Does anyone know why this is happening? Is it karma? I've been a good boy lately...

I noticed this happened to me as well, but found out I had iTunes open on another user. Once I closed iTunes on the other user, it installed no problem.

Hey aegisdesign,

Your strategy worked for me for all the podcasts that were already on my hard drive, and that made me really excited, but when I downloaded a new podcast, it went straight into my main library. Meanewhile, the others I'd fixed stayed nicely in the Podcast section. Did I do something wrong? When new podcasts download to your Mac, do they stay within the Podcasts section?

Thanks 🙂

That could be a flaw in my plan there 🙂

I've not downloaded a new podcast yet.

You know, I think I'll go back to iTunes 4.9. It's nicer. I don't use smartlists very much so nested smartlists are of no use to me. Podcasts however worked better it seems and the UI in 5.0 is driving me nuts.

What the heck is up with iTunes 5 copying a ton of my songs back over to my iPod?!? But only AAC files....

The only MAJOR change I made before syncing up my iPod for the first time with iTunes 5 was consolidating my playlists.

I think it looks nice. The first place we got this look was in the System Preferences in Panther IIRC. I like it.
Is it possible that we could see it in a smaller update? (10.4.3 for example..)

The only resemblance is that they took the line out between the title bar and the toolbar. The colour, corners, behaviour, antialiasing, selection, widgets, icons, fonts, search bars and gradients are completely different.

I've said this many times before, but it always bears repeating...

This is really starting tp p*** me off. I browsed the new iTunes pages at apple.com and still found no mention of gapless playback. Apple doesn't freaking care. It's pathetic. This is a feature that should have been in iTunes 2 at the latest so that those of us who really care about our music can enjoy albums without jarring gaps of silence between tracks. Now we have iTunes 5, and presumably it still isn't there.

What about when you said the Apple employees working on iTunes/iPod were all music lovers, Steve? Sounds like a lie to me. Nothing but empty hype. People who really care about music would not stand for such shoddy playback.

We all love to trumpet the fact that Apple is the company that pays attention to detail. I call BS in this case. This is one detail that's been glaringly neglected time and time again. Surely one Apple engineer realizes this is a problem and would like to fix it? It's not that difficult - numerous solutions exist. If Winamp can do it, why not iTunes? And don't get me started on iPod...

I'll go ahead and give it a try (nothing keeping me on 4.9), but I have zero hope that it was added and simply not mentioned. Apple does not always pay attention to detail - in the case of their music products they seem to only pay attention to what's hip or cool. I'm getting sick of it. 😡

If any competitor's product even approached the ease of use and integration between iTunes and iPod, I'd jump ship in a second and replace my stolen iPod with something else. As it is, I keep waiting for the new generation of iPod that won't mangle my favorite albums. Seems it won't happen any time soon.

And before anyone replies, the following are not acceptable solutions:
  • Cross-fading
  • Ripping a whole CD as one big track

If a 20-year-old CD player can play without gaps and skip tracks, I want my state of the art jukebox software and device to do it too. Is that really too much to ask?

Unfortunately the masses don't care (they just want to shuffle), so Apple's ears are (tone) deaf to this request. What about the details, Apple?

</rant>

There, that felt good. 😀

Is there something "wrong" with my, iTunes then? Because I've never noticed a gap in between songs since 4.8.

Odd, Windows on my laptop asked me to restart, but on my desktop it didn't. I didn't restart the laptop since I'm in the middle of some work, but iTunes seems to be working fine on it anyway.

Not my desktop. No reboot. Nice.

I think the 5.0 interface is better than 4.9. They should give all the iApps and Safari this look. There's always been differences between the apps, but now this is too much. Mail, Safari and iTunes look very weird together.
I'm guessing they were thinking about Windows users as well with this design, or maybe it's simply the look we'll be seeing in iLife '06.

Finally folders in iTunes!! I can't believe how we used iTunes without them.

It's a worrying trend. Add nested folders to an app - the one feature most people want, but screw up the rest of the app in some random way and add new a UI element like transparent windows or square corners. Happened in iPhoto5, happening now in iTunes5. I'd like to say it's happening in Finder too but they're just screwing that up slowly enough that you barely notice.

