I actually thought long and hard about this issue (longer and deeper than you care to know - I study energy and how it create and shape our complex society). Of course you can save your work onto your hard drive if you want to.

I don't see this as issue at least not in the near future. When was the last time your internet went out? If it happened to you, it didn't last long.

Set up your own WebDAV presence in your own domain and sync up your git, svn, etc., revision repository to keep your local copy the most current and you don't need to worry about Google.

Domains are cheap. Administering your own Mail service, web services and development services only requires your interest and time.

I like to own my research.

Am I correct in thinking iWork.com is only for archiving and sharing your documents while with Google Docs you can create and work on your documents online (with the ability to copy to your computer and work offline if you so desire)? If so, they're like chalk and cheese. iWork would serve no purpose for me while Google Docs would serve all.

Have to read my post? In case you haven't, here is an excerpt (with syntax edit): Office and iWork have no place in the future unless they migrate to the cloud.

iWork.com already exists...

Also, googledocs is not even close to being on par with office. It might be fine for what you need (writing simple documents) but as a layout suite it pales in comparison.

I hear you. My work need not be secretive. I think in the end you have to weigh the odds and privacy issue. At this point the probability of a total destruction and hacking of Google is quite low.

iWork update don't work

Trouble is that the new version of Pages doesn't actually work with iWork

Correct me if I'm wrong; you still need to own/buy iWork in order to use iWork.com.?

As I said earlier, Google Docs is not yet on par with Office, but for 90% of us, it is more than sufficient.

Everything you said of Google Docs is correct. I don't know about iWork and iWork.com. Would someone help MrSmith out, please?

The day of buying a word processor or a spreadsheet app is over! It only took 25 plus years.:(

WTF? I just bought iWork '09 along with my iMac less than a week ago? What can I do?

Seems kind of dumb not to have a retail release. May lose out on a fair amount of sales. Good for people that only want 1 or 2 of the three programs though. Bad for people that want to actually own the media in hands.

Easy one. Just don't envy others who have a newer version. If iWord '09 does what you need to do, why do you care about people that might have newer stuff? Just use your own.

Other than that, if the package isn't opened already, you might be able to bring it back to the store once '11 is in the stores. Not sure, depends on the store...

Of course... if you do save your work onto your hard drive you can't rely on cloud software to edit it can you? So you need editing software on your computer.

You're joking, right? Have you heard of aeroplanes, trains, boats, buses, many hotels, power outages, ISP problems? The list goes on...

For any serious work, cloud productivity software is fundamentally flawed. No internet = no work. Go to the pub.

So what is the cloud good for? One word: Dropbox.

There's not a thing on Windows Office that offers better than Pages in terms of creation. I do all my business brochures and flyers on Pages and I've been asked several times what company is creating them. I tell them, "I'll give you a hint", Windows 7 has nothing to do with it, that's why they look professional. ;)

I think it's the Apple logo that makes it such an amazing product.

No contest, really. :D

+1, Amen.

@Sladey

Dependent upon being connect all the time, IMHO is truly a hellish existence. I cherish a good book/magazine on the plane or on subway much more than being connected. True there are times when you need to be connect, but at those times you learn to tune in your fear and anxiety - things will be okay. No worries;)

 Dude... YOU were the one who said you work in the cloud, so YOU rely on being connected... YOU were talking about productivity apps in the cloud, and suggested everyone was almost always connected. I simply pointed out situations where connection is unavailable.

Better still... Now you say that being dependent upon being connected is a truly hellish experience. Thank you. You have just defeated your own argument that cloud software is the only way to go. Truly magnificent!

I love it as well. Pages is my most used app, followed closely by Keynote. I have also been using Numbers quite a bit. I love it far more than Office.

I use pages a lot to write all my university papers. The only thing I would add, is support for equations, or some kind of equations editor other than MathType. Until now I've been using Latexit, which is great, but some kind of integrated solution would be even better.

**yawn**

they still make iWork.???

What a complete and utter waste of time...

Yes because I don't need a word processing application that uses almost 2GB of RAM to perform its most basic functions (Word)

Does it use really use 2gb of ram??? I did not know that. Let me open it up and check.

Omg I'm shocked, I opened it up and it's using 10.66Mb. Maybe if I add texts to it. 20 pages and 12,012 words and it only when up to 16.6Mb. I'm so confused.

On a serious note, it's funny how people believe their lies and exaggerations. I mean, come on.

I was excited for this update. Improvements? Nothing but bloody limitations!
