this is Apple's passive aggressive way of telling people:

1. We are depreciating Macs usefulness as a hub
2. Go buy a damn iCloud subscription
3. Stop loading your devices with content you didn't buy from us

Is the "walled garden" is being converted into a prison where we'll all be wearing Apple striped garb soon? I love my Apple products but iTunes has been the nerve center for media content for over a decade. And while we are all focused on Apple's shiny new toys it sends its gendarmes in to clear out out stuff from our house and when we return told to leave with no help from Apple on where to go from here. Zero on the style scale. If Apple wants to slim down iTunes fine but even when Aperture and Photos were going the way of the dodo bird Apple gave us ample time to prepare. To paraphrase Schiller: great customer service my ass.

People are saying this is a good thing, they don’t realise the lost functionality. If they want to improve iTunes performance nd make it less cluttered, completely removing features like this isn’t the answer. I agree with it, but I also think there should be another application for syncing devices and managing apps.

This is to help make way for iTunes on the windows store where everything is incredibly weak and dumbed-down.

Apple wants a piece of the windows 10 S pie (RT 2.0) even though nobody else wants it.

goto itunes and select on my device on the left then click on tones then on your mac drag and drop the tones you created into the tones section on your device it will copy them over to your device.

The same goes for any books you have that isnt brought.
NO, you cannot drag as you described. Obviously you have not tried it yourself.

What is the above supposed to show? The "Applications" section isn't clickable for me, using iOS 10.2.1. Thanks.
[doublepost=1505289248][/doublepost]

Curious about this as well.
I’m not sure why that is not clickable but just so you know (and anyone else who may have concerns) it is ok to upgrade to iOS 10.3.3 and still use ALL your 32Bit apps no longer available as of iOS 11 (in case I didn’t make that clear). But iOS 10.3.3 is the last iOS that will allow all those 32Bit apps to work.

We own and have purchased 2,957 apps. When Apple decides that 65% of your purchases simply won’t work on your new $1,500 iPad Pro? Yeah that’s a real big deal in my book! I bought the 512GB so I could have everything on one device finally AND still have room for my music and 20 or so movies etc.

We’re a record company and travel a lot. The DJ portion alone is 97GB. So to finally have everything on one device on 23 hour flights to Australia and other destinations was great... until they told me my favorite apps not only WON’T work but we’re going to erase them for you too?

All I was wanting was a warning box:
“If you continue and click backup it WILL erase your very well organized setup AND you won’t get to see where everything was IF you want to go back to 10.3.3 because THIS will be your backup. So click cancel now if you’re NOT ok with loosing everything not 64bit”

Up through 10.3.3 you could click APPLICATIONS in general-> about and see what will not work then decide. But with iOS 11 it just removed the 32bit without warning.

I’m sorry to hear your APPLICATIONS doesn’t click to show the list but trust me you CAN safely update all the way to 10.3.3 and then you’ll see the list (10.3.2 as well)

Hope that helps? <Grin>

Moving on to new things is one thing. Taking away functionality or ability to manage or use apps I have purchased and hardware I have purchased that have no problems other than being older is basically robbery of all the money I've spent.
This is one of the rottenest things they've ever done. Ways to trim the bloat on iTunes did not need to be stripping me of my ability to manage and use almost 10 years of app purchases over a variety of devices. Many apps were removed both from the store and then no longer appeared in my "past purchases". Taking away things I bought just because they hadn't been sold in a long time. My 2nd Gen iPod Touch works just as well today as it did when I bought it. I also need to download apps to my Mac to get them onto my iPad. "Oh well screw you buy something new and move into the future" say the shills. Probably not a future with Apple, and I've been there with them since the 70's.

Moving into the future is great but stealing away what I have paid for isn't.

Whilst many people don't backup everything to their Mac, some of us do. I appreciate the need to streamline / simplify iTunes, but it would be a shame to lose the ability to save iOS apps to the Mac and restore from there, as it can save a lot of time on restoring older devices and setting up new ones. Also its quicker for those with multiple devices - especially if they are in a slow internet area.

