Anyone else getting a completely blank window for Genius Mixes? All of my Genius Playlists are still there, but there's nothing in the Genius Mix area. Is this a user error or something?

funny, that's what i had previous to this update

not even a reinstall, preference delete, complete library re-generation could fix it :(

now they're back, though

Virtually zero difference for me...so I'd assume most people couldn't care less about the fact that music files are lossy (and yes, I rip everything in Apple Lossless).
I agree. My library is 100% mp3 files, 75% of which are 192 kbps and above. They sound perfectly fine on my sound system. If I went lossless, I'd have to keep over half of my library on an external drive. It's not worth it.

Any one else notice now that the iPhone's screen is turned in the Summery page of the device?

Update was worth it just for the genius mix being black fitting in with the other windows and saving my eyes.:)

Before I had, I think, 12 mixes but several that were called 'Alternative I' and 'Alternative II'. Now all 12 have different names. One is called 'Adult Alternative Mix' :D (but I have yet to figure out what is 'adult' about it).
Digging around found that these labels don't mean too much (Kings of Convenience are in Electro-Pop).

I am not switching to iBooks if Apple cannot provide the over the air synching capabilities that Amazon has (they should at least have this through mobileme). Amazon keeps all your books archived, plus it syncs across my Mac, iPhone, and iPad (hopefully Apple lets the app through).

You should be able to read the book in iTunes. How could this not be a feature?

The lossless > lossy arguments are really for another thread. The bigger picture here is that apple is locking us into 128 kbps and not giving us the choice as to what bit rate we'd like to down sample.

I'm all for this feature, don't get me wrong. I use it now with my shuffle and it's great. Just wish I could choose what bit rate I wanted without creating a whole new library of different bit rated songs. I did that and it sucked...

That I agree with. I'd like to be able to choose. I hope it'll be a feature soon.

Two questions,

#1:
Is there an option to not allow itunes to convert my mp3s? I wouldn't want to "ruin" my V0 mp3s.

Edit, this one's already answered for me.

#2:
Is iphone software 3.13. included? i don't want to "ruin" my jailbreak.

I think you guys are misunderstanding this convert option. It only makes the lower bitrate copy on your iPhone/iPod. I still have all my lossless recordings in my iTunes library following completion of the conversion.

I am really starting to suspect that June will give us iPhone 4.0 OS, iPad 4.0 OS, and iTunes 10.

I think this iTunes and the current iPad OS are just placeholders because they didn't want to give away all the new iPhone secrets yet. I'm pretty sure that June is when the iPad will get much more interesting.

So, honest question: outside of movies, why would anyone need over 16GB?

Honest answer: some people have more than 16GB of music. WAY more than 16 GB. Myself included.

But honest realization: Some people won't be using the iPad as their dedicated portable music player. That's what my iPhone is for. Hence, why I'm actually going for the 16GB model.

if an artifact exists, you hear it and it doesn't sound nice.

Well, that's certainly not a fact. Some people will hear some recoding artifacts. Some will not. In general, I'd bet some recoding artifacts are inaudible to anyone in a blind listening test. The blanket statement that ALL artifacts are audible is demonstrably false.

So you don't really think I'll take a huge hit in quality by playing 128kbps in my standard car radio, as compared to my 320kbps?

Try it and take a listen.

A CD is lossy compared to what is on the raw studio track...

Technically, no. A CD may be lower resolution than the master, but "lossy" refers to compression so since an audio CD is uncompressed audio data, it will never be "lossy".

I have over 2 or 3 hundred (can't recall right now), about 1/3 is music dvd's, but the rest is music. I don't rip to Lossless either (although I may start now), most are in 256 AAC. The 128kps conversion when synching is a welcome addition.

I'm using iTunes 9.1 on a Macbook Pro with new upgrade of Snow Leopard.

I don't have the books on the left like others have. Is it missing until you try to import some books or something?

EDIT: I added an ebook, and yes it's there. Sorry about that. Was hoping to see iPad apps in the store too :(

Wow, they had months of lead time and this is the best they could come up for the Books section? They just duplicated the Music section and called it Books, such laziness. Right click menu is even the same, wow, I'm going to "play" my books. The organization is not there, it's just a barebone crap.

So it's looking like you will be unable to buy/read iBooks on the Mac. I guess Apple wants you just to get an iPad for that.

Kind of strange, though, considering there is a Kindle app for the Mac...

One thing I can note is that my scripts are finally working again. I use "Quick Convert" to get TAL podcasts out of the podcast library and into my main library (I don't like a cluttered podcast library), and "Quick Convert" finally works again. Looks like I'll have to try to put back in some others as well to see if they all work now.

Cool site, but not very scientific. Here's what I got:

That kind of ruins the "test" for those who have not tried it (seeing it has the same result every time and you just posted the answer).

In any case, the 9.1 update does NOT show up in the Software Update for my PowerMac (PPC) machine and Leopard 10.5.7. I ran it twice. It does show up for the two machines I have Snow Leopard on in Software Update. When I checked for an update in iTunes, it then launched Software Update and not only did an update for iTunes show up, but Quicktime and iPhoto as well. I guess either Software Update or Leopard is a bit flaky (well given the number of freezes and panics I get with Leopard on my PPC machine, I would say the latter; Tiger is vastly more stable for PPC, IMO).
