The iTunes 5.0 UI expanded looks UGLY.

Shrunk it looks ALRIGHT.

Nonetheless, it will take me a long time to get used to this UI. Who am I kidding, I like the iTunes Widget UI BETTER.

Seriously, can't Apples iTunes UI team come up with changeable skins or something, or other options. Can I have the iTunes widget UI as my only iTunes skin.

This sucks, looks to me that iTunes 5 is going to hide in the dock a lot. ;) :p :)

Need a hack quick someone, pleased. :)

I get the impression there are too many groups in Apple just doing their own thing and nobody with the responsibility to look at the overall picture and ask questions like 'Why is that blue, when it's grey here? Why does this have round corners and this square?'.

If you place Mail.app ontop of iTunes 5.0 window expanded, you will see the corners of iTunes 5.0 is not as rounded.

I predict an update soon that will fix this issue. :p

Thus it looks odd and out of place. Not used to a square UI window in Mac OS X. :)

On on second note, I HATE the information window, it looks too ugly. Looks like an intern at the iTunues GUI dept. ;)

GAPLESS PLAY:

This is how Apple can do it. Each song will be listed as normal single tracks - none of this join all songs as a single track junk. You then select the songs you want to join for gapless play and it's shown in itunes as some graphic - maybe it will be highlighted or underlined.

When you play these songs as an album in album order - they will be gapless.

When you play the songs in shuffle mood they will nolonger have gapless play.

Just my 2 cents. What do I know? I've been using itunes since day one and have been waiting for this feature since then.

Once they do this, they should add tabbed browing to ichat, but that's a whole other story.....

You sir are a frigging genius. Please tell Apple about this, I really want a good implementation of gapless playback without resorting to the 'one-track' hack.

Oh Jeez. Still Carbon. They'll have to convert it to Cocoa to compile it for Intel. I was hoping v5 would have been it.
Carbon apps run on Intel. It's only programs built with Metrowerks tools that have major trouble.

I'm being picky now but, the gap between the volume slider and the LCD display isn't the same as the gap between the LCD display and the search box. The lack of symmetry was throwing me off.

That gap is where the chapter selector appears when playing podcasts that have them.

My bet is on Safari being the next app to get plasticised.

Mine already is. Run Safaricon on it and you can select between Metal, Aqua or Unified (that's plastic's proper name).

aha. Couldn't they enlarge the search box when not playing podcasts though?

Get a 30" display and stretch iTunes across its width, and you won't even notice it ;)

Ah, ok. I still can't see them going forward with a carbon app into the Intel era though. All the interesting changes in the last few years have been to Cocoa and Core.

Apple announced iTunes 5.0 today. The updated version of Apple's popular jukebox software provides many long requested features. These include:

- Streamlined design
- Smart Shuffle
- Can organize playlists into folders
- Search bar
- Windows users can sync with Outlook and Outlook Express
- Parental controls for iTunes Music Store
- Album Reviews

iTunes 5 will be available today.
ya the folders are nice, but other wise I give it a big YAWN!

Missing feature...

You know what I'm really really missing from iTunes? The ability to sync songs to one's iPod at a lower quality codec/bitrate.

I encode all my CDs onto my PowerMac G5 in Apple Lossless format - not really for the sound quality but more or less to serve as a full-quality backup should the original physical CD be lost, stolen, or destroyed.

Now, I also like all my music to fit on my 3G 40GB iPod. If I had everything encoded at 128kb AAC (or even 192kb) I could do this... but alas all my stuff is in Apple Lossless and my iPod fills up too damn quickly with about 1/4 of my music collection rather than 100% like it potentially could.

Now, I could make AAC encodings from the ALAC ones, but that would take just too much time. What I'd like to see iTunes offer is the ability to automagically transcode my ALAC-format tracks down to something smaller of my choosing (such as 128kb AAC) as it syncs them to my iPod.

Obviously, the syncing will take much longer as it transcodes in real time, but it's a one-time-job and it's a feature that's worth the extra syncing time for me.

The placement of some things is a tad...strange.

Like the volume controller when iTunes is full size. And the screen that displays the song info while playing now looks a bit cluttered and 'stacked'...

oh well.

On the plus side, it's more streamlined, a bit faster, and at least the brushed metal is gone.

ok Apple...this is getting rediculous

From the supposed "leaders" in user interface, I now have 3 distinct looks to my applications, which quite frankly renders my user interface cluttered and disorganized. One of my favorite things about the apple user interface is the clean, unobtrusive look and feel.

Now, however, the look and feel is feeling like a tattered set of high-school term papers...each with a pathetic "best attempt" at its own look...

GET IT STRAIGHT APPLE...PICK A FREAKING COMMON UI LOOK AND GO WITH IT!!!!!

sheesh

I mean, does anyone besides me look over at the scroll bar with the residual aqua UI and think...something here just doesnt belong

thats annoying how podcasts show up in the itunes library

i dont want to go from listening music to listening about sports or mac news

video playback problem, etc.

Also, my next track button is broken. As in, it just restarts the current track. Anyone else have this prob?

no. my next button works fine.

i notice a problem with video playback, though. it seems that if videos are set to play in a separate window, the videos won't open automatically as play advances to a video track (either on its own, or as a result of the next track button or right arrow being pushed).

i can get the videos to open by clicking the arrow at the right side of the track info pane while the track is playing, or by clicking on the album artwork window.

i also think showing/hiding album artwork is unintuitive--i expected to be able to click or drag the title bar of that pane to get rid of it, but the only way to do that is select "hide artwork" from the edit menu.

right now, i don't see any shared music on my network, which is highly unusual, but i can't say for sure whether it's because of itunes 5.

otherwise, i like the interface fine (i always disliked the wasted space of the brushed metal designs), and also think performance seems snappier.

But if you did care about music as much as some of us you would rip the album into one track and also have it seperated as multiple tracks also. All of my Eno, Vangelis, Miles, Boards of Canada, Classical, Floyd, Radiohead, Tortoise, Aphex Twin, etc. are done like this. B/C I care enough about music to give myself multiple choices. This IS a solution to the problem. I try not to rely on others to solve my problems.
And if you REALLY care about music iTunes and the iPod are not your best means to listen to it anyway........you need to go high end with all your equipment. That means full quality cd's with a high end stereo system and a top of the line amplifier into some awesome headphones and speakers.
Gapless playback would be a great bonus, but it's not a necessity.

You really have to be joking me! Ripping an album twice just so you can have the best of both worlds. In otherwords gapless playback!

I agree with "BankShot"! If a 20 year old CD player can do gapless playback why the hell can't iTunes! If WMP on Windows can why can Apple on iTunes. If Creative can do it with their mp3 players, why can't iPod!

This is the biggest P.I.T.A. about the whole iTunes / iPod product line. Don't get me started on recording thou!
