Ok, I guess I can safely assume that I am not the only one who has noticed that the update made the speakers much much louder. So....how do we fix it? :p
Does anyone have the update and NOT experience louder speakers?

I'm experiencing the same thing (I have an imac)! Everything is LOUD! I can only have the volume at one notch. The only application I can really control the volume is in itunes.

I've also noticed that when i'm using Finder, it freezes at a certain point when i'm scrolling for files. So frustrating! Its happened consistently now and dont know what to do!

Microsoft Word X for Mac Crashing?

Microsoft Word X for Mac Crashing in my
G5 (version 10.4.9), as well as in my old G4 (mac os x version 10.2.8)

ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO, I bought MY FIRST mac (G4 mac os x version 10.2.8). At the same time, I bought a special deal they were offering at the time -- the Microsoft Office v. X for Mac, mainly so I could use the Word program. I started to have problems with the Word program crashing on the G4. I then bought a G5 (version 10.4.9), and transferred most of the data from the G4 to the G5 by firewire. I was so concerned about not losing anything, I didn’t even think about how I was also transferring my problem.

Word was crashing so often, it would re-open and then crash before I could re-save the “recovered files.” I finally had some serious crashes involving the kernel. So I followed Apple Care phone-in instructions and did a clean install. I was told to leave off the Norton’s most recent program, that it was picking up cookies as if they were viruses.

So I took all the data off the G5, moved it to an exterior hard drive, wiped it clean, then re-installed all the data. I used the original CD that came with the Office: Microsoft Office v. X: mac. I also took all the files off the G4 and transferred them to the G5.

I did not take off all of the Test Drives that were on both the G4 and G5, and I ended up with about 7 copies of Word on the G5. So I finally kept about two of the programs, both being version 10.1.1. One is located with the G4 data, and the other is on my G5 desktop, and I use it regularly.

I don’t use the other features of the Office program – so I can’t tell if the Excel, Entourage, Power Point, or Messenger would have the same problem. I DO know that my Word program continues to crash as much as it used to. I have sent in my error logs so many times, I just gave up.

I thought I had read somewhere that all I had to do to avoid this was to uninstall the program, and re-install it, but that is what I did essentially when I wiped the drive clean and then re-installed it, and it is still crashing. When I use AOL with Word, it always crashes both programs. But that always used to happen in PC-land as well. I wrote for AOL, and the word was just that "AOL and Word don't like each other." None of my bosses knew of any cure.

I have called Mac and Microsoft so many times, but they don’t seem to have any help. The last time, the Microsoft woman told me to empty my trash and I did that, but it really didn’t help. She said that the log report included some code that meant there was difficulty in the trash. However, nothing changed after I dumped the trash.

Does anyone else have this problem? Since I work constantly in Word, I generally end up having to save recovered files at least 20 times per day. I have it set for “allow fast saves” and to save it at “1 minute”), but it is really getting me down. At least 3-4 times a day, it crashes again when I am busy saving the recovered files – and I get very confused as to which file is which.

I thought someone told me that I had to take off the Test Drives, but then I read that you don’t have to, that it doesn’t make any difference. Was there some kind of upgrade that I missed?

HELP! I have never posted to a Mac forum (or any kind of forum before), so I apologize if I have done anything “verboten.” I am sitting here facing the prospect of working all night, and I just finally said, “Oh well, what do I have to lose?”

So thank you very much in advance. All sincere ideas are MUCH appreciated.

My complaint about 10.4.9 Upgrade

Tuesday, March 27, 2007

Hello!

My problem with the 10.4.9 Server upgrade is unique in that I am accustom to writing to my G5 server from a G4 running Mac OS 9.2.2. As soon as I did the 10.4.9 Server upgrade, the server began disconnecting if a transfer from the G4 larger than about 500K was attempted.

Prior to the 10.4.9 upgrade, I routinely wrote to docs on the G5 server, and could drag-copy gigs of data to the G5 from the G4 without a single problem.

Right now, I m going back to Server 10.4.8 - which worked just fine for me.

I'm experiencing the same thing (I have an imac)! Everything is LOUD! I can only have the volume at one notch. The only application I can really control the volume is in itunes.

Last night I was watching a music video and I had to tune down the volume to one bar and adjust the QuickTime volume slider to 'bout 20% before it was okay.

Of course it's cool if the usable volume range becomes louder since internal speakers do have the problem of being usually too quiet but when it turns around like this that I have to constantly adjust and fight the system to keep it quiet enough, it's just wrong.

I have a mac mini G4 and ever since I updated it, not only does it take a REALLY long time to start up (each and every time, not just the after update restart) but it routinely crashes, freezes and I have to shut it down more than my Windows machine. Is there any way I can go back to 10.3.8? I haven't been a mac user very long, only about a year so I'm not sure if this is possible or not but I am suffering. HELP PLEASE!

I'd try the following steps before messing around with the system.

Open the Terminal. It may be found in the utilities folder. "Macintosh HD>Applications>Utilities"

If you're Admin user then type in the following: Sudo periodic daily weekly monthly if you're not, then have someone who is type in the command.

Open the Disk Utility. Select your hard drive and select repair permissions.

Reboot your computer and reset the PRAM. On the Mac Mini you need to reset the PMU and instructions are on Apple's website: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300574

Let use know if you have or have not solved the problem

I downloaded the combo update and it fixed things mostly but now iDVD is broken. It wont open and when I try to re-install it from the DVD that came with the mac, it keeps telling me there were errors with the installation. I don't know what to do now. :(

Maybe try to repair permissions.

If that doesn't fix it, try to re-install the 10.4.9 Combo Update.

Thanks dartzorichalcos, I did that but nothing changed. The icon in the doc and in Applications has changed to the icon FOR Applications (the piece of paper w/ the pencil, paintbrush and ruler in the shape of an A). I have no idea what happened but thanks smartalic34 the download worked much better and pgwalsh everything is a lot snappier after your suggestions. Now I'm just not sure why my iDVD has decided to die and why my install disk keeps telling me there were errors during installation and won't re-install it. All other iLife applications are fine. Odd...

UPDATE: I got everything working again. Thank you all for all your help!