I have submitted a feature request - A stand alone app for saving and restoring iOS Apps. Those of you who want to retain this functionality should also send in a request to Apple. If they get many requests, they may do it.

How about trying syncios?

I use it sometimes to get photos off on ipad where photos are not in camera roll.

Not tried backing up apps with sync ios as no longer have an iphone I cannot test.

The iBooks app? I've certainly added plenty of my own epub's and PDF's to it.
That’s not his concern. (Why won’t people actually read what people concerns are instead of just whipping out a snippy answer?)

I understand your actual concern. If everything is “don’t connect to your computer now what?” And you’re right bye bye non purchases.

The good news is yes you still can connect you device to any Mac and everything works as it did.

The ONLY thing they changed is the option of:
iTunes-> store-> purchases-> APPS

That is what they removed in iTunes 12.7. Everything else is asbit was on physical hard copy backups.

The only reason THAT removal is a pain is because now I can’t click: “not on this backup” and ADD what was purchased from an iOS device to INCLUDE in this hard copy.

The good news there is;
If you connect a device to your computer it will transfer all missing iOS apps not included in your hard copy backup on your Mac. You just can’t do this WITHOUT a device connected. That’s what option they removed.

As far as adding stuff (non purchased music, books, ringtones, etc..) that all remains the same. Just connect the device and add whatever the he’ll you want... EXCEPT 32Bit apps!!! That is now NOT an option with iOS 11 as I pointed out in my post.

To still use your 32Bit apps you’ll need to stop at 10.3.3. Sorry. But 10.3.3 wit <LOL> work with iTunes 12.7 - no problem.

I know this is confusing so if you have questions or need more personal details email me. I’ll be happy to assist as this is quite messy and a bit confusing:

Wow. I look at apps and decide what to buy on my nice big Mac screen. I arrange them on my Mac and sync to my phone. Stupid, thoughtless, pointless, not at all customer-centric decision. I cannot fathom at what point that became a good idea in someone's mind. I guess my dwindling interest in anything Apple is not just coincidence.

I was the same. I guess I'll just be buying/downloading fewer apps now.

I have a complicated history of Apple IDs (not by choice), meaning I've been forced into having 4 iCloud accounts that are not mergeable. It's a completely unmanageable mess that barely works, and Apple goes out of its way to make dealing with multiple accounts difficult (especially on iOS), actively encourages poor security practices, none of the family sharing stuff works properly, Genius bar was absolutely no help on it, so I want to stay as far away from anything to do with iCloud as possible.

Has anyone using 12.7 did a full backup via USB, then a full restore to an iPhone or iPad? We cannot use iCloud for backups here, only local via iTunes. Will we lose this function?

I guess Apple would rather 100% of people get better performance at the expense of 1% of total users who used that outdated functionality.

What you forget is its always good to have a backup, some of us like local storage, which in itself is backed up locally. Even the great Apple who loves tech and has its Apple Pay system still keeps the old fashioned mechanical credit card carbon copy devices in its stores (which were used recently). So backup systems are good however old fashioned.

I don't get this thread.

To add ringtones and old apps, just find the files and drag them to the phone in iTunes.
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201593

If you want to delete a custom ringtone, in phone summary tick "Manually manage music and videos" then go to the ringtones section and simply delete the ones you don't want.

The functions to sync and backup phones are still there.

I ticked that option and can't delete ringtones.

They've just removed the "app" tab, not the backup functions.

I ticked that option and can't delete ringtones.
Seems to work for me (High Sierra, iTunes 12.7, iPhone 6S). I go to "tones" on my phone in iTunes and I can untick any, and I can right (ctrl) click and select "delete from library".

Uh, what does that say about adding content to apps on the phone through itunes? I use iTunes on my Windows PC to load tv shows and movies to the VLC app. Guess I won't ever be updating that .exe

Yes I know that but a full local backup saved apps and data - does 12.7 affect that?
Ah - good question. I guess you mean ... does it still back up the apps or is it like an iCloud backup whereby it only saves the app names and hence forces them to be re-downloaded? I'm not willing to test this :). However, next time an app updates on my phone I'll run a backup and sync and see if it updates the .ipa file on my laptop.