And making things easy for Windows users by making your applications as dull as the Windows UI is a kick in the balls to people who chose the MacOS interface. I liked being able to hide the drawer in Mail and position it left or right. Now I've that dumb blue box on the left.

The search bar (or whatever it's called) is pretty neat as well.

Except they don't let you save your searches as a Smart Playlist like every other app they've added the searchbar to - Finder, Spotlight, Mail... Doh!

gorgeous

I love the new design. Although I don't know if I will ever have much use for the folders. The new interface is a much needed refresher.

come someone confirm if this requires a restart?
It doesn't. (except I installed it with the Quicktime 7.0.2 update, and I did have to restart.) Wow, this post seems useless now.

Bedawyn is a happy happy cat. This is the first thing Apple's done in years that's really pleased me. (Well, the black Nano would make me drool, except I'm refusing to look in that direction since my current iPod does the job fine already.)

The top title bar does look a bit odd, but I'm already getting accustomed to it. And the whole thing does look a bit ... unfinished. More like shareware than Appleware. But even with those drawbacks, it's still much better than the old look. I always hated the brushed metal, and the wasted space, and the clutter, and the rounded corners. This looks much cleaner and simpler, much crisper -- that's the thing I miss most about OS 9, the crisper interface. And now, finally, I can read my playlists properly, without feeling like I'm peering at them through a smudged window.

Plus, if I decide to stick with iPodderX (still wavering), I'll be able to get rid of the unneeded purple icon. And, of course, I'm still doing the happy dance over the nested folders. And finally, the whole thing runs so much more smoothly and quickly! I have over 3000 songs and 14 GB in my library, and on my older machine it was definitely bogging down. Rainbows every other minute -- no more! (Well, at least in one short evening's use. Cross my fingers!) Finally, it seems like Apple may be remembering that functionality needs to come first, before memory-hogging gimmicks. I may regain my faith after all. 🙂

As for the mini player, my first reaction to the new look was to wonder if my old Soundjam skins would work now. Be lovely if they did. *g*

a new flaw?

Has anyone tried the new search feature?

Try searching for an artist then click "Name"... click the "x" and do your search again... it is still searching the "Name" but it reads "All"...

this is pretty bad... I need to be hired as a beta tester!!!! jk

I just hate when you get your shiney new software and it has bugs you notice in the first 5 minutes

You are right, I have the same bug occuring. Here is to iTunes 5.1 😀

Why oh why is the display bar two different colors? It's hard to read.

Damn you MacNut, I didn't realize there were two colors until you mentioned something 🙁

The changes seem nice, but I don't really realize that much of a change overall. I guess the system itself has probably been improved, but usability is about the same to me.

Not impressed with the new aesthetics, looks kind of plasticky(new word?) and cheap ( yes it's free ), but it still works so I like it.

Its ok but....

How about selecting multiple playlists. Like if I want to stick all my Pink Floyd playlists into a folder I have to do them one at a time. Folders are nice, but the re-organization is a pain! The new design is ok, but the plastic look is hard to adjust too... I wonder if apple though of people like me with broken monitors where the two tone info box becomes unreadable when one's monitor displays too much yellow? Almost have enough for that G5! (And thank goodness I have an iTunes 4 installer on my drive, not worth the upgrade ATM)

Grouped playlists: CHECK!
Multiple Artists: ERRRR!
Multiple Albums: ERRR!

Common Apple! I thought they were going to take care of these major overlooks. 5 major generations of iTunes and they still haven't got it.

Countless songs appear on more than one album. The way iTunes is set up now, you have to choose which album you want it to be on, even though you might have both albums on your iTunes.

The same goes for artists. Many many songs are collaborations of two or more artists. There's no way to add both artist's names to the song without creating a new artist category labeled with both names. There's a simple fix for this, let's have it!

Add multiple genres to that list...I want to classify somethings as "Soundtrack" and "Rock," for instance so the song shows up under both categories.

You're right ... and adding fuel to the argument is that iPhoto lets you select multiple albums to move into a folder. For the sake of not only usability but consistency across iApps, they should probably correct this oversight.

That can be solved by a potential soundtrack box that you can tick and then associate with a soundtrack album ...
