Flip4Mac has confirmed that there is a bug with their WMV player version 2.0 with QuickTime 7.0.4. Until Flip4Mac posts an update, you have to revert to version 1 (1.0.3 was the latest, I think) of their player or use QT 7.0.3.

I just read this:eek:
"Reports also surfaced Wednesday that Flip4Mac's application was unstable with the latest version of QuickTime, version 7.0.4. Crashes of QuickTime and Safari were reported on numerous Web sites. The company told users that it is working on a fix for the issue and hopes to have it released by Thursday.

Microsoft had not responded to a request for comment by press time."

I find it rather funny.

A company finally offers a product for free as a gesture of generosity, only to have their product cause wide-scale crashing on Macs worldwide. A public relations nightmare, if I've ever seen one.

Here's to the Crazy Ones

well looks like a few restarts and a fsck -f seems to have fixed all Dock and menu borky-ness...

note to self - 3 x reboot + repair permissions + fsck it up = silver bullet to happy user experience.

:p

Bluetooth missing in System Preferences

Is it just me or after just having installed 10.4.4., the Bluetooth icon in the System Preferences is missing? Did the update take it out? Can anybody confirm this?

funny, this page doesn't say anything specific about the CoreImage updates or new ATI drivers. i guess they figure that the user wouldn't be concerned with the specifics...

and no, the Bluetooth section in system preferences is still there. maybe try a reboot..? or 3. :p :D

Well ive just spent the past 3 hours trying to figure out exactly what went wrong with my iBook, but it was Kernel Panicing like crazy. I couldnt even get online long enough to make a post about it. I have a presentation to run off my iBook in the morning so lets just say I was extremely pissed off.

Lets recap.

I updated to 10.4.4
Several hours later the Mac crashes for the first time since I switched 3 months ago.
It crashes again.
Kernel panic!
More kernel panics!
So as soon as I logged in, I created a dummy account then rebooted with it. The dummy account would crash too so I knew that it was a system problem. This leads me to believe it was 10.4.4
I did an archive and install.
No kernel panics this far. Exported my presentation to Powerpoint and emailed it myself just in case.

Any thoughts? I have not installed any hardware. Its as it was prebuilt. It cant be a hardware problem.

I installed shapeshifter several weeks ago and uninstalled it about 4 days ago.

Everything in my opinion leads to 10.4.4. I want to update because im now back to 10.4.2 but I really dont want to go through this hassle again.

On another note, my iBook is FAST again. I thought Macs didnt slow down like Windows after time?

ShapeShifter shouldn't have caused any trouble. maybe it was the update... i don't know what you can do other than try again, and after the update repair permissions and maybe run a fsck.

your iBook probably 'slowed down' because of software that you'd installed. each piece of software adds it's own preference file, sometimes even more than 1. if you're installing lots of different software, that can add up. probably lots of other useless things in your library that you didn't need either, which are gone now that you re-installed.

I did repair permissions after updating. Not sure what an fsck is.

And I still have all my software here. I even added garageband and x11 on the archive and reinstall. But its running super fast. Must be something clogging up the system. Put it this way I wont be running any haxies whatsoever anymore.

Damn, another kernel panic. Somebody help me, please :(

I dont have an external harddrive. I cant afford to lose my music collection.

i'm not sure if kernel panics can cause data loss... but i'm sure it's not good.

what were you doing when it had the panic?

i'd start to burn my music collection and other data if i was you...

to run a fsck (filesystem check) you'll need to boot into Single User Mode. restart your computer and hold down cmd+s. you'll see a screen of text instead of the normal OS X startup. just type fsck and hit enter. if you're running a journaled file system, it'll tell you what to do.

then just type reboot and hit enter when it's done.

also you could try the hardware diagnosis CD/DVD that came with OS X.

I was logging into the www.o2.co.uk website when it first happened. All I remember is the site taking an age to load, then boom.

Im worried I will have to do a clean install. As I said, I dont have an external drive though I could buy one on payday soon. My problem is that I dont know whether I will have enough time to copy my 30gigs or so of music to the external drive before I see a kernel panic again.

No Problems So Far

Just Upgraded. Downloaded the 55mb update from Apple. Ran Cocktail Pilot with a restart. Updated my 2Ghz 20" iMac from the downloaded file. Restarted and ran Cocktail Pilot with a restart.

No Problems noticed. No real diferences noted either. Dashboard still seems a little sluggish to start up.

iPhoto does not see RAW files from a D200, but does the JPEGs just fine.

Looking forward to the new iLife

Will upgrade my Powerbook next.

I hope it fixes that chirping problem, although I haven't heard that in a while (maybe I'm used to it).

Mine does that too. drives me NUTS.

this is my 3rd attempt at installing this, every time i get slapped with a try again message :(

This may be a dumb question, but why do people do OS updates when they know they're about to have to depend on their machines for presentations, etc.?
Seriously. You should always wait until after the immediate need has passed, or at least until you have a few hours you can lose to recovering from the update.

Maybe I just expect this because I'm from the world of PCs? :)

Sigh... because it might just make the presentation even better!! Isn't it obvious? ;)

Updated to 10.4.4 with abt a 27MB download. Repaired permissions b4 and after and all running sweet and smooth (although did take quite a while to reboot after DL) ;)

Have an isight iMac G5, the update runs beautifully and have had none of the problems listed so far, certainly no fan problems, the machine is incredibly quiet. Next need to update the iBook. Cross fingers.

Did anyone notice a subtle change with the slideshow feature in Finder? (Or did someone already mention this?) There's now an "Add to iPhoto" option

Since you only got the machine a few months ago, you should be covered by apple care. Give them a call.

One other thing though, I think that even if you do an archive and install, the apps themselves don't change - are not adjusted. A lot of people have been having problems with Quicktime causing system instabilities - flip4mac, for example, conflicts with X.4.4. There is a way to switch back to an earlier version of QT: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime701reinstallerforquicktime704.html

Try this and see how you get on. If your system is saying all the hardware is fine, I'd guess it's an app. problem.

someone previously asked what was new in this version of iTunes. i said it was only the iTMS mini store. i think i lied. sorry.

i just realised that in iTunes 6.0.2 there's also "Multiple Speakers" available to select. not just your computer speakers, and not just your speakers that are hooked upto AirTunes, but you can play music through both at the same time! :D pretty neat!

I am glad to read all the reviews of your brave souls in regards to this update. I am not brave enough to join you all with the restarts every so often. ;) :D

10.4.3 will have to do it for now, until 10.4.4b is released. :D
