I'm really happy about this automatic bit-rate conversion feature. My immense Apple Lossless library became too fat for even my 120 iPod Classic.

Rock on

People "are perfectly happy" because they don't know any better. You can't possibly hope to make the claim that opinion overrides facts.

Excuse me? Facts?

Your opinion is that the artifacts are "very bad."
My opinion is that the artifacts are "acceptable."

Since when did your opinion become a "fact" while mine is just an opinion? I'm glad you think so highly of yourself, but your opinion not a fact. It's just another opinion, same as mine.

Looks like they changed the "Applications" section name to "Apps". Makes sense since Apple practically invented the word "Apps".

Are they serious about not including artwork for the converted music files?

That's... that's just silly.

So, honest question: outside of movies, why would anyone need over 16GB?
You're kidding, right? I can top 16GB with just 10 artists in my library, and there are many who have much larger libraries than mine! Mine isn't even lossless.

No it will NOT "320kbps songs" the recompession is done on the fly as the songs are downloading to the iPod/iPhone/iPad. The copy on the computer remains unchanged.

Why do it? My iTues library is mostly in Apple Lossless and takes way more than 100GB of space. Going to AAC will alow my to fit a ton more music in the iPod but also allow be to hear full CD quality at more on the stereo system.

So you don't really think I'll take a huge hit in quality by playing 128kbps in my standard car radio, as compared to my 320kbps?

I'm not trying to be snooty, I'm just curious.

I'll start re-ripping my entire CD collection to lossless tonight. Will take a while, but will be worth it. Problem solved, home audio quality improves. Win (though sometimes winning takes work).

I did this a while back. Once you go lossless you'll never go back. It makes the biggest difference on busy music. One man singing with his guitar... 256k would sound just fine. Dragonforce, Delerium, Conjure One, you can here the difference between lossless and 256k.

I even put the lossless music on my 32GB iPod Touch. I can fit about 170 albums on it that way. When I tire of some of them, I cycle them out.

My "fact" was that it creates artifacts. They are not acceptable, if an artifact exists, you hear it and it doesn't sound nice.

That was from a FAQ document for the ipod shuffle. We don't know exactly how this is handled on the iPhone/iPods yet. I imagine it will still show the artwork like always, but it might no longer be embedded in the file itself.

Lossless FTW!

Correction: my jailbroken iPod Touch is syncing now. I had to reboot my laptop for some reason, but it is working now. Whew.

Trying the "Convert to 128kbps..." option now. Taking a while, obviously, since it looks like it has to convert about 1000 tracks.

It's not syncing my jailbroken iPod touch. It's not even showing up in iTunes anymore. Back to 9.0.3 for me when I get home to my SuperDuper backup.

my 3.1.2 jailbroken iPhone 3G syncs perfectly fine

well, 9.1 brought back my genius mixes that had disappeared in 9.0.something and i failed to make reappear :)

Here is a screenshot of the new books section, I just dragged a free .epub book from the internet into my library and it appeared. However, it is organisation only, so I can't actually read the book inside itunes, like you can with music, video and podcasts.

VERY SLICK!.

I was hoping I could use the book section to organize some pdf books I had, looks like this isn't the case...

Convert PDFs to ePub.

iTunes 9.1 Config confirms iPad Remote

The preferences in iTunes 9.1 has the following checkbox under "Devices"

"Look for iPod touch, iPhone and iPad Remotes"

I'm sure that the current iPhone Remote app works for the iPad — but it sounds like the iPad might become the best iTunes/Apple TV remote in the Living Room.

Artwork when converting

Can someone confirm if converting to 128kbps AAC when syncing will strip out your artwork? That would be stupid. Especially for the iPad or iPhone.

It says it does for the Shuffle, but that might only be for the Shuffle.

No, they are perfectly happy because it's often times good enough. A CD is lossy compared to what is on the raw studio track and you don't see people clamoring for the studio tracks. The CD in this case is good enough. In both cases opinion trumps facts because it's only opinion that matters when someone is listening to their own music.

As a fun aside, NIN releases some of their stuff as the raw studio tracks.

When I have my iPhone plugged in, the "Music" tab shows three separate lists to let me filter synching: My Playlists, my Artists and Genres.

I don't remember these before.

Also there is a "Books" tab - I think that tab was "Audiobooks" before.... could someone check before they upgrade?

A trained listener with good headphones and in a direct A/B comparison, maybe. In any other cases, not likely.

That's an old myth, I have yet to see facts that support this statement.

A 128kbps file will always have more artifacts than a 320kbps file. A 320kbps file has compression artifacts as well, but they are greatly reduced. Converting a higher bitrate file to a lower bitrate file such as 320 or 256kbps to 128kbps will likely introduce little to no additional noticeable artifacts than ripping straight to 128kbps.

The common person will not tell the difference between a 128kbps AAC audio file and a CD in a blind test. There are always special cases.
