maya - go on and update. a few restarts are always good to scare off the Mac-gremlins. :D and i'll bet any issues have resolved themselves by then.

i also noticed today using Illustrator CS2, all the 'Aqua blue' bits seem alot brighter. maybe some Aqua resources have been updated? anyone else notice this.

and no, i'm not even using ShapeShifter.

No problems

Downgraded to QT 7.0.1
Ran Cocktail
Disconnected all peripherals
Installed delta update (27.6M)
Reboot
Repaired permissions
Reboot with CMD+S
fsck -f
reboot

All's well with my PB 1.67 2gig- No ram missing, no audio out problems, no keyboard weirdness (built-in or usb)

Nothing seems faster, nothing seems slower

problems creeping in

I take back my earlier post of "no problems". I too updated, repaired permissions, booted in Single user ran fsck but I am occassionally getting periods where I can't force quit apps that are beach ballin' so I wind up restarting by ctrl + command + power. After that I reboot in single user again and run fsck.
I hope it doesn't persist.

pointer issues

With this update, the mouse pointer now has lost it's mind. It no longer changes shape based on what it is hovering over (ie, it is normally an arrow, but if you hover over a webbutton or weblink, it changes to a hand, and if you hover over text, it changes to the ibeam) This no longer works on 10.4.4. Really annoying. Also in safari, if you hover over a link, it no longer shows where the link goes in the status bar. Also, you cannot click on a menu title and let go, the menu items do not get hilighted. You must keep the button pressed for the hilighting to work.

Also, when you click an app from the dock, it opens in the background, not the foreground. so once the icon stops bouncing, I have to click the app again before the app shows in front of other apps running.

Does Apple not do any HF testing of a new update before it ships?

All of the above things work fine for me..

not everyone experiences these 'bugs' so that means it's only to do with that person's OS X install or hardware/software combination. Apple can't 'fix' OS X so that it solves indivual problems from a single persons installation of OS X.

most likely if you repair permissions, ect, fsck, reboot, reboot then the problems go away. sometimes it's just a weird install of OS X and nothing will fix it, it needs to be re-installed.

so yeah, you've gotta find out what's causing the buggyness.

I did repair permissions - and for those who ask why, because it is about the only maintenance you need to do in OSX and it is a HIGHLY recommended idea, a great troubleshooting procedure which fixes many problems I encounter in a lab of 25+ macs.

Amazing how so called administrators recommend a placebo to everyone, I listen to this all the time at work. Not to say that its not worth ensuring that your permissions are in check but repairing permissions is very rarely a solution if your system has genuine problems.

Some examples of genuine solutions:

Corrupt Parameter Ram:
Reset NVRAM (cmd-opt-P-R)

Application Launch Issues:
Clean up your Launch Services Database
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

Spotlight Search Issues:
Recreate the .Spotlight-V100 database
mdutil -E /

After the 10.4.3 upgrade the fans in my 1.6GHz G5 went CRAZY. After that upgrade the box OVERHEATS and crashes! To make it work I have an external fan the sits in front of the machine.

I thought 10.4.4 would have corrected the issue as 10.3.9 did after the 10.3.8 update caused the same fan problems, but I of course was wrong!

I must admit, I have never been this UNHAPPY as a MAC user as I am now! I really mean that. It just seems that there is one thing after the other!

I've got a 1.6 G5 and completed the update. Everything works great. I've often questioned others when they said a particular update made their machine seem "snappier" but I can really see the difference. It is snappier. I'm a happy camper. As to the fan issues with a 1.6 G5....I haven't had any. I have had some crashes but attribute that to my 9 yr old who goes to an online game site and seems to never log off.:( . BTW, I don't have a bunch of "tweaks". Transparent Dock is about it. Smooth as silk so far and keeping my fingers crossed

Too much good stuff happening. The updates work fine, I have just one question though, how do you get rid of the iTunes windows when you are looking at regular iTunes stuff.

I don't need the music store there all the time.
Pardon me if this has been answered but I haven't gotten all the way through the thread. After downloading the iTunes update I was a bit upset at seeing the iTunes store stuff at the bottom but started to investigate the buttons. Bottom right corner has a button that turns "on/off" the store stuff. I'm happy again. Cheers

10.4.3 update made my gf's Dual 1.8 PMG5 fan system get a serious case of bipolar disorder. Even when setting Processor to Reduced and Automatic, the intermittent noise didn't subside. Same issue is present after a 10.4.4 update. Back to 10.4.2, yet AGAIN!!

This sort of support oversight on Apple's part for their professional level machines does NOT bode well for us soon-to-be 'legacy' PPC users.

Crappy update

Everything is much slower, lots of beachballs in even the simplest tasks.. I feel set back to jaguar. Kind of like all the g4 optimation has gone out in order to make that universal binary run better on intel or whatever.

How do I clean up my Launch services database? Do i type copy that line into terminal exactly like you have above? I get some apps that just bounce forever and also sometimes cant force quit when i get the beachball. Please let me know.

Straight into the Terminal enter:
Code:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

A reboot is probably a good idea afterwards also.

I had the same problem and Apple Care showed me a work-around. The problem comes from the latest iTunes update in 10.3.x. Here's what you do to restore permissions:
Go to your HD>Library>Receipts. You must find two files in receipts and drag them to your desktop. Find: itunes.pkg and itunes4.pkg, drag them to your desktop then use repair permissions in your disc utility. When finished put the two files back into receipts.
If, and when, a new itunes update comes out we may not need to do this everytime we repair permissions.

Help!!

I've tried every different update size of 10.4.4 from Apple and every time the install gets up to ~25%, it stops and tells me there's been an error, please try again. I've been re-trying since it came. I don't know what to do make it work. Thanks.
